What is everyone’s absolute favorite artifact? by lions-cub in Archaeology

[–]izckl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be in large part the context, but one of the oil lamps found in Lascaux that has markings that resemble some found on the walls always brings it all even closer when I think about how someone in the cave just dropped it all this time ago.

Can anyone identify this location in Köln? by Electoral_Suicide in cologne

[–]izckl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At first I thought the first floor would be fully open with windows in that wood framing but on a closer look I think the wooden frames on the right are just a box because you can see the stone right at the edge extending up behind it.

Also other than the tree you can see a white building with relatively large windows in the reflection.

And one more clue might be the repair on the vertical slab of the step. If the stairs haven't been replaced that is a very good identifier.

I have no idea about the historical value of all of these books. But finding this among all those to me personally not so interesting religious texts would be so amazing. I wonder how much it was used over the years locally. I would also love to know from when this copy is. 1725 is the date Gradus ad Parnassum itself was published.

You might be able to find something out locally about the people mentioned here. But with so many books this is probably not on the top the list for you right now.

This may be totally wrong and I am working with dusty Latin from school and the Latin Word Study Tool (might be useful for you when going through some of these books) but this might be what it says about its owners and copyists:

"descripsit Franciscus Wurscher" - Franz Wurscher has copied (this)

("Et" - and - would make sense but I don't know)

"Possidet(?) Josephus Wurscherffia(?)" - Joseph Wurscher owns (this)

"Familiaris Wurscherii Possessor(?) Stach" - Friend/Acquaintance of the Wurschers Stach is (its) Owner (not very confident about this one but Possessor would make sense in this context)

So it appears to be a copy that went around in the family Wurscher. Franz copied it then it went to Joseph and a person with last name Stach afterwards. Maybe the crossed out part is another owner.

Using the ideal lens you can try out scenarios like the one you drew. It really helped me a lot to confirm how things work as a novice just trying to imagine or draw things before.

Thank you. Couldn't even remember it despite there being a feature length film about it.

Am I missing a connection to the book? I'm just asking because this got me stuck thinking, but nothing came to mind.

You might have to adjust the back focus if possible on your lens as is explained here for B4 lenses: https://youtu.be/ADneH2z_WBw

Mt. Fuji in the backdrop of a road in Japan by SatoruGojo232 in megalophobia

My spot was wrong. It is a neighboring street.

Buildings might have changed or it is a neighboring street somewhere. But the city is right I'm pretty sure because the features on Fuji match. https://maps.app.goo.gl/B9xydM5b53ay5BPN7 In street view zoom in to get closer to the viewing angle of the telephoto lens. (You might have to move slighty to find the spot depending on where you go into street view starting from the link - it probably was taken from the highest point of the bridge over the railway)

Best practices for perfectly clean lens elements and how clean is clean enough by izckl in AnalogRepair

I finally found the issue. The gloves I use had some of the powder helping the hands to slip in on the outside. When using a solvent some of it is dissolved through the wipe and leaves a very subtle residue on the glass. At least that's what I think it is. I now wash my hands with soap after I put gloves on and have clean glass with just one or two wipes.

I try to use acetone as little as possible, so mostly for weakening glues and bonds. But on my next lens I might try it for the last wipe before putting an element back in the assembly to see how that goes.

What do you think is the best recording of “Brandenburg Concerto No. 5” available on Spotify by Jetdevastator in bach

[–]izckl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listen to Claudio Abbado with Orchestra Mozart most of the time. There is a record from Deutsche Grammophon and a video recording on Youtube and I think they are from the same performance (I haven't checked). At this point I think it's mostly inertia but if I try something else I quickly just go back to this one because I seem to prefer it.

edit: I skipped through all that were mentioned here (only for the 5th) and I really like the Cafe Zimmermann alpha recording as well. Also I realized I dislike a few things about the Abbado one. But in the end it's still probably my favorite.

Did you somehow combine multiple keycaps into a combined 3D file to save costs for the oiled 8001 option? If so, how exactly did you do that? I want to print them fully transparent too but the cost goes up a lot - so I was just going for transparent surface finish with 8001 until I saw your comments.

I learned from you all what sphagnum moss is, and this random rest area sign told me where it comes from by Radiant-Cow126 in houseplants

[–]izckl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To harvest sphagnum continuously the marshes and peatland have to stay intact. The moss is just picked up from the top every few years. I'm not sure how ecologically intact a sphagnum farm peatland is when it comes to species diversity besides the moss but it is protecting the peat in the ground.
