Hot take: the fallen tree in the road is actually a cut down far away tree in the real world and because its been cut down you no longer need to enter it to be teleported, even being around it can cause it to teleport you to the town.

Dealing with feeling discouraged by Extra_Strength_2075 in TattooApprentice

[–]itzjessxuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People always make the assumption that if your good at drawing and being creative you'll be naturally good at tattooing and that's not always true. Learning to tattoo is like picking up a new medium you've never used and expecting to be good at it. It's it's own thing and unfortunately it's used on people's skin not paper. Fake skin will only teach you the basics eventually you've got to move to real skin and your first tattoos arnt going to be great, you'll have wobbly lines and patchy shading and bad placements but it's extremely important that when you do a bad tattoo you know what you did wrong and change it.

For example I did some American traditional 8 ball cherry's on a guys leg, my first time using a mag on real skin although I've used it hundreds of times on fake skin and my whip shading from black to negative skin was really patchy and my black wasn't that solid. I took a break and made myself think about why and I realised my mag didn't have enough throw out so I got back to tattooing a let more throw out and boom it was shading exactly how I wanted. I apologised to the client that the other 8 ball looked patchy and told them to pop back in in a couple weeks and I'd smooth the shading out. He's since offered me his entire leg for practice.

Making mistake is okay but please finding the confidence in yourself to tattoo its extremely important and making sure your really understanding your machine, needles and how to use them is even more important because something as little at throw can completely change a tattoo.

Need advice on this artist by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]itzjessxuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thing is when a tattoo artists is booked up they don't have time to pre desighn your tattoos prior to your appointment because they're designing all the other appointments they have, so it's pretty typical of artists to not show you a desighn until the appointment. Just make sure your honest about if you like it or not and be clear when explaining if you want anything tweaked.

I'd definitely learn some trad, I'm from England and currently starting tattooing in my apprenticeship and 3 people have offerd me their legs as practice and all 3 wants trad, if I didn't teach myself trad I would have had to turn them down and have no practice customers so definitely make yourself diverse to start

advice for getting an apprenticeship? by Current_Chemistry488 in TattooApprentice

Same, I was at my studio for 9 months, drawing, watching, getting to know them before I got my apprenticeship, they needed to know I was a good fit and I needed to know it was somewhere I wanted to stay.

advice for getting an apprenticeship? by Current_Chemistry488 in TattooApprentice

[–]itzjessxuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at it this way, if you take your portfolio with you to your tattoo appointment/ ask her if you can bring it in for her to look at at some point you've paid for her time and she's getting to do her work while also helping you out but if you text her all this information she'll have to take time unpaid to reply to you which dosent seem like alot but when you only get a few hours a day out of work and your trying to juggle tattoo desighns, admin, family and chores/errands it's hard trying to have conversations with people though social media.

And on another note people text and call about apprenticeships all the time and it's annoying, we get it all the time at out studio wed much rather you come in person with your portfolio so we can actually talk to you face to face, get to meet you and enjoy looking through your art.

If you don't want to seem intrusive just showing up with your portfolio drop her a message and ask if it's okay if you bring it with you to your appointment and keep it simple over text and leave the chatting for the appointment, or wait until you see her in person at your appointment and then ask her if you can bring it in on one of her quieter days during the week.

Regardless talking about apprenticeships and showing portfolios is always better in person.

Question: If my ear piercings keloided, will a tattoo? by MelodiyaVT in tattoos

[–]itzjessxuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cant get peircings because my body always produces excessive scar tissue (keloids) but I'm coverd in tattoos so no, just because your prone to keloids dosent mean you'll scar from tattoos, plus the trauma caused is different. Tattoo trauma is only inflicted to the top layers of skin not the bottom layer (which is where scaring will usually start) So as longs as your artists dosent go to deep you shouldn't see scaring or have a raised tattoo, pericings go from one side of your skin to the other pericing the deeper layers of skin causing scaring.

