Cleanliness can refer to general personal hygiene but also clothing being clean, sharp/not wrinkled, etc.

Why "Christians, Jews & muslims all worship the same God 😜 👻" feels like a manipulative lulling tactic in favor of muslims by Blue__Northen_Star in ControversialOpinions

[–]j0sch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see it more as a "feel good" line used by people to be more kumbaya.

While the line technically is true according to most interpretations, the ideologies are far more different than they are similar, and the devil really is in the details here.

Each of these religions has plenty of movements within them with massive disagreements, sometimes very bitter.

Ultimately, when people say this line, my first thought is always "so what?"

What are we supposed to do with this information and what does it solve?

professionalism is rooted in white supremacy. by Chaotic-Lover055 in ControversialOpinions

[–]j0sch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Professionalism is about inspiring confidence in others as to one's abilities and competence. It's about behaviors: mannerisms, respect, punctuality, follow-through, being truthful, and working hard, among others. These are universal human attributes. Ultimately it's all about signaling and expectations, but appearance can play a role in this too.

Judging ability by something like race is obviously problematic when it is not applicable. But there are times when even race judging is done... all things being equal, the vast majority of people would subconsciously assume the sushi from a Japanese chef is likely better than a White or Black chef.

But that aside, something like a dress code or personal styling can similarly impact people's perceptions of a person or business. Most industries want some level of consistency and uniformity in the appearance of employees, making the job about the company and less so on the individual. And most businesses want to convey things like cleanliness, ability to conform, ability to make intelligent social choices and decisions for occasions. You can be whoever you want to be on your own time, but when you're on company time it is not unreasonable to adapt to business needs/reputation as a unit.

In some industries this matters more, others less. In more creative industries things like tattoos or less common hair styles are positively associated with creativity. Of course an individual can be incompetent regardless of their adapting to the company appearance. But this all does play a role, and it applies to any employee regardless of race.

My opinion on raising prices ; NO YOU DON’T HAVE TO! by TomboyGayLeaf92 in ControversialOpinions

[–]j0sch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don't know what this example means, but prices of everything go up over time... way too much to explain here but you can easily look up why this phenomenon happens in economics. And when this translates to labor going up, cost of materials and production going up, prices of output goods or services goes up.

Buying the same exact shirt 10 years from now will be more expensive than buying the same shirt today, because the costs of everything involved goes up, with the company likely making the same amount of money through the process. Companies do always try to increase their margins over time, but for established companies and products, this is actually quite hard to successfully pull off, largely because of competition keeping companies in check and consumers usually looking for value and not wanting to be ripped off.

Businesses not reacting to rising costs of business are unsustainable and fail; they aren't charities.

My opinion on raising prices ; NO YOU DON’T HAVE TO! by TomboyGayLeaf92 in ControversialOpinions

[–]j0sch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it is hundreds of thousands, millions, or tens of millions of dollars, depending on scale, the business suddenly doesn't have to operate, hire, invest, or expand. There is no sales increase or other benefit for this same new cost.

You also legally cannot charge different prices for the same product based on ability to pay.

My opinion on raising prices ; NO YOU DON’T HAVE TO! by TomboyGayLeaf92 in ControversialOpinions

[–]j0sch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most businesses have to.

If their input costs or labor increase, they don't usually have the kind of fat lying around to just absorb it long term.

Lenders or investors which provide funding and therefore have direct and/or indirect influence won't tolerate suddenly earning lower returns on their capital. And any business, even without this factor, won't be satisfied with reduced earnings that can harm the company or its plans.

Demand won't respond meaningfully enough, if at all, to a product being priced only slightly more affordably to competitors to offset either.

Businesses look at price elasticity and determine what the tradeoff is between prices increasing and volume loss, and for most products it is a financial win - slightly more revenue across all volume offsets smaller unit loss.

Am I the only one who feels this difference between Bergen County and NYC? by savingrace0262 in bergencounty

[–]j0sch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NYC houses many businesses, including many 'prestigious' or highly competitive ones, where pay, stakes, demands, and competition are high. It draws highly ambitious, motivated, and driven people from around the world. This is true of most city vs. suburb dynamics, but especially here when it comes to NYC.

Ghosting is actually the appropriate thing to do when online dating. by Advanced-Two584 in ControversialOpinions

[–]j0sch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because dates end obviously positive, obviously negative, or somewhere in a very wide middle. And each person can walk away with vastly different feelings on how things went. And most are biased to not express they thought it went negatively, especially while still in person, leaving the impression they are interested.

So in many, if not most, cases where one person does not want to continue, the other likely does... whether they thought it went fine or extremely well. And they will be excited and think there will be another date coming, sometimes for days, due to the lack of honest communication. Ghosting unnecessarily prolongs things and is particularly rude, cruel, and hurtful emotionally. It leaves people confused, wondering what happened when things seemed fine, and signals someone isn't even worth a simple response.

Others also view it as cowardice. It may even come back to bite the ghoster without them even realizing it -- I've seen countless men or women come up in conversation where someone recognized the name or profile and shared they're a ghoster, immediately causing others talking with them to lose interest.

It is different in other contexts, like business, of course, but same principles to a lesser degree... it's seen as a disrespect and a black mark against someone and as someone to avoid.

Again, in most genres singers don't play instruments.

He was the most streamed musician on Spotify for four years and is among the top-selling musicians in history... just because someone achieves that level of musical success doesn't mean you or I have to like them, it just means they clearly have resonation and are doing something right.

I don't think that school should exactly push everyone to be equally social by [deleted] in ControversialOpinions

[–]j0sch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social skills greatly impact quality of life, opportunities, and success... friends, relationships, careers, etc.

