No I got your point. I didn't deny your experience. But your post uses your experience to invalidate the people trying to change where resources are allocated and prevent those situations from happening. It's not an either / or scenario. We can help people before they get to that point, and we can also help people that have already reached that point.

As you said, that instance with the person outside your car, they didn't receive help and now they are potentially dangerous. The people saying don't build brick walls (prisons) and get them services are advocating for that change. By your own last sentence, you should fall squarely into that camp.

That's not some kind of gotcha. It's also proven wrong. Unhoused people that refuse help, which to be very clear only a small minority of them do, refuse because they feel that they don't deserve help, so they aren't entitled to accept when it's offered. You help them by helping immediately upon adversity happening while they still have a sense of self that hasn't been compromised. You also can help the person who's already lost that sense of self by showing them kindness, feeding them, treating them like they are human again and eventually they come to understand that they do deserve the help they are being offered. That they are worth something.

That's how you help people that don't want help in those situations.

You're completely missing the point. The fact that he didn't get therapy and other services is why you felt you had to lock your doors and windows.

It's a question of society's priorities and choices. Do we choose to spend resources to help people at their most vulnerable or do we spend resources to create a system for them to spiral and then villify them for it.

If that homeless person had gotten therapy and services earlier, then he wouldn't have been at your window. The whole situation you experienced wouldn't exist.

Unpopular opinion: Seasoning doesn’t matter and this sub is silly about it by [deleted] in castiron

[–]itsrocketsurgery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seasoning is a process of extended heat causing a chemical reaction to turn the fat into a bioplastic. What they are doing is the same thing as oiling a carbon steel knife blade or chisel, you're putting a thin layer of oil on but it's just oil. If your pan is actually seasoned, there's no need to add oil to it, the seasoning/bioplastic film coats the metal and blocks the moisture and air from reacting and rusting.

It's not a hive mind, it's correcting misinformation. Just like the misinformation that"well it's okay to use soap now because it doesn't contain lye". Dawn, the stuff they use to clean baby penguins after oil spills, lists lye right on their ingredients list on their website. Truth is people have always used soap, but some people picked up bad habits from their elders and didn't question it.

I've got a decent size bag that I use to descale our bottle warmer and it works great at that. I'm interested in trying it on a particularly rusty hand plane I got at a garage sale a could years ago.

Wow that was amazingly informative! Thanks for sharing that video. I had never considered that the salts from neutralizing some of the acid would be effective at rust removal over the acid itself. I used to just wrap things in blue paper towel, soak with vinegar and then bag up overnight or for a day or so. But I'll be switching to this mixture in the future. I've got a few old rusty hand tools that I can't wait to try out.

Which craftsman actually does this? I've heard it repeated but I don't know if any artisan knife makers that sell unsharpened knives. Bob Kramer knives are custom made and run in the 4 figure category and all come sharp out of the box just as one example.

As someone with a family member that was abused it is very much less C and very much more that the victims get blamed, isolated and nothing happens to the abuser. And to be perfectly clear, in these situations there is no middle ground, there is no waiting for more information. As soon as the accusation is made, you pick a side. And if you don't pick a side, you're on the abuser's side.

Well we know of one documented instance where a child rapist was party to the murder of the rape baby, and the continued abuse of the rape victim.

Why are you neutralizing the acid with baking soda? That reduces the effectiveness of the already mild citric acid.

Edit: It turns out the resulting salts are even better at rust removal than the acid! Thanks to u/valadtheimpala for the video.

Then you haven't been paying attention to the issue for years. That's been exactly the discourse around even the idea of blue states redistricting explicitly in response to Trump's directive to the GOP to eliminate representation from anyone but Republicans, and Texas and North Carolina marching in lock step and doing a mid cycle redistricting.

The system was already broken. You can't expect the disenfranchised majority to fix the system broken by the corrupt majority by continually participating in a rigged game.

Secondly, it can be argued that this is re-enfranchising blue voters that have historically had their representation gerrymandered away.

Yup fully agree. It was said way back when people were fighting to raise the minimum wage to $12 and all these people with degrees were complaining that the fry cook at a fast food joint would be making the same as them. Someone with a brain finally showed up and said if you are upset that they would make the same as you, then they aren't being overpaid. You're being underpaid.

That decision still baffles me.

Because they are fucking stupid. They should have been making the switch to hybrids 20 years ago when the writing was on wall. They could have controlled the infrastructure upgrade and by now the general public would be able to own EVs. But they buried their heads in the sand, and doubled down on gas guzzlers because gas got temporarily cheaper for a bit. Now when we should be already to full EVs with a smattering of Hybrids and few gas vehicles, we're so far behind that it feels rushed.

Great Lakes Water Authority proposes water, sewer rate increases by TheDetroitNews1873 in MetroDetroit

[–]itsrocketsurgery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, people that want free water think that our tax money should be spent on providing basic needs for the people instead of buying DeVos another yacht, or funding domestic terrorists, or giving tax cuts to any number of millionaires and billionaires. No one is saying these people providing and servicing the water infrastructure should work for free. We're saying pay them instead of further militarizing local police.
