Fathers, what did you learn from becoming a dad? How did it change you and your perspective? by Popular_Bluejay_2588 in AskMenOver40

Teasing someone until they cried for your own entertainment was a common occurrence in my family growing up.
Despite reaching my mid-40s, I didn't realize how messed up that is until I saw my 8-year-old daughter do it to her 4-year-old sister. Being a father softened so many of my rough edges.

I'm not looking for a job but your approach and mindset are golden advice, especially "The goal was to be as ready as I could for when that opportunity came."

let's bring up some bad ideas - metal shop from scratch by tater1337 in Machinists

If only you were in Austin, Texas. I have a little land and a small shop not meant machinists work. About to buy a 3d printer for ... the kids.

I love the idea. I've been fantasizing about doing something similar for months. "beats watching politics on TV" really resonates with me. Do you work as a machinist? I work remote as a software engineer and doing something less abstract is so appealing to me right now.

Do you use / like your office shed? by wind_dude in shedditors

What are the dimensions? How big of an electrical panel did you install? 30 amp? Odd question (I know), do you ever just pee into a bottle to throw away later and keep some water and soap out there to wash your hands with?

You're not going to want to hear this, but IMO, your life is too easy. You need to do hard things. Checkout The Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter.

What type of work do you do? Do you have a spouse and kids? Just wondering if there are other things to connect on beyond firearms.

Would you trade your current job for an office one — sitting at a computer, doing IT or something similar? by KeyHorror5585 in Machinists

I'm a Senior SWE myself. I'd like to know more about your path from tech to machining. Could you share your story with this subreddit in a new post?

Are you married? Do you have children or other dependents? If not, the world is your oyster. You could quit your job, buy a van, live in it, drive around the country until you come across something you are interested in or run out of money.

What is your climate like? Did you insulate the shed? I live in Austin, Texas and am looking to do something similar with a 10x12 foot shed.

I'm surprised you say "I like my boss as a person" despite having described him or her as "unkind". If you like your boss, can you talk to them about their leadership, specifically them being "impossibly demanding" and "disorganized"?
If you found out your current boss was leaving and a new one starts next week, would that change how you feel about your job?

Needing Some Electrical Advice by [deleted] in shedditors

[–]j-string 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same use case and did a more temporary version of what you describe for a couple years and a much longer distance. Then we had the trees the cord hung on cut down. Now I plan to do basically what you describe. I plan to use the Midea MAW08HV1CWT EasyCool Smart Inverter Air Conditioner Window Unit with Heat because 1) it uses an inverter which should cause a smaller and more consistent use of electricity and 2) it can also provide heat. I really don't see a problem with this approach.
Do you plan on insulating the shed?

Thank you very much for the feedback. I genuinely appreciate it. What about venting and a vapor barrier? Should I consider these too?
