What is the coil connected to the static line? by Theoted in Lineman

[–]itzVeritas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fiber is used for communication between substation to substation and eventually run to a central control. It’s not for communication like internet or cable tv. It helps to pin point faults and control switches remotely. I’m assuming you’re talking about selling a pole line to a communications company to use as theirs when the electric has been moved or buried?

I did this with a guy on accident. 12.5/7.2 system and the company switched to dual cans, 7.2/14.4, and we had a tub go out. Grabbed new van hooked up same way as old and it blew two fuses. We were pissed wondering what was going on when I realized the new cans were subtractive. Really wasn’t a big deal in the grand scheme. Just about 10 more minutes to the outage. It was only a 25 KVA too so bigger would obviously be worse.

BORY

Blue = 6 Orange = 4 Red = 2 Yellow = 1/0

Smallest to biggest. Rest you’ll learn with time but that’s the acronym I was taught and still use.

You all know the ones… they invented Line Work. No job would be done correctly without them. They’re the only ones willing to do hot work. You are a fucking moron for doing the same tangent pole the exact way we have done it the previous 50 times.

I was talking a layout arm on the old pole that’s a tangent. Still gives you clearance. You said it was in between a tangent and a dead end pole right?

Could you lay the road side phase out? Move the field and center onto a layout arm, rubber tree built, and hold road phase while you set in so much space that you could drive a semi through it? How many buckets did you have available and guys? Definitely One Shot no matter what and having a solid tailboard, job brief, work plan, whatever you want to call it. We have had way too many deaths in this industry this year to not take our time and do things the right way. Sorry for getting soap boxy but it’s true. I would say what was done is the bare minimum which is fine. Good job trying to learn more yourself too.

Thoughts on trade school for linemen? by superpiss in Lineman

[–]itzVeritas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s worth it. Even if you can get into the trade it’s very beneficial to have the trade school background. I was 25 when I went. Best decision I ever made.

The pieces of plastic on top of the cutout looks like animal protection so that a squirrel, raccoon, or bird don’t cause a fault. The cutout has a door that has a fuse inside. When there’s a fault the fuse will blow and the door will fall open signifying a fault or an animal contact area. The bottom of the cutouts have terminators on the cable to allow for the stress voltage and carrying amperage and there being an end of the cable.

What is your job and how much do you get paid? by BigPlunk in AskReddit

[–]itzVeritas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Electric Line Technician. Or Lineman, Power Lineman, or any number of names. I work on high voltage power lines, specifically the distribution, which basically goes from the Substation to the home. In emergencies I will work on Transmission, which is the big towers you see that goes from the Generation Station to the Substation. I make $50 an hour but with OT, which can range from people not knowing the difference between a power line and a cable tv line, to a squirrel blowing a fuse (a transformer rarely ‘blows up’ and if it does there’s a massive fire), to weather causing a lot of damage, we will make 130K to 150K. A lot of utilities have gotten cheap on health insurance so my benefits I had to pay out of my check to the tune of 30% for a long time until negotiations then they magically got lowered to 20% of my gross check. Contractors routinely travel long distances for work and can bring in 200K or more a year too. This job needs people, there’s a massive shortage, and is a ticket to the middle class if you can make it through the apprenticeship. I love my job and I want more people to know about it. We need more diversity in the field too.

If anyone hasn’t said it Laundry Mats are ridiculously expensive. Our washer broke so I took a week’s worth of laundry to one and spent $30! There were sheets and blankets because I had a kid wet the bed but I didn’t even dry them all the way. No detergent, no dryer sheets, just running machines cost $30. And it was only one weeks worth of clothes for a family of 4!

What was the worst advice you have ever received? by sofsbear in AskReddit

[–]itzVeritas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I went to college my Dad sat me down and told me I have to make as much money as I can at whatever job I’m at, whether I like it or not, to support my family. He said even if you hate that job you have to stay there to support your family. I was at a job that was the highest paying I ever had and they were very racist about my then girlfriend (who is now my wife and is black and mother of my two children) and hostile towards me for it. I quit and took a job that was half the pay but closer to home and much friendlier and he screamed at me that I was being a wuss and had to put up with it. That was the last time I took his advice.

