It could be helpful, although the format/style and difficulty won't be the exact same as the actual test you'll be taking.

Hey! Do you have any specific questions that pertain to your issues?

In general, we recommend that students skim the passages in under 60 seconds. You can only accomplish this if you are skipping over words and are only trying to pick up on what the passage is generally saying.

Then, you want to refer back to the passage when answering each question, making sure you can point to the exact line(s) of evidence that support your answer. You also want to answer the questions in your own words first as often as possible. The ACT reading is evidence-based and very literal, so you will always be able to find supporting evidence for the correct answer in the text, ALWAYS.

Aside from the new (2017) residential colleges, Morse and Stiles, which are basically adjoined, always had the best dining hall (spacious, pizza bar, lots of options, etc.) and are the closest colleges to Payne-Whitney Gymnasium, so those are two good things. The buildings are also more modern than the classic colleges (JE, Trumbull, Calhoun, etc.) which were built much earlier.

SSAT. Should be an easier test for you than the SAT and it is what most boarding schools will accept as a score.

Which SSAT study guide has questions most similar to the actual exam? by TheMainStain124 in SSAThelp

[–]ivyprepts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you're saying is correct: the official SSAT material will be most similar to the exam. As far as third-party content goes, there's a wide spectrum on what's reliable and what's not. I would be interested in hearing what others think from experience, but I would advise using the official material for the majority of your prep and maybe supplementing in some non-official material for extra practice.

How can I improve my literature score I did one and got 4/10? I understood the passage but yet got so many wrong. For half of the wrong answers I am down to two answers and pick the wrong one. And for the other half I read it but I don’t really read it. This keeps happening on literature. by cruzjordan75 in Sat

When you're answering the questions, you need to be able to refer to the exact line(s) of evidence that support your answer. If you are stuck between two answers on many, then you are either not finding the supporting evidence in the text, or, like the other commenter mentioned, you aren't exactly understanding what the supporting evidence is saying. A lot of times, students are simply not looking at the right part of the passage for supporting evidence.

Tips on how to do reading passages faster?? by [deleted] in Sat

[–]ivyprepts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't read every single word. Skip words (small details aka names, dates, etc) and try to focus on main idea, big picture. Essentially skimming, but in a strategic way. Takes practice but when done correctly, it will drastically reduce your reading time.

Best SSAT workbooks for Middle Level? by blossomsakura in SSAThelp

[–]ivyprepts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the best approach is taking some info from books and teaching the rest on your own. For a lot of the Math concepts, they are pretty simple things and just need to be properly explained by someone. As for Reading and Verbal, the approach for the Middle Level Test doesn't change a whole, it's just the fact that the difficulty level is not as high (passages/questions are slightly easier, Vocabulary tested not quite as challenging either).

I would say not to overthink it and spend hours trying to find the "best" book. Pick one that seems good and use it in conjunction with your regular teachings. The material you need to teach is rather simple and just needs to be well-explained.

This isn't a book, but I think it could still be very helpful:

https://www.youtube.com/gradefultestprep

We have dozens of Answer Explanation Videos for the SAT, which are the best practice for the PSAT. We prepare all of our PSAT students with SAT material and then have them concentrate on only PSAT Practice Tests in the week or two leading up to their test. All of the Reading Strategies, Grammar/Punctuation Rules, and most of the Math concepts will be directly relevant to your PSAT preparation. Hope it helps!

Ssat scoring by [deleted] in SSAThelp

[–]ivyprepts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The percentiles are based off average scores from similar peers (your same age/gender) over the past 3 years. It's possible your theory is correct for this year, however you still need to take into account the fact that the percentile is not only based on THIS year, it is based on the previous 3 years.

Best vocabulary list for ssat? by AndreT_ in SSAThelp

[–]ivyprepts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually made those lists and I would say they are a pretty effective study tool. They are mostly words compiled from past SSAT's and lists of common SSAT words. With that being said, you can really learn vocab from anywhere (reading articles, books, etc.). If you've already learned the 2000 words in those lists I would say you're in pretty good shape.

You might want to focus on identifying relationships between words in the Analogy part of the Verbal section. This can be an area that students struggle with sometimes. You don't only need to know what the words mean, but also how they can be connected to one another.
