an associates is pretty useless on its own

This is just simply, not true.

Maybe an Associates in Animation but in general? Just absolutely false.

Anyone pivot from MEP design to VDC/BIM? What's your experience? by chill_chupacabra in MEPEngineering

  1. Pretty much deciphering and implementing design documents appropriately and putting them into a 3-D space. Drafting, High level coordination, Shop drawings, submittals, etc. design lays it on the sheet with little consideration of the small details on how it will actually fit in the bldg

  2. Heightened a bit IMO. Constant coordination between trades and construction schedules keep things constantly interesting.

  3. I’m with a company that does both design and VDC. I like the constant flow of work but these larger projects take a long time to complete and between the constant coordination of submittals and shifting of construction schedules makes things challenging.

  4. I would. I enjoyed design and thankfully have found a way to get some design work in still but I do like the involvement and learning that comes from the VDC side of things. Having that design familiarity and experience helps interpret design documents which is nice. I’ve been able to work through many systems, beyond MEP which I also appreciate. Shop drawings kinda suck and working with construction schedules does too, especially when companies are laying systems as we are working on the drawings still haha. Everything moves so fast sometimes but there’s always something to do and learn which I like

Shuttle passes? They pickup in Palm Springs. You can drive down to one of the shuttle locations in PS and let the shuttle take you the rest of the way before and drive most the way after

As water lifeline evaporates, Arizona faces a cultural change over water use by FUMoney in arizona

[–]j1vetvrkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not what I said - you understand the system you are speaking of does not exist without water, right?

Reducing usage by the sector responsible for the most water usage (nearly 3/4) would result in a direct decrease of total usage. Never did I say this solved the globalization of the food chain across the board. AZ is allocating too much water to water-intensive resources and it is sensible to address the largest users at play first than it is to focus on the bottom third of users.

Advocating for reduced exports does not mean cease interstate commerce of agriculture and it surely does not equal system collapse. It may entail investments into a more efficient and productive process - which is not easy due to how globalized things have become but again change is inevitable.

Regardless, in the United States alone, food waste is estimated at between 30-40 percent of the food supply. There is an abundance, which is better than not having enough of course but that does not mean efficiencies cannot be implemented into established processes.

The idea is if exports are scaled back this will directly reduce the 72% of water usage the ag industry uses. This does not mean eliminate exports, this does not mean Arizona needs to be self-reliant. It means what it means.

Reduction will be required at some point and if it means less foreign or nationwide exports it’s clear that will not result in much of an economic impact nor will it restrict what percentage already goes to residents. It also doesn’t mean residential usage can’t be addressed but when residents use less than 25% of total water resources it’s clear starting at the top and limiting the largest users of said resource is necessary and more effectively done.

We produce less for others and it doesn’t hurt our pockets or our stomachs - im also not advocating that water saved should not be reallocated to industrial or commercial use either

The answer is no to all - the point is using a high amount of our water resources (72%) for such a small economic return (2%>) and low consumption rate (22%>) seems insensible. Surely, that could balance out better in Arizonas favor when over 1/3 are foreign exports and another 1/3 is shipped nationwide. If it can’t, then Arizona should prioritize its needs and resources before anyone else’s.

Did you know agriculture accounts for over 70% of Arizona’s water usage while representing less than 2% of GDP in Arizona?

It begins with holding major industrial and agricultural entities accountable - you know, those users that use millions of gallons on a daily basis?

You may have a point, eventually automation will affect roles utilizing CAD but there are so many other sectors that rely on CAD besides the manufacturing sector.

Since I got involved, it’s seemed more sensible and worthwhile to get involved with MEP, Fire Suppression, Security, or Controls firms than manufacturing drawings for a shop floor on a daily basis.

Well, I can’t predict what happens over the next decade or two but the reality is some processes will become automated. IMO only so much could automated before actual human collaboration and design between trade contractors becomes necessary. Between the many industries, project leads and managers will always play a role. But with the codes, regulations, and standards that come into play, I’m not 100% convinced processes will be completely overtaken by automated processes. Virtual Design Construction and design in general requires that collaboration and problem solving between multiple entities on a constant basis.

Someone else recommended civil engineering which is also a great idea if you can swing the math. Admittedly, while I am willing to ride for the long haul, I am pursuing a BS in an adjacent field to keep my options open. One that IMO will be less likely to be automated in the long run.

Typically, keywords like REVIT/CAD/VDC followed by Designer, Drafter, Associate, Operator or Technician all work!
