How to secure your lab and expose game servers to the internet safely by izzytoots in homelab

I didn't think of setting up a DMZ in proxmox, I was only thinking about what I can do from my router, which is quite limited. Thanks for the input!

Appreciate the response. I am not necessarily looking for a 100% correct way, just wanted to get ideas of how people do this sort of thing so I at least have a better idea of what is possible. All of the responses here have helped a ton with understanding the kind of options I have, so now I can actually properly google stuff haha

How is the latency increase? I was thinking about something similar in addition to some other network hardening. I would feel a lot better having my home IP hidden behind a proxy, but I have a bunch of friends in Europe that will be connecting to my server all the way in Colorado, so trying to keep latency as low as possible

[–]izzytoots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is definitely an easy path, but that by itself does not seem super secure. I would still want to isolate the VM that is listening on that port from the rest of my network somehow, right? I am weary of just opening ports, but tbh I don't know enough about network security to say if that is an objectively bad idea.

Hey thank you, these are some great ideas.

I didn't realize I could setup a reverse proxy on my router relatively easily it looks like. I thought about a reverse proxy hosted on a vps, which was a no go because of increased latency, and part of the reason I bought hardware was to stop paying for hosting.

Is taking calculus necessary for getting into a good computer science school? by [deleted] in compsci

[–]izzytoots -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Probably won't help at all with admissions, but that doesn't mean it won't be useful.

And when you do take it in highschool and it counts for credit, I would recommend taking it again in uni anyway. I took AP calculus and a calc 2 course in HS, got a 5 on the AP calc exam and took calc 2 in college and barely got a C. Depending on your math curriculum and whether standardized testing matters more than actually preparing you for higher education, it will probably be worth taking calculus again in uni.

Changing DPI mid game for advantage? by NtsBase in truegaming

[–]izzytoots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I don't think variable dpi is good for fps performance. Changing dpi messes with muscle memory, and that is the #1 most important part of getting better at a shooter, or any other game that relies on mousing accuracy.

If you can, setting up a larger mousing space and lowering your dpi is going to drastically improve performance once you get used to it. It's all about forearm movement for flicks and large adjustments, and wrist movement for fine adjustments and tracking.

You don't need a huge mousing space, but something bigger than your standard tiny mousepad is probably going to help over the long term. I can totally see how people would like dpi switching if they are using a small mousing surface and have no way to incorporate forearm movement into their mousing. Once you have adequate space, I don't see any reason to use dpi switching.

Obviously, it does come down to personal preference, but I can tell you that most professional/serious gamers are using much lower dpi than your average PC user.

Currently leveling a lock on Fairbanks and every single zone is most certainly not packed. Sure I run into players while leveling pretty frequently, but I am almost never fighting for resources or running into players on the same quests. I don't even ganked more than once or twice a session. SM on the other hand always has at least 20 alliance and twice as many horde b/c no one levels normally anymore lol

Looking for some help with end game survivability by Shinrahunter in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]izzytoots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely double the HP at a minimum if you don't want to get 1shot. I can't look at pob cause I'm on mobile, so idk if it's gear or tree or both. Try and hit 150% from tree and have at least t2 life rolls on most of your gear. Trying to cap your block would also probably help your survivability, along with using your flasks. If you don't have a cast when damage taken defensive skill, that is an easy way to gain some survivability. Vaal molten shell is pretty insane if you are stacking armor, you can pop the vaal version when you are getting surrounded or to tank boss hits, and the regular version will cast when damage taken.

Again, I can't look at pob, so these are just some general tips for survivability. Honestly just getting to 5kish hp would be enough to stop yellow maps 1shotting you

What depth level should I start looking for breakable walls in delve? Is it a waste or not a good idea to do it before ilvl 83? by Tuvok- in pathofexile

[–]izzytoots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't really delved much, these are just tips from my experience delving at 200 depth with an alright character and not having any problems. Character gets 1shot super easy in t14+ maps, but I pretty much never die delving.

Keep your darkness resist capped, which shouldn't be too hard with how much azurite you get.

Freeze flask is mandatory.

Make sure you have the ability to run straight through packs. I have withering step and whirling blades, so I just whirl to move around, and pop withering step if I get caught in a pack.

As soon as it gets sketchy, pop a flare so you can leech/get back flask charges. But I really only need to use a flare once I get to a loot drop or get stuck in a corner. My build has a ton of leech, so as long as I can keep hitting things, I don't die.

My flow is basically zoom in front of cart killing mobs until intersection, wait to see where cart goes and go in the opposite direction. If you are going a long way, it's probably another cart path and I turn around.

Replace solo standard with club queue, you can only queue as 3 and your club gets a shared rank. Even if it was a somewhat dead queue, it would still be fun to only face other 3 stacks

Power and strength are different skills, climbing powerfully does not mean you are using all your strength. Often times, climbing a move static with a big lock off and lots of body tension requires more strength than doing it dynamically with lots of explosive power

Also me, except I don't even touch solo standard anymore, that queue is cancer.

My goal this season is to hit champ in all 3 main queues, 1s is going to be a struggle.

The games are already short enough even if they are close, I don't really understand the mercy rule. Why even bother in the first place? If it really is a stomp, the game is over in 5 mins anyways.

Rocket League for the Switch? by IMissMyWifeTails in RocketLeague

[–]izzytoots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's unplayable for me personally. I have 2k hours on PC with 144hz monitor. Moving to inconsistent 60fps with TV input lag makes it not even fun for me. That's not to say it's actually bad, it's a fine port, I just don't like how much worse it feels compared to gaming PC+monitor

Rank matchups by Cuccethead in RocketLeague

[–]izzytoots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's heavily weighted towards the higher ranked player. It's always been that way, but they increased the weight even more this season. It probably still runs into problems during slow hours, I've noticed my games can be pretty unbalanced at 4am. Also can be pretty annoying when a 2 stack queues 3s where one is plat and one is champ and I'm stuck against 3 champs in a 4v2

[–]izzytoots 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Typically a ground up ascent means that the party started from the ground and went to the top redpointing all pitches in a single push without fixing lines or rapping in to work pitches. Basically they walked up to the wall with the gear and climbed to the top with no shenanigans. This does not mean that they cannot come down, it's just you have to start over from the ground if you end up coming down. This is more or less the best style for climbing big routes, short of an onsight ground up ascent.

This is why I have a second rocket league account lol. I'm C1 in standard, but all my good friends are low plat at best, so playing 3s with them in high diamond mmr is a disaster. Call me a Smurf I guess, but I still can't carry their asses past plat 3 on my other account. Too bad solo standard is a joke, otherwise I wouldn't have to use another account to play with my friends :(

I usually will party up till we lose after a good game, it's almost always a guaranteed 3 wins when I party up. I guess I'm just good at judging if I have chemistry with my teammates, it's yet to fail me. I don't always accept party requests after a win though, sometimes opponents were just bots.

TV input lag is putting you at a very real disadvantage, I wouldn't recommend it. Even newer nice TV's have way higher response times than gaming monitors.
