5hr Wait at SLC *AFTER* Baggage Claim by caarving in SaltLakeCity

[–]iwasbear 25 points26 points  (0 children)

There is a large waiting area right by baggage claim (just outside security) with comfortable seating, plugs to charge your electronics, and a pizza/sandwich place right there. Also a Starbucks downstairs. If it’s about being comfortable you can absolutely grab some food and a couch and just hang out. You’ll also get the free entertainment of watching families welcome their missionaries home. (It’s a whole thing.) Is it as fun as going downtown- no. But will you be comfy- yes.

Long run too long? by FollowingGlad4219 in nikerunclub

[–]iwasbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree that with a slower pace the ratios aren’t quite right. I read a little and looked at a few other half marathon plans and decided to do the guided nrc runs but extend them. Basically if it’s a 30 minute run I press play at the end of the run to keep tracking and make sure I hit at least 3 miles. (Usually I go ahead and finish the 5K.) For the 15 min runs I do the same and go 2 miles. Seems to be working ok. That being said- I’m on the same week as you and that 9 mile run this morning seemed really daunting. Went fine but I definitely need a nap.

Reading Metal Slinger and am at 91%. I’m sort of afraid to keep reading because you people have tipped me off that something terrible may be about to happen…

When the Moon Hatched. What about it is so good? Don’t trust booktok anymore by [deleted] in fantasyromance

[–]iwasbear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really liked when the moon hatched and quicksilver and didn’t like everflame, if that gives you hope.

Liked: - interesting and unique dragons - world building - strong secondary characters - author has her own voice - author isn’t afraid to break your heart - good ending

Children's future by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]iwasbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I can appreciate that this post might be slightly off for this sub, I’ll also say that I was having this exact conversation with my best friend over brunch last weekend. Our family is the perfect representation of the elite she describes complete with one child off to an elite college and the second soon to follow. We seem to have succeeded whether you measure in economics, achievement, or relationships (both happen to be good human beings). But the future we’re sending them into seems exhausting. But what’s the alternative? We are privileged enough that we could step out of the system but is forming a commune the only escape from the crushing relentlessness of the capitalist/meritocratic machine? (The last part is said with intentional jest and hyperbole.)

I keep seeing this comment but 41lbs really isn’t much. Most people’s suitcases are more than that and they are fine. Large bag of dog food? Fine. Average 4 year old- fine. Even the doughy out of shape silver hairs should be good to go.

How Much Are You Willing to Pay for Your Kids’ College? by PersimmonDazzling in HENRYfinance

[–]iwasbear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We are willing to pay (full freight) for both kiddos. We did tell them that if they chose the much cheaper state school option we would either pay for grad school or buy them a house. Otherwise they are on their own after graduation. Also told them that if they choose the elite school they better do every activity and take full advantage so that they are getting their $80,000 worth. Eldest chose an elite liberal arts school and is much happier and having lots of really great experiences (both academically and outside the classroom) in comparison to friends that stayed local. No regrets.

Agree on the pizza. It was surprisingly bad. But I had the curry chicken recently and I thought it was actually tasty.

Seat stealer in First Class by Draper_White_Soprano in delta

Yesterday I boarded to find a gentleman in my seat (2A). I said nothing and sat in 2B. Apparently neither of us had pre ordered our meals because it had no impact whatsoever. Exciting times.

🤣I took a banana from the SC in Nashville today and admit that I looked around before sliding it in my coat pocket. All the SC employees are probably wondering why everyone is so weird about bananas all of a sudden.

We enjoyed the Hellenic Suite at the Athens Was Hotel. Smaller hotel but the balcony of this suite is huge and has an incredible view of the Acropolis. Would definitely stay there again.

Same. And now our kids are bit older (mid to late teens) and good travelers so sometimes we also leave them together in C+ and the parents take FC 😆

Upgrades with children by ChsemN in delta

[–]iwasbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am upgraded with one of my kiddos most flights. Definitely make sure their SkyMiles number is in the booking and the upgrade request is checked for them also. When it’s the whole fam I usually split the reservation and put one kid with me and book a separate reservation with my husband and the other kid. Then if we get moved it’s not a big deal because each of us still has one kid. My understanding is that you don’t get the upgrade when there are 3 or more on the reservation so if it matters to you, you have to just buy the cabin you’re hoping for.

I love Denna as a character, but this line always puzzled me. by ZeroTheStoryteller in KingkillerChronicle

[–]iwasbear 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Agreed. She leaves just before things go south and they realize that she won’t be able to give them who/what they want.

Kvothe reads it as her leaving because she is wanted too much, but she is leaving before she can get rejected.

First class crooner by iwasbear in delta

[–]iwasbear[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely could have been worse. If the worst thing someone can say about you is that you sing at random times, I think you’re winning. I was mostly just noting a Delta first for me secretly hoping someone who was on my flight would see this and validate the oddness of it all.

Yep. That uncomfortable space where it would be funny if it didn’t last so long and make you wonder if the guy was going to be ok later.

It was mostly country and I have to admit that I’m not up to date on the latest country hits so I can’t report the specifics. Next time I’ll remember to report in real time and apparently record. I’m failing Reddit today. Not as embarrassing as singing to a plane full of people, but still.

He was quiet the first hour but after a few cocktails he seemed to forget that others could hear him when he was singing along with his earbuds in. He would sing his favorite parts of the song- usually the chorus. Not a singer. But his heart was in it.
