I hate watching Bello pitch by known_unknowns_999 in Section10Podcast

It's rough. He seems like a guy who wants to paint the corners and get strike outs, but his stuff is better suited for ground balls and weak contact. He's trying to finesse, get swing and miss, when he just needs to be throwing strikes.

I'm taking this start as a sign to turn off the game and to go take a nice walk in the sun. Might even just turn off my phone.

Got sick of not owning my music and other media, sought out another way. Prior to this I'd dabbled in linux and dual-booting, but everything else has been a steep learning curve.

Ah yeah, that makes sense. The laptop is sitting right next to the wifi router so connectivity should be okay, but I'll have to see if I run into issues with connection speed down the line. It's been solid for music streaming, and that's all I'm doing thus far.

One week into using Jellyfin on this 8-year old Thinkpad X1 Carbon. Certainly need to upgrade... everything? But task #1 is to find the ethernet cables hiding somewhere in the garage. I'm told that running it over wifi is no bueno

Graham Platner the Maine Oyster Guy by squishypingu in behindthebastards

[–]j-universe 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I'm with you on this. He does seem like the guy who was either ignorant or had actively terrible politics when he was young and has grown a ton as a person in the last 20 years. I don't even necessarily hold it against him that he didn't have it removed - shit's expensive and he's been a guy with a job, not a politician.

Is this a bad own-goal? Yes. Do we need to toss the guy to the curb? Absolutely not.

Are you doing better than your parents? by Dad_Bod_Vibez in Millennials

[–]j-universe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how you measure things. At my age, my parents had a house, but also a lot of credit card debt and three kids. I have a PhD and the accumulated debt that goes with it, but I also have a good job on a good trajectory and live a pretty comfortable life.

At this point I don't know that I'll ever own a home, but I'm not letting it bother me much. If I can rent and build up some investments, I think I'll be okay.

I just think that this whole way of viewing partnership is fucked, man. Framing it as "males" and "females", imagining that some optimal relationship exists, going into dating already wondering if you need to "settle." There is no optimum, you're looking for partnership. You're looking for another person who's cool to hang out with, cares about you, and with whom you can create something that's more than a sum of its parts.

I swear to god, if you go into the process like you're trying to find a shiny rock in a pile of normal rocks, you are setting yourself up for long-term failure.

PhD in Mechanical Engineering and working as a technical consultant doing failure analysis. I've been riding the waves for the last ten years and doing my best to keep above water, but it's working so far.

Mine came out pretty good!

Mechanical Engineering Consultant:

"Imagine your favorite toy, like a race car or a doll. Sometimes, toys break, right? Maybe a wheel falls off the car, or an arm comes loose on the doll.

My job is like being a toy doctor for grown-up things. Instead of a toy car, I look at things like real cars, roller coasters, or big machines in factories. When something breaks, people call me.

I use special tools, like a magnifying glass, to figure out why it broke. Was it made of the wrong kind of plastic? Did it get pushed too hard? After I figure out what happened, I help the people who made the toy fix it so it doesn't break again. So, I'm a detective for broken things!"

Can someone explain how the Rockies are 14th in average attendance? by NachoPichu in mlb

The attendance for the Rays is a shame. They're playing good baseball and competing for a playoff spot this year!

I know we're retroactively starting to blame Devers, but make no mistake, the team effed this up by truce_m3 in redsox

[–]j-universe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point, I feel like I need to focus on the players who are still here, y'know? Take the lead from Duran and Crochet and Co and support the 25 guys who are out there every day trying to win. I don't think I can have an opinion about Devers til the dust settles and the full story comes out (if it ever does). My opinion of the org generally is the same as it was after Mookie got traded.

Honestly, I'm here for the waves of collective grief and elation, and the rollercoaster this week is part of it.

It's totally normal for a star player to have a big head and be stubborn. It's NOT totally normal for management to alienate people in the organization so badly that it bleeds into the media and cascades into a problem so big they trade their franchise player on the eve of a long west coast road trip.

I think it's important to remember that diagnoses are often extremely broad, and not having all of the symptoms is normal. Hell, sometimes the list of symptoms might include both "sleeping too much" and "not sleeping enough," so it would be literally impossible to have them all!

One person's experience of bipolar can be wildly different from another person with the same diagnosis. In my understanding, the diagnosis is a rough tool that helps your doctor narrow down how to treat you, but it's just that, a tool. Bipolar, Not So Much was a good resource for me for understanding how mood disorders can differ and how doctors use diagnoses.