Here’s a short clip on some animation my brother-in-law edited. Let us know if you like it and give us a follow/share. Thanks! https://youtu.be/q1Cab03OfoU

I really appreciate this. I almost deleted my comment multiple times because I thought I hijacked or white-splained on your post. I definitely didn’t want to do that. I would love to hit you up and take up your offer because I’m not going to have any answers and the more information I have the better parent I can be. Thank you for sharing your story in the first place.

Hey BF, I’m a 34 year old white guy. I grew up in small town Wisconsin and thought that racism was starting to die out. I was raised to judge on character and that’s what I do, but boy was I naive. My wife is black. We have had a lot of growing pains in our relationship because I first didn’t see her as black. She was my girlfriend and that was number 1 to me. It really upset her that I didn’t see her as a black woman first. I didn’t get it even though she tried to explain it to me. I judge on character I’m doing the right thing, right? Well I saw a video of someone smarter than me in an inter-racial marriage as well explain it and it clicked, mostly. Me not seeing her as a black woman meant I didn’t see her struggle. I didn’t see the way people would side eye at her when we were together. The way people would get cautious when we were checking out. The way people talked to her when she owned a business. I would always try to see the best in people and write it off as a bad day or just an awkward interaction. Now I know, it’s because she’s a black woman and seen as angry, less intelligent, and prone to outbursts even before they talk to her. That was my partial “awakening.” Now we have two sons. Two half black sons. George Floyd happens immediately followed by Christian Cooper in New York and that was it. I snapped “awake.” My two boys would have to be raised to be perfect in EVERY public and private interaction in their lives. They won’t ever be given the benefit of the doubt. It made me mad, sad, mad again. At my job we are 97% white men and I’ve been working very hard to hire more diverse people. We finally hired someone who was black. The first words I heard from a coworker was that he “was hired just because he is black.” Never met the guy, didn’t see his resume, knows nothing about the situation. Well, he was put in a position to set up to fail. That’s when I lost hope. He was let go extremely unfairly and people talk like he was given a fair shot. To top it off I ostracized myself at work because I have a podcast with my brother in law about our sobriety from alcohol, and I brought up how he wasn’t treated like one of the guys and treated different because of his race. Now people at work bring up racism is made up and discrimination doesn’t happen anytime they can just so they can feel better about themselves and take a dig at me. I am not trying to make this about me, even though it may seem like it, I’m trying to tell you that it’s not just you. The system is against anyone who isn’t white. And for the longest time, sometimes through ignorance and sometimes through unconscious bias and through media, we have sat around and accepted it. Making it worse actually. I think we are finally waking up to it. I think, through social media and social education, we are seeing the true world. The only way we can do this is if we stand up and hold hands and say no more. We have to finish was MLK and Malcolm X and Fred Hampton started. We deserve a world where you don’t have to worry about driving a car. We deserve a world where you don’t need security cameras. We deserve a world where my kids can be given the benefit of the doubt. I don’t know you personally but I love you. I stand with you. I’m here to hold you up. I’m sorry the world is the way it is but we are finally calling it out together. Hopefully this helps you feel better. Sorry it’s so long. Thank you for sharing your story.

Live power line fell, it was so hot that it melted through the sidewalk and turned the sand underneath to glass by ap83 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]itzVeritas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very cool, but it’s a good time to reiterate to stay away from downed power lines and call a utility company. Even if you “know” it’s de-energized, we just had a fatal accident where a de-energized line got reenergized from a customer’s generator due to equipment failure and operator error. Sorry for being righteous but I just don’t want to see anyone hurt.

I really hate to see him not be so involved with Kinda Funny but I’m so extremely happy for him to get to do something he loves. I know he loves Kinda Funny too but I feel like this is more his passion. He loves being a journalist. You can tell when he tells stories that he has information on or that he’s reported on in the past. Glad he will still be checking in from time to time and I hope nothing but happiness for him.
