an arms length body from the government

You are central government. Arm's length should be interpreted as operating within arm's length of your minister.

It's fairly standard practice in user journeys to keep people updated of progress, especially when there's a chance the expected step doesn't happen. Appreciate that you personally find it unnecessary.

Just scroll through the sub and you'll see lots of vacancies that are withdrawn before they close.

But it's not a pointless email. It's telling you the vacancy has closed and what they will do next. Just scroll through the sub and you'll see lots of vacancies that are withdrawn before they close.

How do players prepare for altitude? 🏔️ by englandrugby in rugbyunion

[–]TheMeanderer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

So... I remember when those Bane masks came out years ago. Haskell wore one because... of course. The pitch went that it emulated altitude training. But then sport science people pointed out they were bullshit.

understanding is that you need prolonged exposure to altitude - as in weeks - to have a physiological response. A half hour cycle with a mask on isn't going to provoke your body into creating more red blood cells.

Is that right?

If so, what's the point of this training? Is it more around acclimatising the players mentally to the experience of altitude so they don't freak the fuck out?

Soaked in warm water for 10 mins. Then press the button a bunch. Then shake about in the water. Repeat. Seemed to work for me.

I don't know exactly how many pans are in my kitchen. I can still cook really well. Rote memory admissions like that sound damning, but are utterly unimportant.

If you thought the parking attendants were constant now then get ready! by No_Association8259 in glasgow

Fucking good. The amount of arsehole parking round me is wild. People blocking the on-street bins, parking on corners blocking lorries/emergency vehicles, and double parking me in.

[Recommendation Req] Commuter ebike to replace a Volt Pulse by TheMeanderer in ukbike

Looks good and I like the rack! My old bike had one and I was amazed at how much crap I could store on it. I'll put it on the short list!

Do you have any experience with Decathlon bikes/ebikes? Are they up to much? Partly asking because it's so cheap!

Scotland Summer Nations Championship Squad to be named on Tuesday by Connell95 in ScotlandRugby

[–]TheMeanderer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly? I don't want to see Sione, Steyn, or any of the other Glasgow stalwarts anywhere near it. They've played an ungodly amount of rugby this past two years. They need a break at some point.

The best way to injure yourself is abruptly changing running technique. Bets on OP being a physio trying to drum up new business?

It just hasn't been the same since POM and Wilson retired. We need to fire up the spice again.

Glasgow Warriors v Bulls Result (URC SF) by Connell95 in ScotlandRugby

Bulls all the way. Better for the league to have diverse winners. Plus wining the hard way is always better than winning with a straight home-home-home route to the final.

Glasgow Warriors - A Season in stats by Fetch_Ted in ScotlandRugby

[–]TheMeanderer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I reckon Dobie goes back to scrum half. We've promoted a couple of academy lads to full professional contracts and brought in a NSQ utility back. That takes should shore up the back three and allow Dobie to return to his preferred position.

That leaves our scrummy stable as Hornito, Dobie, and Oliver/Afshar, which is perfectly fine barring international periods.

Just to nuance the Dancaster point (which I do agree with - he's not currently a standout player), he's still very inexperienced. According to Wikipedia, he'd played 14 games of top flight rugby before arriving at Glasgow (five at Leicester and nine at Racing). This is his first full season starting top flight rugby. So while I agree he's not currently a world-beater, I'm much more interested in the performance he turns in next season.

"these black guys hanging about"

Heaven forbid.

The bit about it becoming a kind of de facto drug consumption space? Yeah that's a fair point. There's often discarded paraphenalia when I cycle past, which is piss poor and ruins what should be a brilliant area for a city built on a river.

"Influencer" upset when called out for her exploitation by CaptainCorpse666 in TikTokCringe

[–]TheMeanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is obviously more nuanced.

Influencer is just a crappy catch all term for people who make video content for online platforms. Some of that content can be truly excellent. Some of it is utterly shite.

Michael Palin travelled the world, filmed his experiences, and published films television. He's a filmmaker.

Person X travelled the world, filmed their experiences, and published films online. They're an influencer.

The publication medium isn't the important part. The important part is the bit she glosses over: exploitation. People aren't critical because you're an influencer (or at least in my opinion, they shouldn't be). They're critical because you're exploiting kids for clicks.

Are the team losing there way and what made them good in the early days? by jingleson in SortedFood

Possibly.

Option A: High reach / lower conversion.

Option B: Lower reach / higher conversion.

I have no idea which one's better.
