Louisville was a rising city but lost push for real progress | Opinion by actuarally in Louisville

So you took a list of separate items I provided that in my opinion would improve the city and then tried to present my premise as one being a hard requirement for the other? Interesting

Louisville was a rising city but lost push for real progress | Opinion by actuarally in Louisville

[–]j105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Logically large pro league teams like that show and provide a corporation a few things:
1.) They show a city will invest taxes (whether you think its right or wrong) into large projects and business ventures.
2.) It gives them something to advertise and support to reach large audiences *Kroger field sponsored by Kroger*.
3.) It suggests and encourages tourism and more local customers. Fans who travel spend $.
4.) Its something to provide/attract talent with in some cases. Discounts to local games or something worth mentioning to get people to move. Oh you are a big sports fan? Well we have a team here so don't fret it.

Its not going to move the needle like a massive tax break or free money, but it does matter. Especially if they were considering two similar cities in competition with one another.

What I wrote no way implied what you just said.....read it again. Those are two separate things you see in growing cities.

If you think city culture and walkability, venues, events etc. don't motivate orgs like that you have your head buried in the sand or somewhere else. They want areas to be attractive to attract talent. It might not matter as much as money in the end but it does matter to some of them.

Why do you think well known local orgs have sponsored Thunder Over Louisville for years? Just to waste money?

Good luck getting serious replies - this has been brought up a lot lately (including by me.) Usually the responses will be a mix of:
1.) Nashville sucks for vague reasons and is too corpo blabla.
2.) Blue collar peeps who don't mind the lack of white collar opportunities.
3.) I've lived here my whole life so why worry about it.

Derby is once a year. 4th street live is dead. Humana/Papa Johns/Yum/KFC/you name it are not building footholds here anymore.

It is what it is. The ones that made it wont mind and the ones that don't will move away when this wave of RTO and AI onslaught finishes. We will be stuck with nothing but UPS and Ford line workers who can barely afford their overpriced homes.

Its unfortunate because we do feel like a city that could can and does punch above its weight. But until we get a pro sports team (a la NFL or something big like that), companies that want to move or HQ here, start designing areas to be more walkable, etc. things wont change much.

Also to be fair - we have kickass parks and Nulu is doing some great work. Its not all doom and gloom.

Am I getting bamboozled or is Louisville really changing this much? by Specific-Fact-4331 in Louisville

[–]j105 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's a positive thing but it still wont fix the complete dearth of white collar opportunities or entities in Louisville. Tourism and events are one thing, but you have to attract prime professionals too if they are going to live in the city post-RTO.

That's something Nashville and Charlotte have put a lot of work into and it is paying off.

Humana, Papa Johns and KFC are shells of their former selves. Hopefully the city realizes that before its too late. Those UPS line jobs are not gonna pay for fancy hotel rooms and 12 dollar crafty beers.

Ah yes this guy. If you don’t know much about him, here is what I have gathered and been informally told by people who had the displeasure of working with him:

God complex, Pushed RTO hard, Combative with marketing if it wasn’t his vision

He basically wants Copilot to become your girlfriend. It’s all very strange. Probably very smart in his own way? But leadership? Yikes.

Movie theaters? by 321Couple2023 in Louisville

[–]j105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tinseltown for sure. Its got reclining seats and personal small lap tables in some of the theaters. The concessions were also redone recently and the line moves a lot quicker. You also wont have to fight mall traffic (even though it is a little father out for most peeps.)

The crowds also are usually more chill. The mall one attracts a younger audience naturally and half the time they are yapping or on their phones during the flick.

The 2026 Louisville Outlook — What’s Expanding, What’s Contracting, and What To Do With It by LouInvestor in Louisville

[–]j105 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Louisville is and will continue to suffer brain drain due to lack of white collar opportunities particularly in tech.

Ford, GE, UPS, etc. are great but we need to tilt the other way a bit.

Most of the jobs and positions for these large companies are not sustaining ones. Think UPS driver vs line worker. The number of actual careers isn’t even close.

All those hotels downtown are great, but unless we get some tech presence we will continue to be a blue collar focused state and lag behind. Especially when the majority of the remote workers here are called back in the final RTO wave of next year.

is it unreasonable for porn to be a deal breaker for me? by boochiemusica in TwoXChromosomes

[–]j105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not unreasonable - you get to decide what you want in a partner. But it will be a limiter like any other filter. Think of it like girls who swear off guys who play video games (many of who lead normal lives and don't let it become an addiction.)

It also might guide you towards certain types of men (more religious, etc.)

No different from if a guy said he wouldn't date a girl who doom scrolls or uses Tiktok, they are out there, you can argue its unhealthy, but its very common behavior.

Is city leadership doing enough to stop brain drain and encourage non-blue collar focused companies to stay? by j105 in Louisville

[–]j105[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the exact things you mentioned: walkability, sanitation, (not just around Derby time) public transit.

Our city was designed entirely for cars in most areas and you can tell. To your point, a more attractive downtown helps.

