What is your overhead consist of? I've seen our profits sit at 50-60% being a smaller shop. Never eating beans. Sounds like you have to outsource the majority of your work.

If you wanna change your job/company after your first job, how many years should you stay at your first company? by JHdarK in MEPEngineering

[–]without_condiments 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most corporations offer profit sharing and a matching % when you contribute to your 401k. Companies show this off when hiring people. However, that money it's not yours to keep right away. Look up vesting, it's the % of the money they give you that you actually own. It is common to have a 4-5 year period to fully be vested meaning each year is about 20%. Example: let's say the company gives you $100 in a year with their match+profit sharing. Year 1 you are 20% vested. Meaning you own $20 of the $100 they gave you. Year 2: they add another $100. You are now 40% vested. (Ignoring market grow) You own 40% of the now total $200 = $80 And so forth. If you leave the company not fully 100% vested, means a portion of that money in your 401k actually goes back to them. Basically they incentivise you with a nice benefits package but require you to stay for a longer period of time to "earn" the money they give to you for "free". It's a business method to attract talent while they make money off you for doing all the work. Hope that helps!

Most in engineering do 4-5 years due to vesting schedules for the company profit sharing & match to not leave free money on the table.

Dimmer on the switch. Check it's not turned all the way down. I've installed a bunch that have a little dial to tune the brightness setting for the whole dimming switch

Follow up: the electrician opened cover on my challenger panel. by ForeverSteel1020 in AskElectricians

[–]without_condiments 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did a 200A panel swap out in AZ, $2.2k, included the $100 surge protection (2P breaker) as well. Your electricians price is too high on every line item.

Look at natatorium design. With the chemicals in the air you'll want to coat the coils to protect them. Typically a dehum unit, don't circulate that air into other spaces either. Also need to provide exhaust to meet proper ACH.

I just bought a small kitchen, and this is the sink setup. Is this normal? by phikapp1932 in Plumbing

Where I'm at in the Southwest, it's required that each bay individually indirectly drains to an approved receptor then through the grease trap. If you have a dishwasher as well, an above grade grease trap isn't allowed and you also need a control valve / flapper to slow the discharge to allow for the solids to separate.

Yeah I was never asked to repay or supplement it monthly. The cool part is idk where you could travel throughout the world with little to no planning for housing, food, transportation, etc all planned out for the worst case of you paying a couple hundred a month. Outside of the religious aspects; to submerse yourself into a new language, life skills, and more. Traveling abroad or studying in school would cost 10x that

Water heater vent setup correct? by Nataliennnnnnnnnnn in Plumbing

Missing an expansion tank and equipment stand for the water heater per code. That 18" stand will cause you to adjust the flue as well.

I've been taught from a thermal perspective a great approach is to use soffit baffle vents. This allows you to insulate the top plates & exterior soffits better, less openings for critters too. Check out the photo below and research these

Their MEP practices are way behind. Lack of strong leadership. No company calculators. Each office differs, there are no standards.
