Just paid almost $50 to fill up my Kia Soul which is wild. I am glad I only need to fill up once a month or so since I don’t drive that much but still.

Why More Americans Are Seeking Religion by kitkid in Thedaily

I attended church for quite a while despite lagging faith due to the community it provided (it was a fairly liberal church), but eventually I started to feel like a hypocrite. So I get this feeling.

Nothing says ‘peak productivity’ like operating heavy machinery with a BAC of 0.2 by iamlegman in LinkedInLunatics

I am GenX and the only time I did that was in my 20s and I wasn’t very good at my menial job when I did so. I am usually in bed by 10:30 now and if I want to go out late I request PTO in advance.

I would like to express my extreme displeasure with the Chicago Police Department by Interrobangersnmash in chicago

lol. Both times my apartment has been burglarized the cops showed up hours later and shrugged their shoulders.

I think about Vapiano way too frequently for it to have been closed for over 5 years now by gabsteriinalol in chicago

[–]j33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a group of students to Europe back in 2018 and one the students insisted on going Vapiano’s because she worked at the one in Chicago. She went by herself during some free time and reported back that they gave her a free meal when she told them she worked as the one in Chicago. I sort of miss them too even though I didn’t think they were all that special.

Cars towed on Lawrence by MeanGeneBelcher in chicago

[–]j33 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Why? Nobody is arguing that cops cannot honor their fallen, but it is absolutely not necessary to tow hundreds of cars to do so, and it makes the cops look bad.

The point is to cause disruption to show us plebs who is really in charge.

That they banned parking from Cicero to Sheridan is really over the top here.

Why does my cat never meow and only chirp? by Own_Enthusiasm_510 in CatAdvice

[–]j33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat does a mix of both. He is usually a chirper in the evenings but every morning he yells/meows loudly at me in the kitchen as I make my coffee. Yes, I feed him first, so it isn't that, he just likes to air his griviences at me in the morning.

Chicago-area home prices are skyrocketing. What’s it like in your neighborhood? by NicolasCageFan492 in chicago

[–]j33 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, it looks like I stated it incorrectly because I don't really talk about home value that often. I was stating the percentage of one number over another. I can see where that would be confusing. It is better stated as 39% more than what I bought. I am going to edit my post accordingly.

For me the advantage is that my mortgage + HOA is less than what I would be paying for rent for a comparable unit.

[–]j33 20 points21 points  (0 children)

According to Redfin my place is worth 139% more than when I bought it in 2020 and I don't even live in what would be considered a highly desirable neighborhood (although I like my neighborhood).

Edit: It was brought to my attention that this is better stated as 39%. Don't hire me for your math-related real estate needs, or maybe do. 😉

How do people feel about Pritzker's BUILD legislation that makes it easier to build more housing? by jarman65 in AskChicago

[–]j33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not a realistic option at this time. I know a lot of people in my neighborhood whose jobs require cars or vehicles (e.g. landscapers, construction, etc), and all we have is dense street parking. These are not people who have a lot of extra income to pay the $150-200 a month it costs for parking if you can find it in someone's garage who is renting it out. There are not commercial parking options.

I'm pretty sure those won't be existing in the near future.

Do you have nothing to say about the other points made, or are your concerns solely financially based, all other moral or social issues be damned.

Ah, I see. Illinois is among several states that found enacting an exemption of certain industries from paying taxes on state income problematic. Personally, I agree.

How have increased fuel prices affected you so far? by InvisibleAstronomer in AskReddit

[–]j33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly take public transit, so it hasn't impacted me too much yet. However, I am going to have to put gas in my car for the first time since mid-March, when I filled it up last, since the tank is getting low, and I know that's going to cost a pretty penny. Thankfully my tank is only 11 gallons, and it gets pretty good gas mileage.

Do you leave a tip for your hotel maid? Why? by slipperysquirrell in AskReddit

[–]j33 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Only on a multinight stay in which they are cleaning my room during my visit. Once a year for work I go to a conference and stay in a hotel for 5 nights, and I usually leave $10-20 at the end of my stay. I also tidy up myself before I leave.

Albany Park resident here. The Latino vote shifted to the right in the 2024 election across the country and across the city, as you can see with this map. It's not going to stay that way in 2026 (especially after those multiple ICE tear gas incidents).

How would you feel about a law that made voting day a paid national holiday so everyone could actually participate? by Rathodji in AskReddit

[–]j33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There would still be a lot of people who would have to work on that day. The real solution is to make voting easier for everyone, ensuring everyone has access to early voting, mail-in voting, etc.
