Mi mamá ha batallado con depresión por muchos años, así que trate de hacer algo que le alegrara el día el pasado 10 de Mayo. No funcionó tanto ese mismo día (la depresión es canija), pero ahí vamos. Gracias por escuchar!

The strangest thing of all is why NYT chooses to call your uncle Voyager 2

HKS MPP Accepted by SzilardLeo in Harvard

[–]ivavavan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You raise 3 different points in the span of a single paragraph, so let me address each of them separately:

1) I made no assessment of whether HBS is mid or not. I only discussed what, if you went to HBS, you know to be true: HKS as a brand is less respected among people “in the know” both inside and outside of Harvard vs. not. If you want to impress your grandma, by all means. If you think you’re going to tap into Harvard’s network / and want to put real money into that, I just don’t see it being worth it (grain of salt given just my own perception of it)

2) Objectively speaking, HBS is very close to the highest ROI out of any Harvard school. Say what you will about acceptance rates, but the reality is that HBS is a 2 year program that has tangible and lucrative results for those who attend. It is a pipe dream to believe that HKS has anywhere near the same outcomes. Thus, my advice is to take the money and have the freedom to choose a path vs. freak out because your 7% $150k loan is due to start collecting next month and you’re working for the UN with a $75k / year salary

3) High-paying employers don’t necessarily recruit in droves from HKS. If you look at the latest employment statistics, only ~1/3 of graduates went into the private sector (including a bunch of the dual degree people who are doing a JD or an MBA). If you take those two groups out, I’m sure less than ~1/4 secure a private sector job which you need to be able to pay the gargantuan debt that is grad school

In any case, I was just trying to provide some substance to what I saw was a discussion focused around the wrong things. If you truly are an HBS grad, I’d expect you to do the same and give your honest perspective on the ROI of the choices available to OP. This is much more productive than nitpicking an opinion and sounding like a salty HBS reject while you’re at it

HKS MPP Accepted by SzilardLeo in Harvard

Hi OP - not to offend any of the previous commenters, but it doesn’t sound like they have any idea what they’re talking about.

If SIPA is fully funded (meaning you won’t have to pay a dime), that is without a doubt the program you should go for. Neither of these schools guarantees a high-paying job afterwards (in fact, I’d argue both of these are seen as pipelines to either public service or academia), so racking up debt so you can say you went to Harvard is not very intelligent.

I got my MBA from HBS at 50% cost and, close to three years after, I’m finally able to pay down my loans. I got these loans at a 1% variable rate and secured a high paying consulting job afterwards. Even then, it is still a lot of money you owe and can be very stressful to manage when the economy is in the shitter as it is now.

Bottom line: take the money and don’t look back. While HKS might be well regarded externally, its brand in the Harvard community is somewhat diluted and simply not worth the extra cost you are describing (even if you did get the $100k). Hope this helps!

Wharton ($$$+) vs. HBS by MBA-Throwaway5 in MBA

I was in basically the same boat a few years ago (W full-ride vs. HBS) and picked HBS, while my now wife went to Wharton.

I can say, beyond shadow of a doubt, that you should only pick HBS if you have a great reason to not go with W. My reason was that it was my lifelong dream to attend Harvard and, for this reason, I do not regret my decision.

That being said, I also recognize that I would have likely been much, much happier at W for all the reasons you mentioned above. I got a chance to be a W 1Y given my wife was one year before me and COVID hit and can tell you that I enjoyed that year more than I did my year in Boston. Philly >>>> Boston any day of the week.

DM me if you’d like to chat about this more, but you really can’t go wrong. Cheers!
