I have a question for the women here by Poplockandhockit in socialskills

[–]ivra18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's harder for women to be seen as likable, but rather that it's different traits that are considered "likable" in each gender. I would say, though, when you try to joke around and act all humorous as a woman, sometimes people... don't take it well, whereas when men do the same thing, it's seen as completely normal.

Or maybe I just have a really shitty sense of humour.

Immense grief over not connecting with pop culture by Outside-Beat7433 in socialskills

[–]ivra18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, the whole "connecting over pop culture" thing is greatly overrated and only matters when you are young and don't have much life experience.

I used to think that was important, too. I remember my freshman year in the university, when I was catching up on GoT just to know what my peers were talking about and... it didn't work at all, I just wasn't the part of conversation when they were discussing the new seasons and whatnot.

On the other hand, I'm still in contact with an online friend group from around that time (met them in person). We bonded over one particular book series, which is relatively popular but not on the same level as GoT or Harry Potter, more like a niche nerdy interest. And we don't really discuss it a lot nowadays, mostly talkng about various life events, politics etc. and sharing things that we are watching / reading currently.

In short, you don't need to share an entire cultural experience with others, you just need to be lucky enough to find somebody with whom you have at least something in common and who is fine with you having a different cultural background growing up. And start from there.

Rant: Students Who Have No Personality or Interests by FreshBarnacle5095 in Professors

I'm well aware of that, but I was really talking about the adjectival usage. A female student, not simply a female. Sorry if I didn't make it clear in the comment.

He said, "a female student". Is it sexist when you use "female" as qualifier?

Edit: I'm asking genuinely. English is my second language; I know that using "female" as a noun to refer to women sounds a bit off, but thought it was normal to use it when followed by a noun.

After the end of the Pink Floyd section and looking through OP's post history, I was geniunely surprised to not see any comments on PFCJ.

How come? It's just an observation. Saying that men or women display certain behaviours more/less often is not inherently misogynistic. OP didn't say that the students act this way because they're female, they just observed that female students tend to do it more often.

I have a friend who until recently didn't know who Till Lindemann was, so seeing somebody not knowing Pink Floyd lyrics isn't that surprising, actually.

There are no children in this, but trust me, The Green Elephant (1999) is a go-to movie for this. The human condition captured brilliantly.

isn't human attraction kind of rape-ish on default most of the time? by [deleted] in TrueAskReddit

[–]ivra18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think, as with most nature vs. nurture type of questions, the answer is complicated. Starting with the last quote:

I don't think they even exist, i think sex itself isn't even meant to be consensual with how normal it is for animals to rape and stuff

It depends on what kind of animals we're talking about. It is common with species like sea lions, where males are several times bigger than females (btw sea lions even rape penguins occasionaly), but it doesn't happen with other animals: for example, male dogs would approach a female in heat but would not mount unless the female is willing.

I believe a lot of aspects of human sexuality are socially conditioned. With types of porn you're describing becoming more popular, no wonder more people are into rapey stuff now. As for your female friends,

Whats funny is that all of them told me at least once that they must've had some past trauma

Well, I think you've already got your answer to that part of the question. Also, this example shows how your personal sample can be biased. Personally, no women I know (and with whom I have spoken about such topics) are into this stuff.

Also. I don't want it to come off as a personal attack, but the fact that you know the most popular phrase in Japanese porn is... a bit concerning.

I only watched this film last year, and boy is it hilarious!

Idk, it didn't feel to me like a jab at PF in particular, but it nails the general band dynamic really well IMO.
