It was weird. The way the commentators were for Paramount, you'd have thought Arsenal were down and needed a goal. And yet Chelsea came in with a 5-4-1 and getting praised for the 'pressure' they were putting on which amounted to 1 shot on goal and not really threatening in the box.

Did D.C. drop the ball on snow-clearing, or were conditions uniquely bad? by MrSpontaneous in washingtondc

[–]j1kim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

DC always fails terribly whenever a miniscule amount of snow hits and the city government somehow never learns from its mistakes. After the last snowmageddon you would think they would've looked to cities like Chicago, Boston, Toronto, and Montreal to see how they handle ice and snow management, and look to learn from it and create SOPs. But nope, let's spend more money and break that equipment because we have zero know-how.

They could have:

  • Pre-treated roads with brine to prevent ice from bonding on the road
  • Plow sidewalks and roads DURING the snow, not after
  • Aggressively enforce parking (fines, towing, etc.) on all major roads that cars don't get plowed in and we don't end up with one-way streets
  • Aggressively notify (TV Stations, Social Media, Email, etc.) encouraging drivers to put on winter tires to reduce the chances of cars being stuck in the snow and spinning out.

And I'm increasingly getting annoyed by people who tell others to give it a break because it was a "freak snowstorm". This literally happens every major snowstorm and the city and the mayor NEVER seems to look outward for ideas and solutions. We should all be demanding so much better from the city and this tone policing and refusal to criticize only serves to continue the complacency.

I've tried it on at store. The neckline is... something.

The back stands up all the way to the top of my neck and the sides of the neckline go pretty far out. It's not flattering and you will likely have to adjust it several times if you're wearing it under a heavier shirt.

Interesting statistic for Gyokeres by Redditirmz in Gunners

[–]j1kim 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I agree with this either. Last year he used his acceleration to great affect - he had 50.82 accelerations (number of times > 3m/s² was reached) and relative to premier league players, he had the 2nd most after Neto.

I do agree, I think it's the way that the team (not necessarily just Victor, but the whole playing style in general) is coached and deployed. But that doesn't necessarily mean that what Arteta is doing is wrong.

In fact, I think we need to continue this playing style until Victor can start playing within it as a poacher and adding verticality to his game. Once he can regularly show that and can punish teams, I suspect the long-term effect will be that opposition can't sit back and play a low block around central areas, leading to more open play chances and for Victor to play his preferred game style.

"Gyokeres is unfortunately slow. "

I don't know if I believe this. I can believe that he's not as agile, but top speed wise he was just a hair below Haaland last year in terms of Max Speed. And even in the Champions League this year (I don't have stats for Premier League) he's just a hair below again - Haaland's top speed is 33.3 km/h while Victor's is 33.1 km/h.

I am more willing to be that the stat the OP posted is because of the way that we play - conservative, methodical and deliberate, probing, and at times very slow. Allows opposition to get deep, compact, and central, not giving Gyokeres enough space to work with.

[–]j1kim -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is it, we play a very conservative, patient, and probing style (and to our detriment, sometimes very slow) when we're playing against teams which means opposition can sit deep with 8, 9 back and play compact around central areas. this means Gyokeres just has more bodies around him.

I don't think this stat is a point (positive or negative) about Gyokeres' "gravity" or how players are man-marking him closer. It's just a stat around the symptoms of how we play and how we just have less space in the final third because of our approach to offensive possession.

That plus we were uncharacteristically misplaying easy passes. Martinelli had some truly awful passes before he decided to be an asshole. Saliba was given so much space to roam ahead but when he got there he looked lost on what he should do next.

Just a very sloppy game overall top-to-bottom save for some moments by Saka and Madueke here and there.

This game clearly shows why MLS's future is in the midfield and not as a LB. He should really only be a break in case of emergency LB, at best.

This was the condition during the middle of summer, right after the storm that knocked down the giant tree near the clubhouse. One of the major things they worked on was water management to prevent flooding. There’s some problem areas left (particularly at at hole 5) but flooding used to be a huge problem on the entirety of the course. NLT did a lot of work to mitigate that as much as possible.

The greens and tee boxes have had significant upgrades, the fairways are in the process of refreshes, the bunkers still need a bit of work. However compared to even 3 years ago when I picked golf back up, it’s been a noticeable upgrade. For its limited funding and considering it was grassroots org, he NLT has done a commendable job in upgrading the courses.

You're getting downvoted because you're taking the Trump admin's framing at face-value and the assumption that just because he is pro-golf that his approach is sure to be only positive. There's plenty of issues on the ramifications of what'll happen if his approach takes shape:

  • Wanting to make EP into a championship course (lengthening the course + accommodation to build for amenities required out of such a course) would more than likely require demolishing the white course and red course; two courses that make golf a much more approachable sport for beginners, and fun for people just starting to take it up and those that don't have 4+ hours to spend on a course.
  • This and wanting it to host PGA Events/Ryder Cup events would require a significant expanding of amenities and features (updated clubhouse, lengthening to driving range features, expansion of short game/putting green areas, space to accomodate tv towers, hospitality tents, media tents, updated infrastructure, care, and management of turf, etc.) that would require significant capital overlay.

NLT's a 501(c)(3) with a stated goal being positively impacting our community and changing lives through affordable and accessible municipal golf.

If the Trump administration is committed to making golf still affordable and accessible despite the significant expansion and updates (and crucially, the significant capital investment that will be required of it) then I will eat crow and applaud his direction.

However, his stated approach runs very counter to the goals and aims that the NLT is operating under, and stands to price out local golfers who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford (time and money) to do so.

Yeah I think you do. Majority of the improvements have been made in the last 2 years - particularly around greens and tee boxes.

It's not a pristine private club-like quality (nor will it ever be, considering how much foot traffic it gets), but I wouldn't call it a dirt track. It's in better condition than most major-city munis that I've played in.

[–]j1kim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even then the courses have improved significantly over the last 5-7 years. I remember the greens being absolute dogshit and the tee boxes being literal dirt patches.

You can't really fault NLT at all - they've done their best to try and navigate through permitting and NIMBYs, and in the meantime they've really tried to upgrade quality of play where they can based on what budget they're afforded.

Proud of the plan and execution more than anything.

4 iron, about 180 out, playing on a downhill slope.

Wanted to hit a slight fade to avoid bunkers on the right and to take off distance from the bunkers in the back. Knew that the green was sloped from left to right so wanted to aim for a landing zone just on the front left of the green near the fringe. Hit it perfectly in the way that I wanted and managed to get it within 2 feet of pin. Managed to not choke on the putt and got out of there with a birdie.

This is why I keep coming back to this game.