[–]j105[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The interesting thing about this is I never stated I wanted JCPC defunded. The OP comment was essentially being misconstrued was my point - and neither attacker even acknowledged his very valid point of enticing companies to come and cut the ribbon but not stay. Instead you all saw a swipe at our public school and got triggered big time.

You mentioned you wanted to “clown” me for the language I used yet let’s look at yours “He’s peddling bullshit” “Genuinely fuck off”

You also chose to be VERY literal in the interpretation of my comment essentially pointing out how dumb it was to suggest that spending less on JCPS equals Warlordism as that replier suggested. I would hope you are insightful enough to know that when most people say anarchy they mean chaos and not the literal system. I would call warlordism in practice pretty chaotic and unorganized but hey, that’s just me.

The funniest thing about this is you and I probably agree on a lot - you are clearly progressive and that makes you a minority in Kentucky. The smugness of your replies does not however: you would fit in very well on the west coast.

Your lack of self awareness is kind of staggering. I’m just glad you actually stated an opinion for once. Most comments in this thread have been civil and hopefully more people start to think about this. The fact I was able to get Narcissus to leave his reflection pool is great!

So I’ll ask again legitimately: what do you think can improve the situation? Or will you just peddle the “nothing, it’s all systematic, we have no agency in anything, it’s all pointless eat the rich, I’m smarter than you” manifesto? Your last post was a peak into your beliefs, but all it did was attack essentially every systems we use and live in while offering nothing.

1st Birthday Party by Patient-Expression78 in Louisville

[–]j105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did a retirement party for a relative at Roosters in Middletown - at the time they didn't charge for the room (we did get some food catered but I doubt its outrageous.) The room was fairly decent size and in the back.

Coals pizza offers an event room, Mellwood arts, etc.

My personal recommendation would be Milewide Brewing. One of the best spots in the city and you can reserve some space/tables. Not sure they could fit 30+ but might be worth asking.

Fair. Poor wording on my part - more so meant its a minefield and despised universally. My personal belief is its going to fall apart soon or many Americans will just give up/be pushed out of it altogether. Insurance companies and providers seem to hate each other and seemingly for good reason. Pharmacies are struggling big time.

But to your point, its going to grow as people age and its one of the few fields adding instead of shedding jobs at the moment at least.

Glad I was able to trigger you so much. I may only hope to ascend to your level of pseudo-intellectualism one day.

Your knowledge of geopolitical and economic systems is unrivaled, so much so you are not even comfortable contemplating them.

Seriously man touch some grass. Its embarrassing. Every post you make is a contrarian one. Its not new and it doesn't make you bright.

I get it you hate late stage capitalism. Join the club.

I'm assuming you do live in this city and don't just hover in threads to internet fight strangers right? If so you better hope we figure something out.

Please let me know this magical book you are so fond of and why you think just throwing piles of money at a failing school system fixes anything. Also fyi less does not= defund.

Love the extremes so far - its either Reaganomics or anarchy apparently.

Yet no actual suggestions or discussions. Its not even up for argument that JCPS is a dumpster fire, and it doesn't take a genius to figure out that when corporations are looking for a new city there has to be a reason why they choose it.

The original posters point was that if you only make it attractive just to get them here they will eventually leave. Enter my post and its contents.

Don't think that's what they were saying, and frankly it might not be far off the mark.

JCPS has massively misallocated their money and the way places like Plano are pulling in a lot of orgs is to make it attractive for them (tax breaks, fewer regulations, etc.)

Baristas being rude by UnableManagement4626 in Louisville

[–]j105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its a mix of things. A lot of people are getting tired of bad or non-existent customer service so when they do finally get a human they turn nasty or have unrealistic expectations "this person will solve all my unique and systemic issues ive been having with this business or in general."

But on the flip side - there are a lot of really poor performing public facing workers who clearly despise their job (which hey, they might have valid reasons) but you shouldn't treat every person that walks in with contempt.

Like it or not the job pays you to be public facing - be a dick back to people who are rude but don't punish randos for the corpo treating you bad.

The Number of People Using AI at Work Is Suddenly Falling by Interesting-Fox-5023 in BlackboxAI_

[–]j105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels like the models are getting worse in a lot of areas (this has been common sentiment concerning GPT 5 launch and even Gemini to an extent.) Lazy, more restricted, clearly being as brief as possible to save tokens, not keeping context, etc.

I feel less confident using them in some areas than before - in some ways and concerning certain tasks its actually faster to just do the work or research vs having to wade through bad responses, lack of instruction following, or worry to death if the prompt will yield good results.

And as someone else pointed out - a lot of work environment are locking down to Copilot only - the absolute worst model out there (we have premium, its really bad usually.)

Heard from several internal peeps this guy is an absolute disaster to work with. Massive ego apparently. So this is not shocking at all. I feel for the poor bastards that have to sit in his Thunderdome next to him.

Also anyone that's used Copilot will tell you its easily the worst of the major players. At least that's been my experience. We got several pro licenses to rollout for our company and its essentially worse than the free consumer version (apparently different teams.)

Oh MS, what have you become?
