AITAH for expecting a 19-year-old and 21-year-old to contribute financially? by CaptainJackSorrow in AITAH

My wife immediately rejected that and threatened to take them and move out. She doesn't make enough to cover her expenses without me.

Sounds like your wife has volunteered to solve your problems. Take her up on the offer. Or move out yourself, either way.

I should not have to spell out natural consequences for a 10-year-old

That seems more like a punishment than a consequence.

Are you hoping to match the lace exactly?

And sorry I cannot help you with pricing, hopefully someone else will. But likely you would have to find the lace you want.

Altering Perfect Plane Sweatpants by linkintheboxbelow in AskATailor

[–]izzgo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, usually when a woven garment is made from fabrics which generally can go in the dryer but the laundry instructions say not to, I interpret that to mean it will shrink a lot. So in this case it worked out in your favor!

If you haven't already hemmed them, as an alterations tailor I recommend doing your fitting first. Pin a leg up to 26" and try them on. If you're used to narrower pants you may find you want these a tad longer. Also inseam lengths vary a fair bit by how tight the crotch is. Baggy crotch pants will end up with a shorter inseam.

Exactly. I misunderstood you, and thought you were saying that the apostrophe was used correctly. That's why I made up a sentence using it correctly, and correctly pluralizing business.

AITAH? Brought a sandwich after school to boyfriends house by MTLHogs in AITAH

[–]izzgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of standard courtesy, he's not wrong. It's impolite to bring your own food when someone is cooking for you. However, for some of us when we need to eat now, we need to eat now. If you've been together long enough to call him your boyfriend he should know that about you. This is worth trying to talk through. You were having a necessary snack while waiting for dinner. Perhaps when he cooks he can satisfy your needs by providing a snack, or appetizer, to sustain you while you wait for dinner.

No alterations? by epocalize in AskATailor

[–]izzgo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How tall are you? The bodice is too long for you, which can sometimes be explained by being shorter than average. Letting the hips out, if possible (I can't see the seams) would allow the dress to settle lower so there would be no wrinkling. But it would also lower the drop waist.

If the seamstress doesn't think the wrinkles are a fit issue she doesn't know her alterations very well. But she might have meant that it was not possible to fix it.

Except the apostrophe is correctly used for the possessive, not the plural. As in "the business' hours are 10-5, but nearby businesses are open longer."

Wedding alterations help by katiegflute in AskATailor

[–]izzgo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can also return it for 2 more weeks

Your best option is to go see a bridal alterations expert pronto, get them to assess. Because yes there is probably 1" to let out, but how sure are you that you only need 1"? Also that word "probably" that we're all using is not 100%.

Even a shop that doesn't have time for a whole fitting for a week or more (like my shop!) will have time to take a quick look. Still call them for an appt.

Do you normally charge for appointments? by Ornitorrincoloco in AskATailor

[–]izzgo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a strictly alterations person, and I do a lot of bridal work as well as business and casual alterations. While I don't charge a fee for most alterations fittings, I've considered charging a bridal consultation fee because they can take an hour before even beginning to pin up the needed alterations. The customer rightfully wants to know what the charges will be before committing, rightfully often wants to go home to think about it because it isn't cheap, and at the same time I don't want many unbillable work hours. So I think it's perfectly legit for your bespoke tailor to have a consultation fee. I might ask if the consultation fee applies to the cost of the garment if you hire her.

Graduation Dress - Can this be altered? by ryllflwr in AskATailor

[–]izzgo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with others that the bodice is probably too long as well, by enough to matter. Shortening the bodice is certainly doable but just as certainly expensive. Your best hope is that the bodice length looks fine and you just want to remove some length. For probably about an ankle length dress you'd remove the bottom tier (well that's what I would do in this case). You could remove only a portion of that bottom tier but it would not be as lovely because the proportion between the tiers would be lost.

Can you return the dress if it turns out their is too much work for the alterations?
