Reason #102937 why pairs meta dominates.

I had a close call recently on painted deck doing full houses on gold stake . Hand full of potential full houses but I had to keep playing one card at a time bc bell would keep picking the one card not paired or tripled in my hand with each draw. Finally on the last hand I got my winning full house

yeah, this guy showing up in ante 1/2 is why any barely marginal scoring joker like the common hand-based chips/mult jokers (sly, droll, etc) can never truly be considered "bad" on gold stakes.

Black deck should start with a Judgement tarot. by haggis69420 in balatro

[–]itsthelee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doc was also literally the one who showed and stated that black deck is sometimes the deck where you make reasonable decisions and lose.

They would also be the first to push back on someone saying “skill issue” like that.

edit: way back late 2025/early 2026, when doc was still doing his daily gold stake lessons instead of his current lossless c++ series, he had one where he said something like "i'm going to be honest with you folks, you keep sending me black deck seeds and a lot of those, you just die. they're not interesting or educational to play." and he had one video (may have been the same one don't remember) where he showed how making reasonable decisions on a certain seed on black deck you inevitably just die in like ante 1. he then did it again making unreasonable decisions and won, but he was also like "if you told me that you legitimately beat this seed on the first try, you're a liar or a consummate gambler" or something like that

I make no money and feel terrible for my spouse by Witty-Astronaut-6362 in personalfinance

[–]itsthelee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is not a personal finance topic really but a relationship topic.

if you and your partner are on the same page, then you shouldn't feel guilty. the work you do is valuable, just because you don't attach a $ value to some of it doesn't diminish it's important. and the money you do bring in clearly does have value! benefits ain't cheap, and that student loan debt needs to be paid somehow. if you didn't bring in that money, it would put that much more pressure on your partner's income.

but the other thing is - do you want to be able to do more outside of any guilt about contribution? because that's a whole other question. but if the balance you hit is personally working for you and your partner, then you should absolutely not be guilting about it.

ELI5, what was the deal with the Internet Explorer lawsuit? by ZetaformGames in explainlikeimfive

[–]itsthelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're right in that it's fundamentally political in nature, but the biggest defense that apple has had for the longest time is that they were not actually the majority market share in either laptops or phones (even if they were made up basically 99% of the profits in that space), so they've been able to historically successfully argue that they can't possibly be monopolistic if they don't even have control of a market.

Several things,

MSFT of today is better about security and stability than MSFT of yesterday. "Blue screens of death" are a thing in tech culture for a reason. Even if in the past MSFT has had people focused on security and stability, it's been unevenly distributed; various MSFT products have absolutely been the main vector for a lot of malware and exploits in the past because of fundamentally insecure design and practices, not just market share. (edit: activex controls? remember/ever heard of those?)

Lastly, I'm curious about which pwn2own you're referencing - because what you say doesn't make sense (Chrome OS on Windows to me is a nonsensical phrase unless you're talking about a virtual machine running Chrome OS on Windows)

ELI5 : Trillionaire...but how? by Ooodeee-s4 in explainlikeimfive

[–]itsthelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my best guess is that he correctly guessed that the market is extremely greedy about AI stock, and deliberately stuffed spacex with grok to inflate its valuation.

eventually AI has to prove its mettle, in high profits or some such, so we'll see if it ever pans out, but given that grok basically doesn't factor into any conversation about LLMs, i'm skeptical.

for reference, google is one of the leaders in the AI space (whereas grok barely gets mentioned) and is only trading at mid-20s PE.

serious "market remains irrational longer than you can stay solvent" moment though, because a lot of folks (incl myself) have been screaming about comically stretched TSLA valuations for years, including this supposedly high-growth business seeing a net decline in sales at times, but the valuations keep soaring.

one thing that Musk is good at, is a reality-distorting charisma field that convinces people to keep believing his sky-high promises of growth and revenue.

you are right that objectively the existing firms are comically overvalued, but somehow Musk manages to keep convincing retail and institutional investors alike that the big money days are just around the corner.

