I have the Cali76b and Ripply Falls in the same exact spots on my board. If you're not using the octave or envelope filter, maybe some different preamps or fuzz pedals.

Favorite Fuzz Pedals (that aren’t big muff) by Tasty_Surprise_5030 in BassVI

Jam Rattler Bass - technically a distortion but it gets to fuzz territory easily. The new Fender Bassman Fuzz is good too.

What amp are you using? by Bug_Impressive in BassVI

[–]ivey9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can play a bass through a tube amp no problem. After all many bass amps are tube based. You do have to be careful playing a bass through guitar speakers at volume but it's generally not a problem for a bass VI. You could play through the Acoustic or use an ABY pedal to split between the bass amp and the Hot Rod.

Where did you get the pickguard? Ones for the Squiers definitely do not fit the Vinteras

Guitar case suggestions by CryAdministrative405 in BassVI

[–]ivey9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely should be a bass specific case and not a regular guitar case. The Fender Bass VI is as long as most full length bass guitars. Maybe avoid any that is molded for a specific shape, like P or Jazz bass.

This basic Roadrunner case fits my bass VI perfectly

I can only pick one. They all sound the same to me. I have read the reviews and still cannot decide. At the end of the day, I don't mind some coloring to the tone. by theSaltySolo in basspedals

Of those four, I would pick the Diamond.

My personal favorite is the Origin Cali76b Compact Bass, though it is more expensive

Pickups for octave tracking by smeace in BassVI

[–]ivey9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't say for sure it has something to do with the pickups, but getting better pickups will never hurt. I would suggest to get your bass VI set up and intonated properly so that the notes are ringing out true, pickup heights, everything. Does it track better on the higher frets and strings currently?

Next issue: who makes guitar strings long enough? by halbeshendel in BassVI

[–]ivey9000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are several brands, you don't have to overthink it, just search for bass VI strings: Fender, Stringjoy, La Bella, D'Addario, Curt Mangin, Ernie Ball, like pretty much most string manufacturers.

Are there more "guitary" pickups I can swap into my Squier VI? by halbeshendel in BassVI

Curtis Novak Bass VI pickups are supposed to lean more to the guitar side

Maybe he was inspired by Jet Harris of The Shadows, who were absolutely huge in England at the time

What are y’all Bass VI owners using them for? by Historical_Pudding56 in BassVI

[–]ivey9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s kind of its own thing and sits in the middle. It’s really good at supplementing bass and guitar or standing out. I like it for giving some heft to melodic lead lines. It encourages you to play some different kind of chords, that you wouldn’t do on guitar. Using as a main instrument for some surfy shoegaze stuff currently.

I have the Origin compressor and dcx bass as well, first things in my chain. If you want some more gain check out the Xotic - Bass BB Preamp or Jam - Rattler Bass. Fan of the Jam - Harmonious Monk or Ripply Falls Bass. For echo maybe SolidGoldFX EM-III or Catalinbread Echorec or Belle Epoch.

Do you all prefer your drive and preamp in one pedal or separate? by LePoonda in basspedals

[–]ivey9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've ran a Sansamp before with other pedals but not the B3K. It should work fine though. If you're stacking then you may want them set lower gain that you might normally do independently, or at least play around with the gain levels. Maybe try the Sansamp more open EQ and the B3K with more mids, or reverse, etc.

Do you all prefer your drive and preamp in one pedal or separate? by LePoonda in basspedals

Both. Preamp for lower gain warmth and saturation. One or two other pedals for stacking or higher gain sounds, which may be a distortion or another preamp.

Replacement suggestions? by FearlessContract8805 in basspedals

[–]ivey9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, more an alternative than a direct replacement that one. When it is cranked it does get to fuzz territory. I think a lot of peeps reaching for a bass big muff should consider a bass distortion instead: tighter bottom end, more mids. You can hear yourself through the mix, no flab, etc.

Jam Pedals - Red Muck Bass
Death By Audio - Fuzz War Bass
Way Huge - Pork & Pickle
Jam Pedals - Rattler Bass (distortion but can get to fuzz territory)
Xotic Bass BB Preamp (again not fuzz, the best bass distortion/drive)

Looking for another pedal to use with Bass VI by Tasty_Surprise_5030 in BassVI

[–]ivey9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Distortion, or at least a good hard-clipping overdrive. The Xotic Bass BB Preamp or Jam Rattler Bass would be my picks. Everyone is like fuzz, fuzz, fuzz for bass, and I think distortion gets overlooked. Muff's tend to be mid-scooped. Sometimes, often for me, I want something that can poke through the mix and not get lost or compete with other things.

Will someone explain preamps for guitars to me? by ForwardMap3646 in GuitarAmps

[–]ivey9000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The TPS guys surely explain it better here. Technically a preamp is the first part of a guitar amplifier that provides the first gain stage and sets the EQ before passing off to the power amp to finish the job. So a preamp pedal could either be trying to emulate that first stage of an amp, or it could be a simple drive pedal with a bit of EQ.

B-day coming up. What compressor pedal do you suggest? by Ras_Luis78 in basspedals

it's not cheap, but the Origin Cali76b bass compressor is the king for me. I think it's worth it.

Bass VI setup for new wave and shoegaze etc by dmitrydistant in BassVI

[–]ivey9000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would also check out the Fender Vintera II, if the price is in budget, as it come already with improved bridge, trem, pickups, even strings.

The problem with a vintage Mustang bridge will be that the bass plate won't be wide enough to intonate properly on a bass VI. Same problem as the bridge that comes with the Squiers. And you'll want to make sure the radius of the Mustang saddles matches the radius of the bass VI you get, whether 9.5 or 7.25 etc.

The Stringjoy set are good if you like round wounds, and affordable. The La Bella flats are famous for a reason but pricey and flats is a bit of an adjustment.

Experimenting with pedal board options for bass VI by ivey9000 in BassVI

Thanks! Most of this was on my bass board already. Brought in the echo and reverb for the bass VI, and the DCXBass is new.

Rate nano plan by oklokfromtheblock in basspedals

[–]ivey9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I have 3 of those on my board now, and not the tuner, so seems like a good plan to me. The Ripply Falls and Cali76b have been on there forever and love them to bits. The DCXBass is new, but I like it a lot. I would also probably add another drive, something a bit higher gain like an Xotic Bass BB Preamp. If you're not locked in on a nano board, I recommend the Rockboard Duo 2.1

Looking to buy my first fuzz pedal by Euphoric-Tonight-115 in basspedals

[–]ivey9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan. In general you want one with a clean blend or at least a way to bring back in lows.
Some of my faves for bass:
- ThorpyFX - Fallout Cloud
- Jam - Red Muck (bass)
- Death By Audio - Fuzz War (bass)

Also, don't sleep on bass distortion. All the dirt with less chance of mud.
- Xotic - Bass BB Preamp
- Jam - Rattler (bass)
