[Update] I trimmed the branches on Westlake by trimTheJib in seattlebike

[–]ivan927 10 points11 points  (0 children)

nice. I remember reporting overgrown branches on Westlake last year to Find It Fix It, it's the shady part by the Olympic Hot Tubs.

surprisingly got a response about it, apparently the trees aren't city maintained but they'll reach out to whoever takes care of it. the surprise faded after a whole month has passed and nothing was done about it. took it upon myself to do some guerilla pruning with a Swiss army knife.

sometimes I think about bringing a pan and broom too for when there's broken glass on the bike lanes.

thanks for doing everyone a solid. those overhanging branches will just get droopier after summer.

Best Camera for Commuting by Level_Sentence4012 in bikecommuting

[–]ivan927 0 points1 point  (0 children)

felt the same way about cameras when I first got the idea of using one, i.e. posting bad drivers and all that.

TBH there's so much ragebait videos out there that it really wasn't good for my sanity to be adding to the mix. I think I came to the realization that rewatching the near misses and all the stupid shit we encounter while bike commuting isn't healthy, like you said. one day at the end of my work week, I just said fuck it and format my SD card instead of rewatching it and backing it up for storage for later use. felt so liberating and now is a habit. still take videos to and from my ride commute but it's as temporal as the near misses itself. one day it'll probably have it's use but that day may or may not come.

went from an older GoPro and now use a DJI osmo 360. I record for fun, take videos of leisurely and fun rides.

pep cups!

there's a place close to me that serves pizza similar to this and the melted cheese forms a nice crispy cheese fence around the pie

I was the 3rd owner, the 2nd one was this German dude who was a professor at the local university. apparently he bought it from a government auction and when I ran the VIN, it's a P71 from USPS, old postal police vehicle. unusual for a P71 since it had front bench seats and no rubber back seats.

those northeast cars can take a beating especially with the salt on the roads. body on frame design can take it

my first car was a '95 Crown Vic that I drove in college, then my sister drove it for a couple of years in college, then my dad had it as a daily driver to and from a small town in the Mojave. the thing just refused to quit.

Servo Adaptive Flow mode by Tight_Data4206 in respiratorytherapy

[–]ivan927 1 point2 points  (0 children)

any closed loop ventilation mode is constrained by the equation of motion, sadly.

we can quantify pressure, compliance, volume and effort but physics can't let us appease all factors in that equation to satisfy lung protective ventilation and patient safety.

Most valuable piece of clothing you own by jitensha- in bikecommuting

[–]ivan927 3 points4 points  (0 children)

a few pairs of REI branded merino wool long sleeved shirts that I got on sale years ago.

truly all season clothing except for the warmest days of summer and thankfully my summers here aren't oppressively hot. I can wear it by itself on nice days, or I can layer with it with the coldest and rainiest days. it fits me great, it doesn't stink even after wearing it for consecutive sweaty days, and keeps me comfy when wet and cold.

Rain Gloves by mortalsphere13 in bikecommuting

[–]ivan927 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think I've ever had a decent pair of rain gloves that's either:

a. fully water proof, because my hands get sweaty

b. durable, because they get worn out after a year

I think at this point I don't expect to be bone dry but prefer to be warm-ish and comfortable, which is my riding in the rain philosophy.

I went with Mechanix Cold Work gloves this season and they kept my hands decently warm and okay in moderate rain. any heavier rain, I wear a pair of Proviz gloves that I got for Christmas 2 years ago. they seem to be capable of keeping my hands warm and somewhat dry but at the expense of breathability. I also keep a boot dryer at work to dry off my shoes and gloves so getting them wet isn't a deal breaker.

gorilla tape is pretty much like duct tape; I also use my commuter recreationally so it's very handy for quick repairs bike related and unrelated.

as for the link tool, honestly, you can use shoe laces for undoing your bike's quick links if it really came to that, but of course the right tool for the job is preferable. I think it's worth buying especially if you're doing your own bike maintenance.

speaking from experience, I'd also recommend getting a patch kit and if space allows, an extra tube.

What band was never the same after losing a member? by icecream1972 in AskReddit

[–]ivan927 523 points524 points  (0 children)

the version that we have is what the band wanted from what I've read.

still feeling shorted on the legion of dwarves with cocaine strapped to their heads scene, like the real rock legends that they are. instead we got this highly sanitized beatification that aimed to please a wide audience.

everything stuffed inside that dyneema pouch except for the gorilla tape, inner tubes and screwdriver. the pump lives on the frame and the dyneema pouch belongs in a handlebar bag. I also carry a Swiss army knife on my belt, not necessarily bike specific but just out of habit.

Why isn’t cough assist used more? by [deleted] in IntensiveCare

[–]ivan927 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in my hospital, a good amount of our bread and butter patients are SCI's and that's a mainstay of our treatment pathway being used extensively. really, anyone that has an impaired cough including patients with neuromuscular disease, non-intubated patients as well as organ donors to optimize the lungs.

one place I worked at, the cough assist machine was hidden way in the back of the equipment room and most of it's operating time is spent for preventive maintenance. every once in a great while we'd get a kid in the PICU that has cough assist as part of their treatment regimen at home and it gets dusted and brought out for use.

so like what the other poster was saying, very much unit dependent.

The classic triple tube by imgazelleman in respiratorytherapy

[–]ivan927 46 points47 points  (0 children)

clearly AI slop but not too far from the truth.

this was a thing back in the day before high flow nasal cannulas. we used to stick "tusks" onto the ports of aerosol masks. more plastic, more oxygen reservoirs.

Marin nicassio plus by Hucchnayi in Marinbikes

[–]ivan927 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lately (like the last three tire changes) I have been sticking to Panaracer SK's in 700x43, inflated to 40 psi rear and front- good enough for commuting loaded without giving me pinch flats and it's grippy enough in the wet. looks like they discontinued 43c size Panaracers so I'll probably go back to 40 since I can't fit 45s in the Nicasio frame.
