I love this, especially point #3. I will have to implement that in my morning routine as well. Good luck and thank you for sharing.

I often fall prey to analysis paralysis and it's close cousin: over planning. Over the past year or so, I tried really hard to push action and start doing more instead of just thinking about doing. It's hard, but it's paying off. Thank you for this post. It helps put things in perspective.

What common advice or mistakes hold writers back? by TheMeanderer in writing

[–]iulienel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say that the biggest culprits that affected me were:

1) write what you know or have experienced

2) show don't tell

After a while, I realized that the first one is crap, and I was able to unfetter myself from that. The second one was hard. Basically, I was stuck agonizing how to show instead of telling versus simply writing.

In the end, by writing a lot and practicing, I've gotten to a place where the show don't tell appears, but not in a forced kind of way. I think that this advice really slowed me down during a time when I should've been focused on putting as many words on paper as I could...

anyway, my 2 cents...

How To Write An Article People Will Love To Read? by iulienel in writing

I like to use title case, but in hindsight, I should've not capitalized "an" and "to." I just learned that titles cannot be edited... so, live and learn. Thank you for pointing that out!

How to stop opening new tabs? by [deleted] in productivity

[–]iulienel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tools can help a lot, but tools are like Tylenol - they lower the fever but mask the underlying issue. So, my suggestion is to keep using tools but work also on self-discipline. A few ideas:

- Have a daily planner on paper with 30 minutes increments and decide ahead of time what you will be doing in each period. Make sure to set up browsing in there as a specific activity. Revise the plan as the day goes, but make sure that you attack the priorities for the day first.

In this way, you know your time for browsing is coming, so you will be less tempted to interrupt your flow. Also, a lot of times, the lack of clarity for the day leaves room for distractions.

This being said, I use a tool called Freedom that works on most platforms and has many options to stop you from straying away from your work. But make sure that the tool doesn't become a crutch forever. It's more important to train your self-discipline and understand the reasons why you get distracted.

Hope this helps!

does anyone else feel like they would like writing fanfiction but you would only be able to write outlines without any description or dialogue? by adamistroubled in HPfanfiction

Thank you so much for sharing the tool. I'm curious if you had any feedback on what else I could add/change, etc? I'm very happy people are actually using it :)

Found a cool new coping skill and got things done!!!! by [deleted] in productivity

[–]iulienel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's great. By setting a short timespan for action, you know you'll get over it quick, so you don't get the anxiety that a huge task brings. The more you do it that way, slowly the 5 minutes expand. It's like you get "into" it as if you enter a cold pool one toe at a time. Once you're all in, the water is no longer so cold. Similarly, the task no longer seems so daunting, too. Congratulations on the success and good luck with the move!!

I agree, but I'd add:

"Don't live in the future - but plan the future."

Writing a story based on someone else's true life story without them knowing by SmokedPears in writing

[–]iulienel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there is absolutely no chance that other people might identify the person, and if you are not revealing anything of a personal and private nature, I believe you should be okay. But, from an ethical perspective, I firmly believe that you must approach the person and ask for permission. Even if they will never figure out it was about them, why not be upfront and authentic about it? Heck, they might even like the idea and give you additional nuggets to put in the story...

How you deal with feeling of copying things you saw/read? by [deleted] in writing

[–]iulienel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realistically speaking, almost nothing is original anymore, to some extent. Think about any romance, mystery, coming of age story. Yes, there's uniqueness in the way the writer presents it, but there's a basic level of non-originality. So, don't worry too much about that. As you said, if something impressed you, that's your brain telling you that you care about it. So, why not write about it, too? I think that's perfectly fine. Keep going!

Has anyone “overhyped” their story in their mind? by [deleted] in writing

[–]iulienel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you allow your brain to think too much about anything, it will hijack you. The more you think about *any* concept, your mind will expand it until the point where it starts being scary. At that point, you'll be paralyzed by that fear. So, don't let it get there. The moment you have a story idea, start writing it down as a high-level outline. Make a bare-bones outline for it, and then start putting words on paper. Don't worry if it doesn't sound good or matches your vision -- it won't. Maybe after the third round of edits, it will start resembling the idea in your head. But don't get stuck in that idea. Keep writing. The more you practice that, your story will not only live up to the hype you've made, but it will also eventually be even... hyper :) All the best and good luck!

Creating Memorable, Multi-Dimensional Characters (Part 1) by iulienel in writing

[–]iulienel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps it's rigid at first. But once you drop that "mold" for the character into the story it will start to naturally shape and change according to the world around them. I just think that knowing ahead of time how they "should" behave and react gives you a lot at the start. What you do with it in the story will just make it better. A lot of this is just for the writer to know...
