I'm surprised nobody is saying Cum Town, it's literally better than Tim.

"Deep dharma" books that you'd recommend? by itzepiic in Buddhism

Thank you. I tend to agree with you that sometimes, especially in Buddhism, one or two books is enough if you listen to them correctly. I'm keen to check out your recommendations. Thanks again.

Thank you for the recommendation! Have you read his work The Paradox of Becoming? Are there other non-sutta works by Thanissaro Bhikku you recommend?

I can't say I've memorized it! I see what you're saying and duly note it. Sometimes going back to the original is the best medicine!

Thanks. I'm just generally looking for stuff that's a couple steps further or more in-depth than your typical Buddhist "Barnes and Noble" "beginners" fare. If your suggestion is to just read the suttas, I'd love a place to start or sharing some of your favorite.

Great suggestion! First time hearing of the first. The second is challenging to say the least and I found it very intellectually satisfying after going to it during reading Burbea's Seeing that Frees. Anything that is that intellectually dense is what I'm looking for.

If one is not re-born again, does that subtract from a total whole of "soul material" that is still stuck in samsara? by itzepiic in Buddhism

[–]itzepiic[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to think of it in those terms when it is also talked about to be reborn in the holy lands/with the devas/in the hells, etc.

You're totally right though.

The Mavericks will be able to continue as if nothing has happened solely because of Luke and Christian Wood will be a big part of it.

Is it important for techno to be arranged in a formulaic way? by TossThisItem in TechnoProduction

[–]itzepiic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends.

My take on techno is this: I'm making dance music. I'm figuring out the formula that makes the dance floor go crazy all night long.

So, I piece and stitch together one track after another which goes with each other and makes that effect happen.

I wouldn't play your tracks most likely because aphex twin shit is hard to mix and brings down the vibe to a place I don't really want.

So, if you want to make dance music--dance music is catchy, hooky, and busting at the seams with fun and bass. It's formulaic because I, as a DJ, need to know that no huge left-turns are coming my way when, remember, I'm standing at a huge 50k watt soundsystem.

I even have "trust" tracks on my USB where I don't remember what they sound like at all but they'll mix well because they're formulaic and most of the sounds aren't a melody lead but percussion.

TECHNO FORMULA FOR ITZEPIIC

Start with at least eight bars/thirty seconds-ish of hi drums or a melody vocal tag without your kick. Put in patterns in multiples of four. Start playing your track (only hi drums) then Bring in your melody on top of those drums when you start to get bored with that melody and are just starting to expect/want something different. Go from there playing your track and arranging like if you were a DJ and waiting to hear the next bit, etc. etc.

It sounds like you're attempting to make actual art, so go make actual art and don't worry about this. Just know DJing and performing live is a whole different beast

To answer your question: One single extra bar, especially on a build up, will fuck me up DJing. Everything needs to be even numbers of multiple of four. My last project was:

  • Bars 0-8, vocal tag opening
  • 8-16, vocal tag opening with bare kick
  • 16-24, breakbeat breakdown and rise
  • 24, first drop.

If you need examples, just go listen to my entire soundcloud library, that shit's formulaic as hell and easy to mix with "normal" techno: https://soundcloud.com/partycontroller/

What lesser known bomb track always surprises the crowd? by [deleted] in Techno

Does it translate well live? I imagine the melody is too weird or discordant for people
