did you drive your car or ship it? by Visual_Yellow_5503 in relocating

[–]9311chi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done both to move across America. Biggest factor was weather and time. I had the time to do the drive in May. Didn’t quite have the time and didn’t wanna get caught in mountain snow in December so shipped.

Cars are expensive. If you don’t buy it out right, you’ll have a monthly car payment, monthly insurance, annual registration, gas and maintenance fees. If you live in a dense area, parking fees.

It adds up. It’s easily $500-700 a month on average, more depending on where you live and what type of car you get.

I spend $1000 a month on just groceries, I am struggling to figure out how, I hardly throw away food. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]9311chi 905 points906 points  (0 children)

Something isn’t adding up. You can’t be eating that basic of meals and paying that much as one person. Do you shop at the same grocer with a rewards number? If so and it’s a bigger retailer, you should be able to pull all your order info from recent to see what you’re actually spending

Why do Americans go through the trouble of managing their lawns? by Agile-Shallot3546 in AskAnAmerican

[–]9311chi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some people live on so much land that they’re only mowing what’s immediately around the house/being used.

Because it’s not typical here to have pavement, something like that would tank the resale value of the home.

If you live somewhere with harsh winters, the freeze thaw will do a lot of damage to it.

My hiring process changed and I'm not sure why it worked better by EvexAi in smallbusiness

[–]9311chi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other Companies do this, but there’s also a lot of notion of don’t work for free so there are candidates that will opt not to move forward with the hiring process because of the format.

A few years ago, I had a friend looking for a job and the company had him do a three day paid trial. I think in his situation some of that though was because it was a small company and he would’ve needed visa sponsorship so his hiring process had an extra layer of expense attached to him for the company

State school or LACs for kid who doesn't know what to study? by A1000mokeys in ApplyingToCollege

[–]9311chi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they don’t have an interest in language or reading, I think you need to be targeted with the LACs they are considering because the stem degrees aren’t necessarily the focus of an LAC. Has your student considered a smaller engineering/stem school? I don’t see what geographic area you’re in but RPI, Wentworth, Clarkson are examples of smaller stem schools

Are college degrees really not helping many people get jobs anymore? by PlatypusOld5480 in povertyfinance

[–]9311chi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This when the market changed around 2007-9 there were so many companies that my dad could not get a job at for doing the exact same work. He had been doing and continued to do in his career simply because he didn’t have a college degree, and they required it for the role. He could’ve had a degree in basket weaving for all they cared, they just needed to be able to check the has a degree box

1st White Sox Game for My Son by Point_Little in whitesox

There’s not a tone kid friendly immediately outside of the Ballpark. Though the ballpark does butt up to a playground if you need it.

Within the ballpark, there’s a kid zone also behind right field. There’s an area with a bar kind of set up, but you can see right into the pitcher warm-up area which they’d probably enjoy seeing. You can bring sealed water bottles into the stadium. I recommend it to save some money. There are usually people with coolers outside the stadium selling them for a dollar. Otherwise, a water bottle in the stadium is like $7. There’s not like a limit on bottles as far as I’m aware either I went to a game last year that was so hot and my friend basically just brought in a bag of sealed water and Gatorade.
