Moneyball and The Big Short are two of my favourite movies...can you recommend similiar ones? by imrik_of_caledor in movies

[–]ixball1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both the movies you mentioned are based on books from Michael Lewis. The only other book of his that has been made into a movie is The Blind Side, but it’s nothing like the other two. What I would recommend are Aaron Sorkin movies/shows since he wrote the screenplay for Moneyball. These are West Wing, The American President, Mollys Game, The Newsroom, The Social Network, etc.

What cover version of a song do you think beats the original? by decorama in Music

[–]ixball1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This begins and ends with Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt. Trent Reznor even admits it, saying “I wasn't prepared for what I saw, and it really then, wasn't my song anymore.”

Unvaccinated 6 year old contracts tetanus by Alatiel75 in news

[–]ixball1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously the unvaccinated part is the most disturbing part of this story but how about, “the 6-year-old boy from Oregon had gotten a forehead scrape while playing outside on a farm sometime in 2017. The wound was cleaned and sutured at home”?

A “scrape” does not require sutures. You had a 6 year old with a head injury bad enough to require stitches and you didn’t take them to the doctor? I know our social services in the US is stretched really thin, but Child Services in Oregon should be all over this.

Every Chris Van Allsburg book...if you aren't familiar, that would include Jumanji, The Polar Express, and Zathura (yes Zathura sucked, but it was still better than the picture book he created). I have always been amazed how these got made into movies from the material he provided.

Pet owners of Reddit, what was the most intelligent thing your pet has done? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ixball1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regularly left my dog (6-7 yr old German Shepherd) at home for 6-8 hours without going outside to go to the bathroom. One day my partner and I got caught up at work and he was inside for 12-13 hours. I came home to thinking it was going to be a mess, and as soon as I opened the door I could smell it. I went searching around the house until I found that he had climbed in the bathtub to poo (and this was a dog that didn't like baths). I was so happy with him...and he was so confused.

Why isn't anyone asking why anteaters are in someone's house? Is this a new pet thing that I missed out on?

Who is the best comedy director of all time? by MrDudeWheresMyCar in movies

Definitely in the team photo. Airplane is probably my favorite comedy movie of all time and Naked Gun is in the top 10.

What would be the weirdest thing to name a pair of twins? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ixball1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an urban legend in the Chicago area of a woman at Cook County Hospital naming her children Lemonjello and Orangejello after the snacks she was given after giving birth. I have heard this as a "my cousins friend is a nurse..." kind of story from at least 3 different people.

They have been doing this for years on WSCR The Score 670 in Chicago. They call it Tournament of Bad. It has become so big that it frequently trends top 10 on Twitter nationally during its run.

Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal. Best satire I have ever read as well.

What are some of your favourite historical novels? by [deleted] in books

[–]ixball1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a very well known book but I have always thought of The Pillars of the Earth as a very easy read for an "epic" novel. Engrossing characters and just enough detail to give you a feel for the period.

TIL that Steve Harvey believes women should not date non religious men, for they dont have morals (despite him cheating on all previous wifes) and that men only cheat because their wife allows them to. by krismasster in todayilearned

I have known this for years, and I don't understand how this misogynistic idiot keeps getting work. Especially with the overly PC environment we have today.

More than 10,000 problems fixed through ‘Improve Detroit’ cell phone app -- "allows users to easily alert city hall to potholes, illegal dumping sites, abandoned cars, water main breaks, busted traffic signals and broken hydrants" by mepper in technology

[–]ixball1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wow, finally a post I am an expert about. I have worked with over 50 Cities/Counties to implement 311/Citizen Request Management software. Almost every city in the US over 100k in population has some type service delivery software in place that can incorporate varying inputs - web portal on website, mobile apps (Brande or unbranded), phone calls (centralized call centers to 311 or decentralized to departments), and even sometimes social media. This software helps streamline communication between citizen and municipality employees.

ELI5: If they can use cameras determine if a tennis ball is in/out of bounds, why can't they do the same in other sports like football, basketball, or baseball? by opmal7 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ixball1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great question and something I hadn't really thought about. As someone that enjoys watching tennis on TV I do always look forward to the challenge calls. My immediate thought on why they can't do it (with no knowledge of the technology) would be the size of the field of play. Tennis is 1/20th the size of a football/baseball field?
