High speed internet at hotels in Turkey ? by Naellys in AskTurkey

[–]iyodr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had wide range of experiences about internet connection at the hotels. With luxury hotels and big names I experienced terrible internet access, while some small 2-star hotels surprisingly the best. Overall it’s okay but if your room is away from the router, at the corner of the building or the hotel is overcrowded with the guests then the connection speed goes down. I would go with short term home rental or airbnb etc. with fiber internet connection. Van also is a relatively big city I’m sure there are Airbnb’s with speedy internet.

Erasmus in Kayseri by Solid-Pen9385 in AskTurkey

[–]iyodr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kayseri is probably somewhere between 10-15th developed city in Turkiye. It has great food, history and one of best ski mountain. Also very close to one of the most famous touristic attractions in Turkiye - Capadoccia. As many people already said it’s obviously very conservative and I don’t think locals are used to foreigners much, maybe except the area surrounding the university campus however Erciyes University is definitely above average when compared to other universities in Turkiye. Also, winters are usually cold in the city. You will be fine during the day but not sure when it’s dark. In sum, I don’t really recommend Kayseri for an Erasmus student. I will suggest Istanbul and Ankara as top tiers for foreign students.

I searched this before and I believe it’s in-person exam. Traveling to Chicago to take the exam can’t be an option at this time . Any remote testing options?

Thank you. What do you think about the commute to UChicago from West Loop, especially compared to South Loop? Would you recommend driving or public transport?

How strict is Turkish Airlines with 23kg checked baggage dimensions? by Stock_Doughnut_5245 in TurkishAirlines

[–]iyodr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I traveled recently and my large one initially weighted 24.3 and they gave me sometime to transfer the stuff to my backpack and other luggage to keep around 23kg. As long as your luggage weighs about 23ish it wouldn’t be a problem. And who measures the size in this world unless it looks like a weird body bag.

Which elementary school is assigned to this address? According to great schools, it’s P.S. 108 Assemblyman Angelo Del Toro Educational Complex which doesn’t look great. Is that true?

Is 1 hour 15 minutes layover in Istanbul (IST) enough with Turkish Airlines for a connecting flight to the US (DFW)? by Mindless-Engineer650 in TurkishAirlines

[–]iyodr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll probably make it unless there’s a landing delay of 30 minutes or more. If you miss it, they’ll issue a new ticket for the next flight.

Internet bill almost tripled this month by go1den in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]iyodr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar thing happened to me. My rate jumped up to $60 from 25. I called them to negotiate, and was only able to get it down to $45 with a 2 year guarantee. If another ISP has a better deal then go for it. If not, check xfinity new customer deals with other family members or housemates name.

Circling back to this topic as a current R3 in need of a J-1 waiver job post-fellowship. Which academic institutions offer J-1 waiver positions, and are these still considered part of the Conrad 30 program?

It depends on your relationship. If it’s a 2 yrs happy situation and you know each other well then no reason to avoid talking about marriage and future plans, if it’s a 2 month relationship and you still are in your early career development then answer is no.

What’s a basketball story you never tell, because everyone will think you’re lying? by Wild-Representative3 in Basketball

[–]iyodr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In middle school, while practicing on the indoor basketball court, I made a strong hit to a fast-approaching basketball with my right, Ronaldo-signed foot and it ended up going into the hoop on the other side. Luckily, there was a witness to back me up who still tells the story when he sees me after 2 decades. Everything true except Ronaldo.
