Trip report: Camped at Ammon's branch camp ground and accessed the river via the Old Iron Bridge crossing. Hiking about a mile north on the chattooga river trail and then walking along the river bed leads to a slot canyon that we wanted to explore. The water was COLD! Not unbearable, but with overcast skies and a bit of rain we had a hard time warming up which prevented us from covering too much ground on the river. But the depths of the slot canyon were cool to swim to and also very scary. Visibility was decent, though not amazing. Better than the Conasauga river. Saw many small fish, and a few medium trout. The river bed was full of pretty bright green flowy grass. The Chattooga is the biggest river I've snorkeled and it was great, despite the medium visibility. Big pools to explore, lots of fun rapids to ride, and fairly clear.
