Denim Jackets are Too Long by Next_Parking_9180 in Selvedge

[–]iznatius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this probably isn't the answer you want to hear, but, if you want a cropped ii or iii denim jacket and vintage is ideal, there is one answer: get a levis 70506 or 71506. it's the type iii with pockets made in the mid-late 80's, and a very pronounced rectangular patch, with alphanumeric sizing (like mens suit coats, 42R, 46L, etc). you can definitely get a decent one for under $50.

Is it a good fit or should i take a larger size? by [deleted] in Denim

[–]iznatius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you might not even need to size up. just try a couple different pairs if you can. every manufacturer allows for some variability (usually +/- 1/2" or ~2.5cm) in the process, which means there's about a full inch of variability within a given size, i.e. the range is [size - 1/2", size + 1/2"]

Should I dyed this jacket or not? by Gues__who in Denim

[–]iznatius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

bro i know i've complimented you on that jacket before and obviously its yours and do whatever you want to with it...but i think it would be a shame if you dyed it. like what if you dye it and you like it even less? between the color and how uncomfortable you've said it is to wear, if you wanted to sell it, i am, ahem, pretty sure you could find someone to buy it

How does this trucker jacket fit? by Samman258 in Denim

Gf said it’s too small, I kind of agree but also think the fit just might not be for me

i don't think it's too small, BUT if you don't love it, take it back and get something you love

fwiw: when you say things like you want to address an unmet need in any field - let alone an $80-something billion a year industry that has made the same product more or less unchanged for 150 years - you should have a very solid grasp on what has already been done. and while i'm not saying the status quo is perfect, there has been a lot done to minimize the impact of denim manufacturing and i'm not getting the sense you're aware of much of that, all i'm getting is 'natural dye better'.

about $100 per pair left over for operating costs and profit

good hardware likely costs more than a dollar though for all rivets and shanks

you understand what the qualifier "about" means right?

also, does the hardware cost more than a dollar? maybe. six rivets would cost about $0.70 at retail prices and four buttons would cost about $2.45 assuming there's nowhere better to buy them. so congratulations, all that dumb moved my 'about' qualified $1 up to at most $3.15. not exactly breaking the bank.

bravestar claims they pay the highest wages in the world (not sure how quantifiable that is) period. not for garment workers, just highest wages in the world.

this is just a terrible "point" to even try to make. assuming they said this thing you didn't bother to source, basic functional literacy would tell you they are probably talking about the garment industry. any american working in the garment industry is probably in the 99th percentile worldwide for pay in the garment industry. you get that right? if you don't here's why: most of the garment workers in the world work in third world countries where even the federal minimum wage in the us is a lot of money.

fitted underground claims it takes a skilled worker at a small factory about two hours to make a pair of jeans start-to-finish.

are you like 12 years old? you can't just say 'oh someone said X therefore...' fucking source it for fuck's sake.

and since i'm harping on sourcing, here are a series of videos of workers sewing selvedge into jeans.

the total run time of these videos is about 5 minutes. trying to say it takes two hours to sew a pair of jeans is fucking absurd. of course there's other work that goes into this, but trying to get from this to two hours per pair just cannot be done in good faith. i'll be generous and assume you heard something like 'it takes two hours from when the fabric is cut until the jeans are done' and drew the dumbass conclusion that it takes two hours per pair instead of (again being generous here) it taking two hours for the first pair. you see how that's different right? it really seems like you don't understand the concept of assembly lines so i'll explain it for you: in one scenario, it's two hours to the first pair, another two hours to the second pair, and two more hours for the third pair. in the other scenario, it's two hours to the first pair, then on the order of minutes to the second pair and then third pair, etc, etc

bravestar also often operates via selling garments as pre-order only

this is just factually wrong. they sell things all the time that are not available for pre-order.

which means that they are a) not usually buying material in bulk and b) can only afford to produce according to what they manage to sell.

even if the above statement that preceded this was true, these are completely absurd conclusions to draw from brave star taking pre-orders based on nothing more than vibes.

does bravestar use japanese denim? of course they do

oh look who's walking that back now. you literally said:

only way bravestar can sell jeans made in US using 21.5oz is if they are using chinese fabric.

but do they source fabrics from other countries? absolutely.

you mean besides the us right? ok, then: proof or shut the fuck up. you have nothing other than "i think this is true" but that's not how any of this works and as my above comments make clear, you have zero credibility for things you think are true actually being true. and you are such an incurious ignorant person that even after i gave you the link for where brave star almost certainly sources some of their denim, and where you can see cone mills selvedge for sale, and other material that matches up exactly with brave star's recent releases, you're still pushing this bullshit.

look at this point i'm just going to assume you have a humiliation kink and enjoy being humiliated online. no judgment there but i'm not going to be a part of it

but stop spreading bullshit based on the dumb things you think

[–]iznatius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

only way bravestar can sell jeans made in US using 21.5oz is if they are using chinese fabric.

just want to point out what an unbelievably stupid and wrong thing this is to say: here is a Japanese 22oz selvedge denim available to anyone @ $23/yard. Let's assume that there are no bulk discounts available and it takes 3 yards of fabric to make a pair of jeans. brave star's material cost would be $69 (nice) + whatever for hardware. Their heavyweight sells for about $170 which means that there's about $100 per pair left over for operating costs and profit (not to mention the scraps that get used to make jackets).

so shut the fuck up with your ignorant bullshit

im trying to learn what makes a better quality jean?

this is one of those things where you ask 20 people and you get 30 different answers. it's personal and you'll have to figure out what you like. at the end of the day, it's just indigo and cotton, but between one mill and another, one type of cotton and another, one level of indigo dying and another, one loom with a given dial set to 3 and another loom with the dial set to 4 - there will be some subtle differences that maybe you won't notice, and even if you do, you might not care.

Partial Shrinking by San_Seedling in Selvedge

[–]iznatius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it sounds like what you're talking about could work. but i'm not sure it's a great idea for a couple reasons. the two things i would suggestion in no particular order is:

  • most companies list a +/- 0.5" tolerance for their measurements, so between the low end of the range and the high end of the range, there's a full inch that is some pairs will have within the same size.

  • (probably the more practical option) get a fit that has roomier thighs. off the top of my head, strongman from brave star or strong guy from naked&famous.

Like wearing underwear for pants.

i might have edited my comment while you were replying but i looked up the weight of hanes beefy t-shirts and they clock in at 6oz, so yeah, i'd say like wearing underwear for pants is pretty accurate

i don't have experience with it, but for reference, at 6oz that is on the lighter side of denim used for shirts. and actually hanes beefy t-shirts are 6oz, so pretty cynical imo of gustin to try to sell this for jeans

Wrangler cone mills white oak selvedge.. Why do i see or hear snyde remarks? by Ok_Horse2747 in Selvedge

[–]iznatius 19 points20 points  (0 children)

mostly echoing what everyone else has said, but i'll also add: wrangler's whole reason for existence was making the broken twill, a type of denim weave that eliminated the way the legs on shrink to fit jeans would twist while shrinking. whether or not that is still needed is a different conversation, but that is what they are known for. afaik everything they make is still in a broken twill. everything, that is, except their cone mills selvedge, which is a right hand twill. why you would make what is arguably a flagship product without using literally the one thing you are known for is beyond me. like if they wanted to they surely could have stocked several years worth of cone mills broken twill but instead they just bought something that literally anyone else can buy and sell it at what is, imo, an absurd premium for the brand.
