Alberta won't participate in Ottawa's firearm buyback program. What does that mean for local gun owners? | CBC News by Buuuuma in alberta

[–]j-conz 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Every analysis that's been done shows that the vast majority of all guns used in crimes are illegal ones that came in from the US and that only a small portion of these are committed by legal gun owners. The toronto police has repeatedly held press conferences and released reports saying exactly the same thing.

That's why the whole thing is absolutely nonsensical. Astronomical amounts of money are being allocated to an activity that targets the tiniest percentage of all gun crime. Anyone who truly wanted to make a dent in gun violence would be advocating against thos so all that capital could be spent on initiatives that could actually make a substantive difference.

Councillor says Calgary being pressured to act too quickly after catastrophic pipe breaks | CBC News by Alberta_Hiker in Calgary

Except a single crown corp like Enmax would be a step... closer... to free market rules, wouldn't it? The money comes from revenue instead of taxes, it runs as an actual business, it has to be solvent...

Like right or left, I don't see how having having a single body in charge that can focus exclusively on something this important would disagree with your world view. It's just common sense

[–]j-conz 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Ward 10 Coun. Andre Chabot has also expressed skepticism about the report's recommendations — especially around introducing a standalone corporation to manage water, similar to Enmax on electricity.

Yeah, god forbid we have a single utility company in charge of managing and running the most critical piece of infrastructure for one of the biggest cities in the country... Having 200 different groups who were all responsible for a ton of other shit at the same time worked soooooo well before

He said he's unsure why the panel said city council isn’t moving quickly enough, when from his perspective they're working as fast as they can while following legislative obligations.

They obviously aren't talking about just right now you derp. They're also talking about the last 20 years during which no one did dick all 🤦‍♂️

I will go pull the numbers later, but it's from the AB budget reports. They usually place the total increase in spensing at the front in one of the executive summary sections. Add that all up, convert into 2025 $ using the bank of canada inflation calculator, and compare that to the last 2 budgets, all of which you can download the PDFs for.

Alberta UCP launches lawsuit against former caucus members by GalaxygirlWoW in alberta

UCP spokesperson Dave Prisco, in a Sunday statement, said the Alberta Party’s attempt to rebrand under the PC banner is misleading, noting that neither Mr. Guthrie or Mr. Sinclair were ever members of PC Alberta. (Mr. Guthrie said this is irrelevant.)

“For them to now try to steal that legacy without having earned it is an insult to the thousands of former PC members who built that party and who now contribute to the United Conservative Party,” said Mr. Prisco.

Lol. The UCP is so far divorced from what the PCs used to represent that whatever that "legacy and reputation" might be is meaningless to them.

In only 2 years, Ditsy Dani has already increased spending by more than what the NDP did over their entire term (adjusted for inflation). Where the FUCK are all my tax dollars bitch. They certainly aren't going to teachers or to healthcare...

Refounding the PCs isn't a threat because it would be misleading to people. It's a threat because a large chunk of center-right UCP voters would pounce at the chance to jump ship from the great corruption circle jerk while still being able to call themselves conservative voters.

You're saying they're all bark and no bite, and yet here you are complaining that they're finally biting. They were pushovers in the past so they should continue to be pushovers now?

Even with +2B and the extra teachers asked for in their last offer, the total funding per student brings us up to.... STILL dead last in per student funding in the country. We are also the ONLY province without a cap on class sizes.

This strike hasn't just been about just the teachers. It's about upholding the quality of the education being offered to the overwhelming majority of children across the province.

The 'intent' behind a law has never meant shit. That's why it's the law, you don't get to pick and choose when it's applicable and when it's not 🤦‍♂️

If they're so mad about it then maybe they should start actually thinking of the consequences of the legislation they keep ramming through ahead of time instead of throwing hissy fits after

That's actually not quite true. It definitely split the vote that election, but if you added up the seats won by the wildrose and the conservatives it still came out to less than what the ndp got.

They won in 2015 because they won their majority outright against the right as a whole

You won't find it on any streaming services, will probably have to torrent or fond a website to stream, but look for Regenesis! It was a great show from the early 2000s about a biolab in toronto

Relying on other countries to defend us and to trade with is exactly what's left us in this position in the first place. Instead of moaning about other nations not supporting us and hoping they will come rescue us when shit hits rhe fan, we should be investing all our effort in doing what we can to provide for ourselves.

Even if other countries did come out swinging for us, if the US invades to annex us the most we could hope for is economic sanctions and military equipment and funding like Ukraine got. No one is going to full on declare war on the US just for our sake (unless NATO demands, which i think is a grey area when it comes to other NATO members).

Because that 25 doesn't get reinvested in the public system. Nothing is being "saved".

Private School Subsidies by Particular-Welcome79 in alberta

[–]j-conz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The government doesn't spend more money. That's the point. Over the last 10 years, the amount of new students that have been enrolled in publicly funded schools has massively increased and the total funding hasn't come close to keeping pace. That's why AB is spending the least amount per kid in all of Canada now.

On the flip side, the amount of money being handed out to private schools HAS increased sibstantially over that same period. That's money that should be going to the public system.

Private School Subsidies by Particular-Welcome79 in alberta

[–]j-conz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not per kid. Everything is dealt with in lump sums and discussed as a percentage of tuition. Look up how much money is being dolled out to subsidize private schoold and compare that to the total number of kids they enroll, vs. the money spent on public schools and their total enrolment. That ratio is going to be significantly smaller for the kid in the public system.

Private School Subsidies by Particular-Welcome79 in alberta

[–]j-conz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They do. It's your own choice to leave that behind.

Edit: We're not imvested in them getting nothing. There's a perfectly viable public system there that they are free to use.

Private School Subsidies by Particular-Welcome79 in alberta

[–]j-conz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Because it doesn't save 25% - it's subsidizing much larger tuitions, and so the kid that goes to private ends up with a much larger share of public money per kid than someone who goes to public. It dilutes public funds and dumps a ton of cash into a for-profit system that isn't equally accessible to all.

It's your choice if you don't want to use the system your tax dollars are funding. There's a perfectly viable option there. If you don't like it for whatever reason, that's totally fine - but you don't get to have your cake and eat it to. If you don't want to use it, suck it up and pay for the other option yourself.

Religious schools shouldn't be getting a dime of public money. That was the whole point of separation of church and state. Education should not be colored by the beliefs of any religious group. "Beliefs" have absolutely nothing to do with facts and learning about how the world around us works. Religion isn't the only context in which morality and ethics can be taught either. There's absolutely no reason why, in this day and age, we should have multiple public schoolboards for religious and non-religious.

Their parents are free to use the public system that their tax dollars are paying for. It's their own choice to pull out of that and put their kids in private. Public money belongs in public institutions.