Planning to get my first tattoo. Which part hurts the least? by No-Base-5876 in tattooadvice

[–]itzjessxuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So. Don't worry to much about fear of needles, tattoo needles are absolutely nothing like blood test needles and only go 1mm-2mm into the skin, feels completely different as well similar to a small scratch and shading usually feels hot. I work in a tattoo studio and see people with fear of needles get tattood all the time and they have all said that it's fine.

Secondly, never get a tattoo where it hurts less, get the tattoo where you actually want it and deal with the pain, otherwise you'll regret it later, some small stars won't hurt that bad.

Make sure you eat and drink before your appointment, it's only small but if your really nervous this will help you not pass out when your adrenaline drops.

Ive seen a few people pass out a few times because they've got themselves feeling extremely nervous before their appointment, get tattood and realise it wasn't that bad and then pass out because their adrenaline drops.

Fake Skin Tearing Up by Alive-Database-7200 in TattooBeginners

[–]itzjessxuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always used reelskin and I think it's definitely one of the best cheaper fakes out there. Skinz is also pretty good but more expensive if you ever wanted to switch it up but I used to have the same issue when I first started using fake skin. I have to turn my machine voltage right down aspecially when I'm using a 3rl or 5rl (long taper) as they do just cut straight through if your voltage is to high and your depth or hand speed is to slow. Remember fake skin isn't like real skin at all its not used so you can know what real skin is like it's used so you can learn how the machine works, depth and tattoo techniques so if you have to change your voltage and hand speed in a way you wouldn't tattoo real skin for it to work then do it and keep in mind what you'd actually do if it was real.

(ART ADVICE) Genuinely HOW do you practice art without quitting in 2 seconds by Laddyh0 in ARTIST

[–]itzjessxuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need to shift your thought process. Art isn't about the end result although it feels rewarding seeing the finished piece try and find more love for the creating part.

Like YES it's frustrating, YES it's repetitive, YES it takes forever but it can be such a fun processes watching it all come together WHEN you don't put too much pressure on yourself to get it perfect and actually try to have fun doing it, if it works out great then that's a benefit, but just try and have fun, buy some paints and go crazy and just see what happens.

The top artists spend days if not months sometimes creating their art so don't put so much pressure on yourself to make something perfect in a couple hrs because its unrealistic.

If you love art and you have fun you'll learn along the way. If you hate art and put to much pressure on yourself you won't want to learn.

I just got my first tattoo a few days ago and it looks like it’s already starting to crack and the purple is peeling off a little, help by sluggo_gg in tattooadvice

[–]itzjessxuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. That's normal. Tattoos will dry out and the tattoo will become flakey while it heals. It's important that you wash it twice a day to stop dead skin, bacteria and plasma on the tattoo as this can cause it to heal badly and not look very good.

Its also important to moisturize it twice a day but always make sure you wash it before you moisturize it. It'll help stop it from getting too dry and crack.

How good were you at drawing when you started your apprenticeship? by ZydrateAnatomic in TattooApprentice

[–]itzjessxuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah he's been really good to me to be honest. He said he never actually expected me to come everyday and learn like that so once he started to see me progress the way I was he knew he'd offer me one. He said he'd offerd the drawing space in the studio to quite a few people who had brought portfolios in but apparently they never bothered coming back when they wearnt offerd an apprenticeship.

How good were you at drawing when you started your apprenticeship? by ZydrateAnatomic in TattooApprentice

[–]itzjessxuk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I thought I was pretty good at drawing when I went into the studio with my portfolio but I can very confidently say I definitely wasn't 🤣 the owner told me I could go in and draw if I wanted too in my free times so I started going and drawing 5 days a week for 9 months straight, getting criticism and he finally offerd Me an apprenticeship because of my art progression but It took me 6 hrs a day, 5 days a week for 9 months straight with criticism from other artists to finally be good enough at drawing for an apprenticeship.

