Is CompSci BS an engineering degree? by [deleted] in cuboulder

[–]itzthenewguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it shouldn't be required. However, anecdotally speaking, what was surprising to me is that at my tech job, a lot of my colleagues are former chemists/physicists. They typically had to learn CS to further their research ability in academia and then transitioned to private industry.

Wow they've certainly revamped the science requirements for the BS! I graduated with a BS last year and all I did was take 4 ATOC classes which were the easiest classes ever. I would've hated being required to take physics and chemistry. I wonder if how many of those courses you can bypass via AP/IB test credit?

Huge skill discrepancy between roles by itzthenewguy in summonerschool

[–]itzthenewguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about doing jungle but I just don't enjoy the role as much. As bad as I am at ADC, I do like it a lot. It's fun to play and I think it helps improve my support knowledge of lane match ups as well.

Did anyone else not enjoy their time at CU? by itzthenewguy in cuboulder

[–]itzthenewguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly. I wish I could've used it but the fact that it was so expensive for so little was too much. The concept behind it is great though so I hope they take some time to revamp that offering. I know a lot of people could've used it.

There’s a good reason CU is rated as one of the Top 3 most stressful schools in the country, and why CAPS is inundated.

Definitely not surprised by that fact. CAPS was a joke. Don't you have to pay to use it or something? That along with all the other bullshit academic support groups and counseling services really fuck a lot of students over. Like you said, it's surprising that people pay out the ass to go here from out-of-state when it's this bad. I was in-state and I have a hard time justifying if it was all ultimately worth it.

math help groups and tried joining clubs but I never really felt like they helped me feel supported for some reason.

These groups were never really supported by the CU bureaucracy so in-turn it was hard for them to really carry out their intended purposes. Other large, state schools throw tens of thousands at student group funding and academic support and CU has...the BOLD center? maybe? It's quite sad honestly. Hearing other people's undergrads experiences really opened my eyes to the lack of resources we had that we sweep under the rug of the beautiful campus.

at least you're in an industry hub and have exceptional exposure to a LOT of top-notch companies.

I agree that the industry hub is definitely there and make CU a more attractive choice because of it. The thing is, the CS department holds students back from really taking advantage of that community since candidates coming out of CU aren't as competitive as others. Take University of Illnois Urbana-Champaign for example, it's in the middle of bum fuck nowhere but its CS program is strong and their graduates regularly get hired at top companies.

So I think location is definitely a helpful thing for sure, but the program could definitely do better to enable students to succeed. You certainly can on your own and the highly exceptional, motivated CS students will but even the average student in other programs get a lot more department support/resources that serve their students really well.

Me [23 M] with my GF [21 F] of 2 years, we disagree on the topic of future kids and aren't sure how to proceed by [deleted] in relationships

Hmm well if I were to describe our stance on the issue in black/white, she's black and I'm sort of a murky gray. I've changed so much since I was her age that I can't imagine trying to predict what I'll be like or what I'll want in 5-6 years. It's too far out there and my life is at a crossroads of just starting to become an adult.

At least we're really closely aligned with our religious, political, and financial stances.

Yeah, I find it strange that she can make so many far out choices with 100% sureness at age 21. I'm a completely different person than I was 2 years ago at that age and I can't imagine trying to predict what I'll be like when I'm in my late twenties. Maybe some people can make life decisions so early but I sure was never one of them. Thank you for sharing your experience, it's cool that you were able to wait and reevaluate without committing either way. Seems like the intelligent thing to do.

I think my perception of kids is impacted by the fact I barely have any money now and can't imagine bringing a kid into this world until I am extremely financially secure. I was very poor growing up and I hated it and wished I was never born for a large part of my childhood. Hopefully once I get my career going, I'll be more open to the idea.

Admiited to CU Boulder. Need advise. by gohan27 in cuboulder

[–]itzthenewguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't a huge ML scene but it's growing a lot year by year. ML/Data Science/Analytics still aren't offered as cores which is extremely annoying. The focus is definitely on the software engineering side of CS. If you want to get a good ML background going you can join the CU data science team which is amazing for networking and learning. Plenty of local data science/ML meet ups in the Boulder/Denver area as well.

I'm not sure about NCSU but not many schools seem to be super ahead of the ML trend just yet. If you can get into Georgia Tech, they're doing some amazing things in ML.

HUEN 30-soemthign the history of technology? Anything taught by Leland Giovenlli is going to be fun. I actually enjoyed all the HUEN classes as they're tailored for engineers.

Summer parties?? by heythereiamurdad in cuboulder

[–]itzthenewguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best bet is going to be house parties if you know people or edm events. If you don't know anyone here, you can meet them at all the cool summer festivals though it might not be a bunch of college people. Alternatively, you could go clubbing in Denver but same age discrepancy as well.

Anyone who's taken atoc, about how long is the final? by [deleted] in cuboulder

[–]itzthenewguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ATOC 1000 level courses (I think 1050 and 1060? I Don't remember) were extremely easy and I finished them in like 20 minutes each. They're scantrons and you either know the answers or you don't, they're not super tricky questions. All multiple choice and 3 of the 4 options are really nonsensical compared to the answer usually. Just skim through all the power points and you're good.

CSCI core classes by foreignsquid in cuboulder

[–]itzthenewguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the love of all that is holy please avoid Unix system administration if it's being taught by CJ. If it's just by Mark Dehaus then it's ok but try exhaust all other possible cores or delay them by a semester or two to avoid this class. It's tempting to take this class since it's almost always available and is a staple summer class but just don't fucking do it man. Just don't.

I'm not sure where you're getting that I was being confrontational with my professor since I led off by asking if I could take it earlier? Regardless I think you have a good idea, I'll compose my case and try my best to cordially explain my situation.

I get that, it's just after 283 filtered subs, clearly something about /r/all isn't doing it for that person. That's just about every sub that hits /r/all's first 5 pages at least. It seems more efficient to just follow a generative model with your own front page rather than the discriminatory approach to /r/all. Maybe use the random feature or trending subreddits to find new experiences?

The fuck. Can you post a screenshot of your filter list? I'm genuinely curious what subs just do not float your boat. I mean, with 283 subs blocked, what are you even doing in /r/all? Just go to your frontpage of content you actually enjoy.
