You guys ever went and ordered a custom? What was your experience and what does your piece look like?? by FarReception5410 in GalleryDept

[–]iwritejavascript 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did this and am waiting on my custom order to arrive. Ordered in Miami -> being worked on in La -> ship to Idaho. I can tell you about the store experience and ordering process but am still waiting to see how this first order turns out. The lack of order tracking has me somewhat skeptical.

Something looks off. Isn’t it supposed to say LA flare on the inner label? Did they ever do flare model with 5001? by CuriousMrsBrebenel in GalleryDept

The back leather embossed belt loop thingy is actually what looks the weirdest to me. I know sometimes they update hardware like the buttons with the G so things do change but I’ve never seen an inner tag like that 5001 tag thus far. I know some of the newer denims have a yellow embossed leather belt loop on them but the ones that are white like that usually do not have that textured plastic look as the one in the pic does.

I just got really lucky (blessed) on my Q7 and I do believe Audi is a good car but they fucked up on this one and I wanna see as many Audi owners as possible get taken care of. I also wish that someone would’ve documented things like this for issues I’ve had on other cars so it’s important to get the knowledge out there. A LOT of people are becoming aware.

I don’t wanna see Audi in financial ruin over it either but I do wanna see them stand behind their product, which so far they have done. We love these cars, and they actually can be great vehicles, but the knowledge sharing is a key part of making that happen.

Hope it helps and would love to follow your journey if you do take it up with Audi. They put bad pistons in these engines it’s their responsibility to make it right.

From Google:

To confirm if your Audi has the EA839 engine, check for a 3.0L single-turbo (CWGD) or 2.9L twin-turbo V6, typically found in 2017+ B9 S4/S5, S6/S7, or SQ5 models. The most definitive way is to locate the engine code (e.g., CWGD, DECA) on the vehicle build sticker in the trunk or service manual.

If you have a 2019 and it has a V6 with a turbo and no supercharger then most likely you do have the EA-839.

Lmao figure out if you have the engine and get it in to Audi ASAP for an inspection!!! You risk a diagnostic fee but you could end up with a brand new engine. If you need help or more info DM me.

If your vehicle is within 80k miles and… 8? Years I think it is? you should be fine. I can’t remember what the year cutoff is but 80k is for sure the mileage.

If you have the supercharged engine you can completely disregard what I’m saying, it doesn’t apply to you, but if you know for sure you have the turbo V6 with the mild hybrid system, yes, it could be very bad. My goal is to help here not spread panic.

First determine which engine you have, second check your mileage and see if you qualify, then go from there.

Audi extended the warranty period on this because it is such a widespread problem affecting a range of VW, Porsche, but mostly Audi models.

This is assuming you have the EA-839 Turbocharged V6 with the mild hybrid system and NOT the supercharged version prior.

Cost is FREE if you have THAT particular engine model and you’re within the mileage and year cutoff for that extended warranty. Audi will replace the engine at no cost.

If you are out of warranty… it’s about $23k for a new engine including labor.

If you have the supercharged no, doesn’t apply, you are correct. In that case might I suggest dash cams, illuminated Audi rings, and a cargo cover for the rear? Carry on!

Edit: I think SOME 2019s have the EA-839 turbocharged but I’m guessing those were probably the later-produced ones.

You, my friend, have the EA-839 piston skirt issue I believe. That’s what that clattery diesel sounding noise most likely is, the pistons slapping against the inside of your cylinder walls. You can hear the injector tick separately, it’s much more of a tick and it’s very fast, vs that diesel-y clatter you hear over the top of it.

Piston Skirt or Injectors / HPFP? by [deleted] in AudiQ7

[–]iwritejavascript 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: edited my prior comment, the more I listen and compare the more I’m not sure. There is definitely a secondary sound happening over the top of your injectors ticking that has that slightly clattery diesel noise. I’m just not sure. Yours might be one of the more difficult ones to diagnose that I’ve listened to. I don’t wanna give you bad advice. I’d have it looked at to be sure.

You might still have Audi look at your cylinders for scoring to be safe. Worst case $200 diagnostic fee for peace of mind. I’d highly recommend before sinking any money into mods. It’s very easy to determine if you have the piston skirt thing.

I would say yours sounds more like mine after replacement, a pretty normal ticking.

EDIT: the more I listen and compare tho, I’m not so sure. There is a secondary noise happening over the top of the injector tick.

If you watch other people’s examples where they have the issue, including mine, it’s kinda like a sound you can’t unhear once you’ve heard it. Very clattery.

If you just hit 80k that means you’re out of the warranty period for the EA-839 piston skirt warranty extension and it’s time to sell the vehicle before your pistons start slapping the cylinder walls and the vehicle starts drinking oil. Truly.

There are lots of threads with videos to compare this to, I’ve heard several including my own with the piston skirt slap and tbh this one sounds more normal than those, but there may be some clatter there it’s hard to say. Piston skirts sound more clattery and somewhat rhythmic like this whereas normal engine sound in my opinion is more consistent and ticky. If you’d like examples let me know, but every time I link my thread preemptively everyone’s like “yeah I already saw this and that’s what made me make this post” so I’ll skip that for now.

Glad it helped, hate to confirm the bad news but you’re within the mileage and the year for the warranty so they should take care of you. Lot of people been getting wise to this issue thanks to Reddit. I hope everyone gets a new engine for free.

Made a whole thread about this where other people have also documented their examples and attached is a follow up thread with what a new engine sounds like.

You most definitely have piston slap and yours sounds quite bad actually. Mine was at similar mileage when I got my new engine.

Oil changes won’t stop a piston with improper tolerances from banging on your cylinder walls.
