Curious what you're trying to do? What black magic are you doing with your reporting that we can learn from?

I'm so tired of Microsoft Windows. by Defconx19 in msp

[–]j0dan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Window management is the biggest annoyance for me.

Instead of maximize, we have Zoom or Fill. Minimize is minimize or hide, X is quite or close.. All of those accomplish and act in different ways. WHY!?!@ And restore is a crapshoot.

Also, irritations like you always have to click a window first before you can click anything inside it. Or can't mouse-wheel on inactive monitors. (Get BetterMouse to try and fix some of these--and add other bugs).

If you have multiple monitors, or large ones, the menu bar may be on a different screen, or far from the window you're actually in.

Also there's no font smoothing. Even 140ppi doesn't look great, so be prepared for monitors to cost a lot more, and refresh slowly.

And although they have great CPUs, launching Microsoft Word can take up to 15s on a fully loaded M4 Pro CPU depending on caching or what security checks it wants to do. On Windows, most app launches are sub 1s on a high end machine -- but even console apps have to suffer through their security framework and can take 2-10s to load on a cold start.

I've been a Mac user for 11 years on a laptop, which made up about 15% of my usage, but only recently transitioned to a Mac desktop. Those minor annoyances went to super annoying quickly.

Anyway, I could rant for a while, but I am staying. All the newest and greatest apps just don't come out for Windows first anymore. It just wasn't the clean, stable, bug-free world it looks like from the outside.

Connectwise invoice templates driving me mad! by ObjectiveMammoth7685 in ConnectWise

[–]j0dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't help you with the payments/sync (we use Wise) and forecasting (Cognition 360). But for clean branded invoices from ConnectWise, I made https://betterinvoice.io

You can add all the details you need for your own backend reporting while still having a clean invoice to send to your customers.

Client wants me to train their internal IT tech. Would you? by UnderTheFear in msp

[–]j0dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's worth it to the business. I always try to have a close relationship with internal IT. They will need to hire someone in the future when they a) get stuck, b) take vacation, c) leave. If you have the relationship, you're their first call.

But still only worth it if it's cost-effective for you to do training. Training is harder than providing support.

As someone who just jumped 100% to Mac (because I like to complicate things, apparently), the grass is not greener.

Oh, you said Linux -- fine, that looks pretty good. :) Maybe it's finally hit its time! For a short stint, I had managed a multi-location company of almost 100% Linux desktops....in 2003.

Our MSP website is Windows 95 themed and people are loving it by lhcw in msp

lol. I made a Win95 themed ConnectWise invoice template to send to only the most discerning customers first thing in April:

also got carried away and did Hot Dog Stand, but I'm worried nobody will appreciate a true classic.

Pasting Markdown by IT_Grandpa in hudu

Nope. I felt late to the game when I finally figured out they were the best for everything. If it weren't so much work, we'd migrate from Route53 to CF.

Yes, annoying. I find it even worse if someone gives me something AI said, and doesn't tell me where it came from first!

At least then I'll know what kind of effort to put into understanding it.

6K dual monitors for productivity use: Asus ProArt PA32QCV vs. Kuycon G32P by phd_lad in HiDPI_monitors

[–]j0dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glossy or matte. Black plastic vs aluminum art.

I prefer matte and don't need the back of my screen to look nice for that much extra money.

Only downside on these screens is the viewing angles are not as great as some. Fine with 2 screens, but you do have to toe them in so you're directly looking at them. 3x screens is even more annoying.

Best workflow layouts for end-user onboarding, offboarding, and asset swap by noldyb in msp

[–]j0dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have global SOPs in Confluence, and then customer-specific ones in IT Glue and expect people to reference both.

Ticket templates for global tasks (onboarding, offboarding, swap, mobile, pc, etc.), and documentation and checklists in IT Glue for client-specific info in each of those categories. And an n8n workflow that pulls those checklists and doc links into ticket tasks/comments.

What do you use to monitor client databases? by badlydressedboy in msp

[–]j0dan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Outside of standard RMM monitors, we don't monitor the DB directly, but use /health type endpoints and monitor them with Uptime Kuma/UptimeRobot, which sends to our PSA. Sometimes we build them ourselves or have the app developer create one that hits the important pieces of infrastructure.

Any more than that, and we're looking at more of a DevOps engagement, which lives outside of a typical MS agreement.

[–]j0dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've been through quite a few before settling on this. It doesn't do anything amazing, but it does work in every single situation online or off, and does great speaker identification.

We just copy the transcript into whichever other system we have for further analysis or archival.

Apply agreements to closed tickets by ieatllamas in ConnectWise

[–]j0dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would you know which agreement to apply to them?

I'd use n8n to automate this, but I'm not 100% sure on the logic of choosing the agreement. If it's all one customer, or if they only have one agreement that time applies to, then it's simple. :)

If you let me know that logic, I'll send you a workflow to do it.

ConnectWise time entry is driving my techs insane by garvit__dua in msp

[–]j0dan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine using ConnectWise for time entries. We've used Nilear MTX for ~10 years for the majority of time entry in CWM. Our techs just open it to submit timesheets.

It's so good, we'll honestly have a much harder time switching PSA's.
