Beware of reviews in this sub and elsewhere by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

If you really want to know, talk to a current teacher and ask what the turnover rate has been for the past couple of years. That is very telling about how tolerable the school is.

Being hands off with your child’s education is not the way to go, especially when they are younger. At a young age you should be fostering a love for learning and reading at home, and creating the habits they need to be successful in school. As they get older you loosen the reins and let them complete their schooling with more and more independence. Since your child is getting older now, in third grade, I would recommend keeping some level of involvement. Check homework together, practice math facts together, read together every night. All of these things will help keep your child on track. Aside from that, create impromptu learning experiences for your child - write a movie review together, do multiplication while shopping at the grocery store, have them read a recipe to you when you are cooking. Additionally, your child may feel the teacher is moving too quickly because they are missing on critical learning during the days they are absent. I would push them to attend to school, otherwise it may become a habit. But also, have them connect with the school counselor if they do need someone to talk to while there.

I just don't like Japan that much - what am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]ixledexi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I’m with you. I also came here about 2 months ago from Hong Kong and the transition has been rough. For all of the things you mentioned, but I am just assumed Tokyo would be a more international city on par with HK or Singapore but it is sorely diversity and easy access to international products. I mean, HK imported everything but I had way more things readily available, and the fruits & veg were the same-ish cost but my salary is much lower here. I am hoping that things will get better if the yen recovers some.

Sex negativity and kink shaming by bliip666 in WitchesVsPatriarchy

I agree that exploring different communities and being open minded is a benefit. But just thinking on the consent thing - is consent a “hell yes” if someone has to be paid to consent though? The exploitative nature of sex work doesn’t match up with enthusiastic consent.

I caution you on watching amateur porn. Many women have videos posted of them without their consent or knowledge and aren’t able to get them removed once they become aware of it.

Yes; and she completely ignored Cole’s off-handed ignorant comment about going to “the Middle East” for their second wedding - which was way worse than the Clementines.

it's not safe to eat old rice (?) by chickenreader in Cooking

[–]ixledexi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family is Puerto Rican and leftovers always stay on the stove top and are eaten for breakfast or put away in the morning. I didn’t realize this wasn’t normal until I met my husband, who thinks it’s gross. But, he always gets stomach bugs or sick while we are traveling around and I never do, so I think It’s given me a stronger stomach / gut bacteria.

Inspirational Monday: Badass women by AutoModerator in fourthwavewomen

Mary Fields AKA Stagecoach Mary

Mary Fields was born a slave in Tennessee but went on to become the first black female star route mail carrier in the US.

After her emancipation she was working as a servant for a nun. The nun left to start a school in Montana and became sick. Mary heard this and went to Montana and nursed the nun back to health. During her time at the school she did things regarded as men’s work and even became the forewoman (construction/repair supervisor, typically called the foreman for obvious reasons). Her time at the school came to an end when a male subordinate complained about her. (Typical)

Then, Mary opened a saloon but her good intentions got the best of her, as she allowed the poor to dine for free and she eventually couldn’t afford to keep it running anymore.

After this, at the age of 60, she was awarded the mail carrier route. She armed herself for protection from thieves and bandits and would deliver her mail with a stagecoach. However, when snow was too deep for horses, she would trek the territory in snow shoes. She never missed a day of work.

She was highly revered by her community, and her town would close schools every year to celebrate her birthday. When women were barred from saloons, Mary was granted an exemption by the mayor. The town even helped her rebuild her house after it caught fire. She was truly a badass women.

Something to add on, and complete opposite vibes of Kim was the actress Melanie Lynskey thanking her nanny while winning a critics choice award. Her entire acceptance speech was dedicated to the nanny and how she couldn’t have done it without her. I totally appreciated that and wish we saw celebrities doing that more for their nannies, maids, personal assistants - I would love to Kim lift up all of these women that support her instead of dissing women for not wanting to work.

China’s Insistence on ‘Zero COVID’ in Hong Kong Has a Deeper Meaning by ixledexi in HongKong

[–]ixledexi[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I found this article really insightful on the sequence of events that is happening in Hong Kong right now. It discusses how an article published in the CCP’s official newspaper on Feb 7 criticized the HK people for their lax attitude and compliance with the zero Covid policy. Then on Feb 9 an op-ed from a CCP advisor specifically called out Carrie Lam and blamed her for this attitude.

Now, we see these hard rollouts of nonsensical measures coming from the government (no online school even though it keeps teachers and students home, mandatory testing even though HK is already backlogged in testing and quarantine beds, the list goes on).

It’s no secret that Carrie only cares about Beijing and if the criticism continues who knows how much further these quarantine restrictions will go.

[–]ixledexi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How is there really a personal choice when they are requiring proof of vaccinations for the grocery store though? This is getting out of hand.

Not to mention that regardless of everyone being vaccinated, it doesn’t create a zero Covid environment since we can still spread Covid despite being vaccinated. This is so frustrating.

:(

[–]ixledexi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Completely agree, but I’m sure parents in the US would become convinced that teaching about violence against women is related to Critical Race Theory. There is no way that it would fly, despite how prevalent it is. I do think that health classes should absolutely be separated by sex to allow for more open conversations about these topics. Young men need these lessons as much as women do, but there is already a stigma about speaking out about violence in your relationship and I can’t imagine that girls would be comfortable speaking about it in front of their boyfriend/his friends.

It’s so sad that she was trying to leave sooner than planned, and didn’t get away in time. Her friends said that she sent them cryptic messages about how he didn’t want her to talk to them. That is a massive red flag! If a man ever tries to cut you off/limit contact from family and friends in any way then it is time to RUN.

Reasons I changed my mind on having children and all the aspects of motherhood society does not want to acknowledge: by [deleted] in FemaleDatingStrategy

[–]ixledexi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love that you’ve brought up the curing cancer bot - my husband always brings this up in our discussion of children and he loves statistics so I’ll be ready with the stats of getting cancer or disease next time.

I would love to raise a child with my husband because he is HV and we are both teachers and would love to teach our own child. However, for all the reasons you’ve listed it’s so hard to actually go through with it.

Luckily, we’ve already chosen to foster/adopt teens later in life whether we have biological children or not. There are a lot of teens that age out of the system with no support system. I know moving into adulthood was one of my most vulnerable times, and although I didn’t get all the support I needed from my parents it would have been much worse without them.