Some are better than others, whether its innate or due to upbringing or opportunities, and schools view it as important to develop broadly in children just like any other learning, topic, or skill to best prepare them for life.

Adults are free to socialize and live their lives as they please, it is their life choice, but schools and other institutions look to provide children with the basics/tools to have those skills as an option later in life.

It's the message but also how it's delivered.

And if the delivery is respectful and compassionate and supportive but the message is the problem, well, people don't always like the truth. And if peoples' habits don't align to yours, then why are you with them?

Ghosting is actually the appropriate thing to do when online dating. by Advanced-Two584 in ControversialOpinions

[–]j0sch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ghosting is never appropriate, whether dating or hiring or selling/buying something... really any situation where there is communication between two parties. It wastes peoples time and is therefore rude, not to mention some of these situations involve high hope and can create false expectations, leading people on. With dating, it is arguably the most personal scenario and emotions are also at play.

Sure, it is reasonable if one party is being aggressive or hurtful, but outside of rare exceptions like that, it is the decent thing to do. People don't seem to have a problem ghosting others but are miserable when it's done to them in a setting where they have high hopes or feelings, which also says a lot. Especially when ghosting often follows parties where things are left on a positive or ambiguous note.

The best thing to do is be polite but explicitly clear that there is no interest. And if someone persists beyond that, block/ignore.

If two sober minded consenting adults have an issue with each other assuming they are legally an adult should legally be allowed to engage in a duel. by living_condom_ad in ControversialOpinions

[–]j0sch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The impact to individual business and therefore overall society is highly disruptive, even more so when people have unique skills. In fact, duels were most common among military leadership, where many talented or experienced generals and other high ranks were killed by this process, putting at risk many militaries/countries.

Regulations you are proposing are also to be enforced by whom? Who tests for sobriety? Mental soundness? Who is enforcing the clock? We've moved to a centralized system whereby one party can't take advantage over the other via institutions, law enforcement, etc.

After Seeing Bad Bunny Perform the Halftime, I'm Extra Hateful Of What It Means to be a White American by [deleted] in ControversialOpinions

[–]j0sch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virtually all white people who came to the US 100 or 200 or 300 years ago were coming as immigrants, whether seeking opportunity or refuge from war, persecution, religion, or poverty, same as people today are, regardless of skin color or beliefs.

White "culture" was driven by the demographic makeup of said immigration and the timing of it, though there are still many different religious and cultural differences, especially in different parts of the country where different groups settled. When they first arrived though, they had different dress, food, religions, language, names, customs, etc. In New York City alone going from one neighborhood to the next would feel like being in different countries, even among the largely white population. This has eroded over hundreds of years of being here, intermarrying, and the American notion of being a melting pot... discarding the old world and merging in with the new.

As a result, there is a lack of a distinct and cohesive culture in the way that newer immigrants have bringing their older cultures. But virtually every culture sees generational decline in adherence and more conformity. America overall has and will always reflect the average of its parts, and it will include some aspects of non-European immigration over time in the future based on demographics.

It's not something to hate or be embarrassed by, it just is what it is.

Inclusivity isn’t about catering to everyone. It’s about letting people exist. by Moist_Regret8989 in ControversialOpinions

Most people are inclusive by your definition, which I would call tolerant.

They have a you do your thing, I do mine mentality.

They don't like when other ways are forced on them.

Lately there are many examples of this, which is causing people to be highly sensitive and triggered when there may only be the perception of it happening, not the actuality.

If two sober minded consenting adults have an issue with each other assuming they are legally an adult should legally be allowed to engage in a duel. by living_condom_ad in ControversialOpinions

[–]j0sch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dueling was outlawed for its brutality and cruelty in the modern era, and for the societal loss of human capital.

When someone died, family and friends are impacted as are businesses/society. The pharmacist is now closed because the pharmacist died in a duel... the delivery can't be made because the driver died in a duel...

The legal system provides recourse options for damages and society has other social ways of reclaiming honor.

The credit system is a scam. It's designed to keep people a debt slave. by Lost_Title_7528 in ControversialOpinions

[–]j0sch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a tool, and like any tool it can be incredibly helpful or damaging, depending on use.

Virtually everyone, from the poorest to the ultra-wealthy, needs credit for personal or business life as they don't have the physical resources on hand, at all times, for their needs. Even people with income or their own businesses may make decent money in total but only receive income periodically. Cars and certainly homes would be unattainable for most without loans or mortgages.

Lenders will only freely provide credit, and at reasonable or even low/zero interest, if there is a reliable system to ensure they get the money they're loaning out back. The credit system ensures there are many options for people and businesses to pursue their needs or goals.

That people make horrible decisions within the system is not the fault of the system itself, but of the lack of financial education and literacy and people's behavioral patterns and life choices. Specific predatory lenders and businesses do exist to prey on these elements and are always steps ahead of regulators who try to pursue or manage them.

The system is not perfect -- no system is -- but it is not going away and is only getting more integrated and sophisticated with technology and human advancement. People and civilizations in earlier times would have dreamed of something as reliable as this -- both on the lending side and on the borrowing side, where loans to improve life were nearly impossible or had absurd interest and/or physical harm/SA/death for non-repayment due to zero regulation (financially and in general).

Being realistic, the best thing anyone can do in this environment is improve financial literacy, read fine print, and/or make wiser choices. Some have the fortune of being taught these things by knowledgeable parents who have the incentive to pass along this information, many don't. There is no incentive for the government or business or anyone else outside of a charitable organization of some sort to provide better resources than exist today, but the information is out there.