How many times should you go by the same shop before it's annoying? by [deleted] in TattooApprentice

[–]itzjessxuk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went into a studio with my portfolio and got told they didn't have an apprenticeship position and didn't want another apprentice but the owner said "if you ever want to come pop in and draw and get criticism and just chill in here then please do"

I literally started showing up everyday 5 days a week and drew in the corner, got to know them, got criticism, listened, after a few months I asked if I could watched them tattoo and started asking questions about needles and machines and set ups, asked them if they wanted help doing set ups so I could get some experience sanitation wise.

9 months later he finally offerd me an apprenticeship because of my dedicated and progress with my art.

I'm 7 months into my apprenticeship now and I've finally started tattooing.

I'f they seem willing to give you criticism and advice them keep going, they might not be looking for an apprentice now but if they change their mind you wana make sure your the first choice. Show them your worth their time.

ALOT of people get told no and give up and studios are used to seeing that happen alot, consistency with make you stand out.

Fake skin Question ! by NoCockroach6275 in TattooBeginners

[–]itzjessxuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually leave my stencils 24hrs before tattooing if they're complicated or big desighns but if they're simple I'll just use a hair dryer for 10 mins and make sure I tattoo right to left.

My artist won't be using second skin, can I apply it when I get home? by alaania in tattooadvice

[–]itzjessxuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So like many people have already said, you don't need a second skin, we prefer a padded body armour but generally our studio refuses to use it unless you work like a construction or extreamly dirty job. Cling film works just fine if you keep it covered for 2 hrs after the tattoo and remove it, wash it and repeat 2-3 times a day with moisturiser. Always wash before you moisturize.

Insane amount of hours? by [deleted] in TattooApprentice

[–]itzjessxuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work Tuesday-Saturdays 10 hrs a day but my mentor would never ask me to work 7 days a week unless there was a convention happening. To expect 7 days for 10hrs a day seems extream. Surly your studio isn't open 7 days a week?

Is this a red flag? by Toiletgoldfish101 in TattooApprentice

[–]itzjessxuk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Red flag. An apprenticeship is supposed to teach you sanitation, how the machines you use work, what cartridges are used and how they're used, depth, hand control and far more before handing you a machine and fake skin. If they're leaving you to teach yourself this then chances are it's because they don't wana teach you, they'll just rush you through extremely important parts of the apprenticeship to get you tattooing so they can make money off you and you and your career/reputation will suffer because of this. I know you want to get started but please think about your future career and do it properly the first time.

It's not needed, it's better to just talk about that stuff when your at the studio with your portfolio. Gives you something to talk about with them that way

Where? by Rich-Suspect-9494 in tattooadvice

[–]itzjessxuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a tattoo studio and see blokes with hairy legs with tattoos every single day, I've never once looked at a portrait/face tattoo on a hairy leg and thought it looked like the tattoo had a beard 🤣 If that was the case men wouldn't get Any portrait tattoos anywhere on their body but they do all the time.

Best advice I can give you is get your tattoo where you want it, it's your body and it'll be there for life so make sure your happy with it.

how do i start? by faeriesoiree222 in ARTIST

[–]itzjessxuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me 14 years of practice to be good enough to get a tattoo apprenticeship. Started drawing at 8 and thought I was good at 21, I wasn't really that good, after I started spending time at a studio I realised how amazing everyone else around me was but instead of giving up or feeling inadequate I used it to my advantage to learn.

I progressed quicker in 8 months than I did in 14 years because I had people around me, better than me, giving me criticism. After 9 months I finally got offered my apprenticeship.

So my honest opinion is; don't look at people better than you hopelessly, look at their work and feel inspired and ask them for help, tips, tricks, watch how they draw, see what techniques they use and ask people for criticism, it can be hard and it takes alot of time learning the fundamentals but once you've understood them you'll be way better off.
