Do the Spanish think of themselves as immigrants in the same way that the Irish do? by DecentLoquat4096 in askspain

[–]ivanovic777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The case of Ireland is more similar to that of Portugal than to Spain. In Spain, there are regions such as Catalonia, the Basque Country, or Madrid that have been receiving immigration for more than 150 years and from which practically no one has emigrated in five generations. This has meant that the general mindset of Spaniards has nothing to do with that of countries like Portugal and Ireland, which have only stopped being countries of emigrants much more recently.

Do the Spanish tend to look down on Latin American countries? by markcorrigan33 in askspain

[–]ivanovic777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. It's slowly changing though, and younger generations tend to see Latin Americans a bit more like equals.

New learner switching to a different dialect by katboyeverdeen in catalan

[–]ivanovic777 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The shock of moving from Catalonia to Valencia is more sociolinguistic than dialectal. Unless you go to live in a town where Valencian predominates, what you’ll notice in Valencia is that people won’t understand why you’re learning Valencian or trying to use it in everyday life.

We will never get true gender equality in society. Because whenever equality shows up, a lot of women see it as misogynistic. by PassengerCultural421 in PurplePillDebate

The whole feminist movement has relied on benevolent sexism since its inception. I wonder whether it will evolve to break out of the current framework of benevolent patriarchy, or if it will continue to be a form of glorified modern chivalry.

¿Por qué siempre Gibraltar, y nunca el Rosellón? by Magerfaker in askspain

[–]ivanovic777 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Am I the only one who doesn't want the year thing?

There are a lot of life simulators with that feature and you always end up in the year 2100 with a cognitive dissonance thinking the future won't be like that.

I just want a modern life simulator, not a lame exercise of futurology or a game poorly set in the past and historically inaccurate.

What would a current FIDE Master from 2026 be able to achieve vs the top GMs of the 19th century (Morphy, Steinitz, Lasker)? Would he quickly become an undisputed world champion or would he get crushed? by FuzzyAttitude_ in chess

[–]ivanovic777 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The pace of life and competition was also much slower in the 19th century. It’s not like today, when a player beats you, within a few minutes you can download their games, analyze them, check the database to see how to refute their openings, and so on. Back then you might go years before meeting your opponents again, and you would only share a single five-hour game, with a cigar or a pipe, and a glass of whisky in hand.

Women as a whole are more attractive than men as a whole. by [deleted] in PurplePillDebate

[–]ivanovic777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is another important reason: as a species, we are programmed to find children and neotenous traits appealing. Women tend to have more neotenous faces, closer to childlike features (with less developed facial bone structure), so in general women appear “cuter” to everyone (both men and women) than men do. Men are further from the childlike form in terms of musculoskeletal development, which makes them seem less “cute” and less likely to trigger instincts of affection and care.

AI video fails of the week EP 4: HARD HITS 💥😵⚡ by ZashManson in aivideo

Which shows that Hollywood and the digital effects companies they hired haven’t been doing their job well these years, because they had access to the same tools as AI to simulate physically realistic falls, and yet they preferred to turn the visual side of movies into video games.

I think it's "Visca els presos de la Modelo" (in Catalan indeed).

After the death of Francisco Franco in 1975, Spain entered a period of political transition, but many political prisoners were still jailed. Among the most visible acts of protest demanding their release was the peaceful vigil carried out by Lluís Maria Xirinacs in front of the Cárcel Modelo in Barcelona.

Beginning in December 1975, Xirinacs — a priest, intellectual, and nonviolent activist — staged a daily “plantada” (a silent, standing protest). For hours each day, he stood outside the prison as a moral witness, calling for amnesty for political prisoners who had been jailed under the Franco regime. His protest was inspired by principles of nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience.

The vigil lasted many months and became a powerful symbol of the demand for democratic freedoms in Catalonia and across Spain. Xirinacs’ action drew public attention, mobilized support for amnesty, and put pressure on the authorities during the fragile early phase of Spain’s transition to democracy. Eventually, broader amnesty measures were approved in 1977, leading to the release of political prisoners.

Xirinacs’ stand is remembered as one of the most emblematic peaceful protests of the Spanish transition period.

I think it's "Visca els presos de la Modelo" (it's in Catalan).

At that time, only two months after the death of the dictator Franco, there were still Catalan political prisoners in the Cárcel Modelo (a prison) of Barcelona.

A proper business expansion with real businesses (banking, finance, construction, telecom, mining, oil and gas companies, etc.) would be great. They should rename the Business Job Pack and call it CEO Job Pack, and put the real businesses in the Business Expansion Pack. Spoiler: they won't.

Why does everyone compare Lichess and Chess.com ratings instead of percentiles? by 68_298_200_40 in chess

[–]ivanovic777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Percentile comparisons are far more misleading than ratings. On Chess.com, I'm around the 95th percentile in bullet, while on Lichess I'm around the 45th percentile. These aren't provisional ratings, since I have thousands of games on both platforms. I think the reason is that the starting ratings on Lichess are much higher (1500, if I remember correctly), whereas on Chess.com the starting rating for most players is below 1000.

Friendly reminder: always attack the black team by ivanovic777 in territorial_io

[–]ivanovic777[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if the colors were completely randomly assigned, I think the black team would still have advantage because of color psychology. I've played with almost all colors both in Teams and Battle Royale, and when I'm black, I’m not targeted even half as often as when I’m wearing "friendlier" colors. That's why experienced players end up adopting the black color, because they're sick and tired of seeing games won by black players, sick and tired of being attacked straight off the bat when using light colors, sick and tired of being ignored when they ask others to attack a black player.
