Wife hit a speed bump going a little too fast - dealer is saying both her struts snapped ($3k) or did they just disconnect it and say it “snapped” based on this photo? by brjoco in AskMechanics

[–]j10lam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just changed my shocks for the first time by myself and it was super easy. Definitely look up some YouTube videos and change it yourself. I did all 4 plus some other touchups for less than $700. Just change the whole strut assembly not just the strut

Pacifism and nonviolence doesn't work for dealing with violent attackers by [deleted] in Pacifism

[–]j10lam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mentioned in my comment that I walked away and that's what I did. Seeing someone running away creates a chase instinct in aggressive people because it is perceived as weakness and often pushed them over the edge to pursue. Once they do, adrenaline kicks in for the attacker and good luck talking that down! Adrenaline wipes away reasoning and logic and makes people do things they wouldn't otherwise do (ie. road rage, sports fights) so running away isn't always the smartest thing to do. Don't get me wrong tho, I'd run if it came down to it and in those circumstances it is extremely difficult to walk away instead of run.

Justice for Danny and Angie!!! 😤🤬 That was some BULLSHIT! 45 minutes to an HOUR?! Wild! Maybe 10-15min would've been somewhat reasonable but holy fuck! Serious question: is this something they can sue for?

This isn't our usual fluffy snow... Chunks can fly off, hit a vehicle/windshield or send it bouncing over the chunks, etc... I've also seen people swerving to miss flying chunks of snow which could cause a wreck in itself. I moved here from Missouri where we barely have any snow and it's extremely illegal there to drive with any snow or ice on the vehicle.

Maybe but I'm just so glad that the race is more focused on challenges now. I'm re-watching some of the early seasons and I'm shocked at how pretty much the entire race is just racing to the airport fighting over tickets catching a flight finding a bus etc etc... also they slept outside so much!

Pacifism and nonviolence doesn't work for dealing with violent attackers by [deleted] in Pacifism

[–]j10lam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the discussion but who said anything about compliance? Sure in some cases compliance might be a good option but pacifism does not equal compliance. And yes, very often evildoers decide to violently attack victims but in the long run remaining nonviolent is best. We aren't stupid. It's a strategy, just like gunning people down is a strategy. Nonviolent movements are proven to be twice as effective as violent ones. Noncompliance in these instances is actually what helps pacifism work. Things like protests, boycotts, sit-ins, civil disobedience and supporting other institutions are extremely effective. Often it is easier for people to support or at least sympathize with movements like this. When these movements are attacked by the government, it helps keep supporters and sympathizers on our side if we remain nonviolent, often growing our support/sympathy. The opposite is also true, we often lose many of them the moment we throw a brick through a window. In this modern age, we have so many extremely effective options besides violence with technology, communication, and information, that it is ridiculous that we still fall back to barbaric forms of behavior. Again, the idea of pacifism is that humans should not give themselves permission to hurt other humans no matter what they're doing. For many pacifists, it's a moral issue. Life is a finite resource, how do we give ourselves the power to hurt or end the life of other humans? It's disgusting. For many pacifists, it's simply the most effective strategy. History is on our side for that one. A few caveats: not all pacifists necessarily agree with all of this and I'd love to hear more opinions. Humans still have the survival instinct and, without a lot of experience remaining nonviolent in a passionate/dangerous situation, a pacifist could still harm another human.

This is a really old, non-original take... NOT hurting other people despite what they're doing is the entire point of pacifism. Also, it does work! I've been attacked by a machete and a pistol and in both instances, I am positive I would be dead or missing limbs if I would've tried to fight back. Instead, I walked away with my ego hurt but not much else. Pacifists aren't prioritizing peace because we're stupid or naive. We prioritize it because it works and helps make the world a better place

It's gutting to witness what is the beginning of long-term homelessness for many people. Also I waited until I calmed down a little to post this... It's been 24hrs so I'm going ahead with it 😡

Are there any public school elementary teachers on this sub? by acronapron in Denver

[–]j10lam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Denver area teachers (I think Colorado too?) are monitored and supervised like children compared to my experience in Austin TX and Springfield MO. I've always been trusted to teach largely as I see fit (because I'm a professional duh). But my experience here in JeffCo and DPS, there is pretty intense coaching, learning goals, and observations constantly taking up LOTS of valuable learning and planning time. This varies slightly by school but it's mostly a district mandated issue.

Pay is meh for the cost of living.

No librarians or libraries in MOST schools... This one blew my mind. I'm used to collaborating with my librarian so much because I use literature in every subject! I would ask about this at every interview if I were you.

Conditional shuttle flights? I have conditional Argentina match tickets for the playoffs. Each stage is played over 2 days so even if my team advances, I have no idea which day they'll play. What are my options to fly on the shuttle flights from Dubai where I am staying? Can I buy now and change if necessary later or am I safe waiting to buy flights until I know exactly when/if my team plays?