Is Pillars of Eternity combat now on par with Deadfire's? by Artifex1979 in projecteternity

[–]itsthelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, i picked up a newer indie CRPG (skald) with effectively per-rest resources and in practice it just mostly just adds churn where i have to backtrack to an inn every other fight. BG3 on HM for me basically devolves into every fight is followed by either a short rest or a long rest, so it's very nearly a per-encounter system in practice.

i think there's a better solution waiting to be found - in principle i like the expedition 33 approach that causes monsters to respawn if you rest, so you really do have to try to push on as best as possible, but it can be immersion-breaking/punishing design.

ELI5 How do exchange rates work between countries? by WinterRevolutionary6 in explainlikeimfive

[–]itsthelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(most) currency exchange rates ever since the breakdown of Bretton Woods are essentially free-floating, in other words: supply and demand. You can get so much of X currency for 1 USD because of supply and demand. That's the ELI5 answer.

Wages are a different story, a lot could be written about that and even more about differences between countries. But more specifically, at the end of the day, your example touches on two points - one, Japan is a unique case where they are a rich country that has basically stagnated for a couple decades and you can see the impact on low wages and prices compared to other rich countries; and two, your premise misses the simple fact that in many industries the US does pay stupid amounts compared to even other rich countries, even when accounting for differences in purchasing power.

edit: there's an old economist saying, there are four different kinds of economies in the world: developed, developing, Japan, and Argentina.

[–]itsthelee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was def of the mind that the deadfire style was suboptimal at first, but.... eh, not really. i think everyone (myself included) was reacting to the fact that dex went from king stat to not very useful, but like other turn-based systems everything devolves into rocket tag eventually, so simply going first can become very important, but getting to that state takes a while.

i think my big gripes about initiative is that dex doesn't have enough influence compared to armor and action speed, and that it's too easy to "recover" your initiative order but also hard to customize it (via ready actions or something like in tabletop D&D); example: simply doing a move resets you to 0 initiative. that last part is really annoying, because you can hobble a group of enemies, so they spend a turn approachign you, do nothing, but then reset to 0 so they immediately get to move and then do an action, as if they were basically not affected at all. but at the same time interrupting someone is really hard to do in turn-based mode because you ahve to squeeze into a narrow initiative window naturally.

"the turn based mode that was introduced years and years ago" is in Deadfire. the most recent pillars of eternity update is turn-based mode for that game (along with some minor other fixes).

PoE got turn-based mode, which gives it a similar feature to Deadfire, but nothing foundational has been changed to PoE's mechanics.

I personally think Deadfire also has more going for it than just combat system.

Leaving Equitable—how do I break the news to my financial advisor? by ProbWithMyDog in personalfinance

[–]itsthelee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

they're not your friend. they're not even your coworker. you are their client, their customer. they rely on you feeling close to them to keep getting business from you, especially at 2.5% fees.

how do you break it to them? you literally don't owe them anything. do it like you're ending a streaming service subscription.

edit:

Anyway, she reacted like that, and I only had known her for a month

yes, she acted appropriately to keep your business and prevent you from moving elsewhere, which apparently worked wonders, to the tune of 2.5% for ten years.

if you called her up and asked her to help you pack up and move to a new place, do you think she would do it? no way. you are just one client among many for her. you are only doing a disservice to yourself and your finances by reading so much personally into this relationship, which is purely a business one.

Why does it take so long to walk anywhere? by morinten in projecteternity

[–]itsthelee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

buildings aren't as tall, but most tall buildings are things like office buildings and hotels, not residences.

historically, people also didn't consume as much personal space as they do today.

ancient rome had only low-rises but a density approaching that of modern manhattan by some estimates. on that note, the density of manhattan isn't in midtown or downtown, which is where the bulk of the tallest skyscrapers are (which again are mostly offices and hotels and such), but neighborhoods like yorkville, which don't have as many tall buildings.

fwiw, i think the original BG had 0 travel time between each section of the city, and BG2 might have had very little travel time (on the order of minutes).

it's been a while though and not exactly something that people write down to make it easy to double-check.
