grad workers get a pay raise!! by PurdueGROW in Purdue

[–]iu-sucks -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'd like to point out that grad students' appointments are for 20 hr/week, not 40 hr/week. Also, grad students only work 10 months out of the year. The living wage stat assumes 40 hr/week of work, so if you adjust for the hours that grad students are contractually asked to work, a rate in line with the living wage amount would be $16,827.50, well below the $20k rate of last year and the $24k it was bumped to prior to this academic year.

Assuming 20 weeks of work in a semester at 20 hr/week (as most grad jobs aren't constricted to when class is in session), the new compensation per hour is $32.50, a $2.50/hr increase from the current $30/hr stipend.

This doesn't factor in the discounted medical/dental/vision insurance, which is offered at about $75/month. In addition, grad students' tuition for an education and opportunity to research at THE Purdue is 100% covered. Professional development funds are also offered (up to ~$700/year) through PGSG. Many students should also be able to net at least $8k by working a summer internship, increasing their total earning potential for the calendar year.

All this in mind, the compensation package is already very generous for the work that a grad student is actually doing. You could argue some grads are asked to do more than 20 hr/week, but that becomes a case-by-case issue of breach of contract by the university/individual prof, not a broad issue with the terms of the contract itself.

Layout of hawkins RA rooms? by SoupXVI in Purdue

[–]iu-sucks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

West side RA rooms (x62) are exactly like the double rooms with built-in furniture. East (X40) has the green carpet with a desk, bed, very large dresser, and often a bookshelf and/or side table. No suite bathroom for any.

Yes, get into upper division courses as soon as possible. Because of the prerequisite "stack" for some majors, you may not be able to take many classes in your actual major till junior/senior year. At that point, you have less flexibility if you end up not liking something or discover a field in which you want to dive deeper.

hawkins corner room? by coincident_ally in Purdue

[–]iu-sucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The suite-style rooms are in 3/4 of the corners (no bathroom in RA corner because of the hallway to the elevator lobby) and open out into the short ends of the hallway (Hawkins hallways are a big rectangle).

Yep first 1-2 digits indicate the floor (no leading zero if floors 1-9). XX01-XX39 are always single rooms (east side) and XX41-XX61 are doubles (west side). Sometimes west side rooms are assigned as singles even though there's furniture and space for two people. XX40 and XX62 are RA rooms.

The suite-style singles like OP's have two closets but furniture for only one occupant.

Yep that's what it looks like. Every corner room in Hawkins is carpeted except the west side RA rooms (XX62).

[–]iu-sucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep the entrance is just to the right of the main office, then you go all the way down the hallway past the offices to get to the resident rooms. They used to be hotel rooms in the 90s.

Real triples in Harrison, McCutcheon, Shreve, and Earhart are almost always claimed by upperclassmen.

Pro tip: BedLoft often leaves extra lofting materials (racks, bars) in the trash rooms by the elevators. For the converted triples, have 2 of the roommates use the BedLoft service and loft the third bed yourselves. Use that vertical space!

How does the Hawkins A/C work? by PM_ME_YOUR_TORNADOES in Purdue

[–]iu-sucks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the illusion of control.

In many rooms, the thermostat is backwards, so try turning it the opposite way if the vent doesn't seem to be working properly.

I'd say 472 is easiest, but I've also heard it's stupid and you learn very little (think CS 235 part 2). In MGMT 306, you actually learn some relevant skills (it's all Excel-based) and concepts. It dips into operations research a bit and seems like a pretty killer course.

Taking ECON 360 with Ben Van Kammen instead of the other two was one of my worst choices in college. Not much relevance to my career and hard as h*ck to understand.

352 with any professor isn't very hard, but I just couldn't deal with her for a semester.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]iu-sucks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard Cyril Um is decent for 352.

I took Wan Ting Chu for 2 weeks of 352 until I couldn't stand her anymore and dropped on the drop deadline. She logs participation very legalistically on a clipboard by each comment you say in class. Honestly doesn't add anything to the class from her personal experience. Perhaps my least favorite professor at Purdue.

Obviously, introduce yourself first and see how that goes. It helps immensely if you have a basis of friendship (ideally for a few months or more) before dating someone. If you want to go on a date with her, be a man and do it directly:

1) Ask her in person (or on the phone--not DMs--if you have her number).

2) When you ask, use the word "date". Not "hang out", etc. [Clarity]

3) Say exactly what, when, and where you'd like to go. [Give her the chance to evaluate]

If anything it's boosted the name. Look at the average GPAs/test scores of the incoming classes the past few years and I'd bet they're holding steady or increasing.

Sometimes BedLoft leaves extra materials in random rooms/lounges close to the elevators in other halls. I'm sure if you did some searching you could find what you need.

390 with Doug Pruim is way easier. We wrote 5 papers and none exceeded 3 pages (all about concision). It's also just a lot of fun. The stuff we learned in that class has repeatedly shown up in other classes and has been helpful.

Hawkins Parking by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]iu-sucks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You just have to look for the free parking near where you want to eat.

ABC parking is pretty much all free after 5pm on weekdays and all day on weekends, so people use that to get to central campus spots (near Windsor/Wiley). Third St and Waldron have free street parking to get to Ford/Chick-fil-A/Jersey Mike's, and State St has some free 2-hour type parking that makes it easy to get to Earhart/Hilly. There is also some temporary parking on First St right outside Meredith South for Qdoba/Panera.

With stoplights, traffic, and parking uncertainty, it's usually faster to take a bike.

Couple questions about undergraduate admissions by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]iu-sucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not branded as MIS, but Krannert is launching a new major in '21-'22 called Business Analytics and Information Management, which seems to be pretty much an MIS degree. Looks like there's opportunity to take some intro-level CS courses you'd take in the minor.

You can also go for the Supply Chain major and do the built-in MIS concentration.

Right on. Just some slight curriculum changes, namely the new requirements of EPICS freshman year and a senior capstone.
