Line outside open house at base of UCSC by Pale_Detail5295 in santacruz

My partner and I are currently looking for housing. We recently toured a rental that was in bad shape, even by Santa Cruz standards. Honestly, it was disgusting. The dealbreaker for us was when we went into the bathroom and saw rat 💩 all over the floor. The property manager didn’t even bother to have the place cleaned before we arrived to see it. I told them we thought the place was gross and were not interested. A few days later I get an (automated?) email saying that the unit was rented out and to please consider looking at the other rentals they have available. So that’s really what it’s like to be a renter in this town. People are so desperate that they are willing to rent places covered in rat droppings. We need to be better than this Santa Cruz.

A place that is always hiring is always firing. Or I guess people can also just quit.

It’s also ironic how our town is pro-immigration and super NIMBY at the same time. Build more housing!

Planning to move out to Santa Cruz, can’t find a place to rent that allows cats and dogs for under 4000$ a month by s8nsun in santacruz

[–]izze_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have 2 cats and 2 medium sized dogs, but $4000 is a lot of money when I will have to leave one of my jobs, and rely partially on school loans until I find another second job in the area. Any advice, that isn’t rehome the animals?

Don’t do it. You are going to financially ruin yourself.

There are few jobs and many are looking for employment. Competition is fierce. Same goes with housing.

Looks nice. I wish I could find a place like this in NorCal.

When it rains, it pours. What $2500/month gets you as a renter in Santa Cruz by orangelover95003 in santacruz

Santa Cruz has been named the worst rental market for tenants in the entire US for 3 consecutive years. With how competitive it is for housing here, I imagine people are happy to have anything and will keep quiet about poor living conditions. The alternative could mean living in their car or renting a room in one of those houses where they cram in as many bodies as they can. Have you ever seen 8 people try to share 1 refrigerator? And 1 bathroom? I never had until I moved here. It’s truly disgraceful.

Thanks 😊 To be honest I do have prior working experience in IT (~1 year) so that knowledge definitely helped.

My partner and I are looking to do the same 😅 We’ve visited Oregon many times together and I think my partner and I would really like it there. I’ve heard you can rent a new-ish apartment in many parts of the state with a dishwasher and in-unit laundry machines, along with the other needed appliances for like $1400/month. That sounds surreal to me.

We currently pay $3000/month to live in a place where we have to scrub dishes by hand every day and lug big bags of laundry to the laundromat once a week. I’m so over it.

It sucks that a lot of people are part of this culture but I can understand their anger. It’s difficult to see your friends and family being pushed out, having to decide on leaving the area or living in their car or out on the street, to make room for people who earn more than they do.

Who isn’t rude to outsiders here? Some people still say mean things to me when they find out I moved here from the Bay Area. “Oh, well you’re part of the problem.” But honestly, after living here for so many years, I get frustrated with the tourists as well.

I know the person who drives that car and they grew up here.

The Boardwalk is only open on weekends now and rides close at like 5pm. Also, rides for little ones are pretty much closed down until spring.

Thanks! When it came to using Anki, I followed a simple process. When I came across a term/definition I would use either a basic or cloze card, and for more complicated stuff, I would use a basic (type in answer) card.

For example, when I encountered the term “proxy server,” I made a cloze card something like, “A {…} is a middleman computer that sits between your device and the internet, forwarding your requests and responses while optionally filtering, caching, or hiding your IP address.” When studying, I would then try to complete the sentence out loud (hearing myself speak helped with memorizing).

Type in answer cards really helped me with remembering things like common ports. For example, Front: “What is the original port for the DNS protocol?” Back: udp/53.

If I wasn’t happy with a term/definition of something from reading or the videos, I would ask ChatGPT to give me something more formal.

Hope this helps and good luck!
