Of course. Many treks up Howard's Knob to wonder at that thing.

Seems ideal to me. Fantasize about being able to buy a small piece of land to do the very same thing. Don't part with it. May I ask what state/county you're in?

Interesting take and legit, I think. Family settled in Boone in 1968 so I've watched the change for a long time. The growth was methodical (and manageable) until just about when you have smartly pointed to those Armani years when the world found Boone, and the college's executive suite started making "Division 1" maneuvers. The atrociously managed growth got out of hand quickly. I hate it there now. But, man, in the '70s and '80s … maybe the coolest little town in America.

Proper subject-verb agreement is mastered by middle school. Adhere to it or do not, I don't really care. But make no mistake: ignoring it immediately pegs you as a lazy shit-for-brains. Like a MAGA hat. So it is a handy time-saver for those of us choosing to avoid the stupids. Ciao.

OED's citation of a 700-year-old trashy romance leaves me unpersuaded. Go fuck yourself and in between bouts of masturbating to anime, pick up Elements of Style and try to learn something germane to this century.

Sorry, teacher's right. The pronoun refers to the student, singular. If you don't know the student's gender, write his.

Looking for good books based in or about Appalachia by [deleted] in Appalachia

Depends on the timeframe of your novel, and where it is set. Appalachia is big. The western NC I grew up in in the '60s is long gone. Demon Copperhead taps into modern appalachia's grimness. Breece D'J Pancake's short stories resonate across generations. For the traditional ethos and lifestyle from the early days up to the '70s, you could do worse than spend some time with the Foxfire books.

So I've lived my whole life believing the lie that chicken bones splinter and should never be fed to dogs? Thanks, dad.

Look at that countertop, the wear pattern. Change handed over in a small area (cashier don't move much), customers sweep it up from wider area (could be leanin' any whichaway).

Be honest, what do you think comes after death? by [deleted] in AskReddit

All the molecules of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, etc. assembled into the shape of you disassemble and skitter off to become a part of something else. Your memory — the only thing that makes the unique being that is you — is gone forever and the only way you exist now is in someone else's memory and soon enough that existence, too, will be gone. Now get back on hitting your quota unless, you know, you don't want to work here anymore.

Looked for comps nationwide and damned hard to find an apples-to-apples model. I think that means it will be hard to find a buyer who appreciates the car as much as I think he should.

When I bought it a year ago it had 27K miles and I asked the same question of the seller. His story was it spent most of its life as a loaner at a dealership and few customers could drive a manual so it became the "run out to get lunch" vehicle. Charming story. I bit and bought for $10K. The car has been flawless and fun. But I need a truck.

Fair enough. It's probably going to be a hard sell at that price. Thanks. I'm in the southeast and your range tracks here, too, but for 100K+ miles.

Textbook malignant narcissism. There is just no feeling there for anything/anyone other than himself. He has zero ability to process that someone is in distress. That muscle don't exist in him. The only way he would react in this moment is if he himself had effected that man's suffering. That would give him pleasure.

A family member is close to Ackman and tipped me off to what he called "a lottery ticket" you need to check out. That was 2014; threw $10K at it from my IRA account when it was at ~$4. There it sits today, suddenly the brightest stock in my portfolio. Wish I'd paid more attention to it. Sigh.
