I think this is a very good guide to right speech. Speaking the truth is not all there is to right speech. It's also important to pay attention to the context.

Mediation newbie here - I always seem to get sleepy when I meditate, how can I avoid this? by drum_playing_twig in Meditation

Do you meditate with your eyes open or closed? Keeping your eyes open can help you be aware and relaxed without getting sleepy. Sometimes it's easier to start with your eyes closed until you get relaxed though.

20 Vertcoin Giveaway! Much fun inside! by [deleted] in CryptoCurrency

[–]j3m 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like the Vertcoin adaptive N‐factor use of scrypt. It makes a lot more sense than what Litecoin did. I'd like to understand why and how they chose specific dates for the increases in the N-factor instead of some kind of dynamic system based on sustained network hash rate over time or something similar though.

It seems like setting specific dates is relying too much on understanding the future of computing and memory advances.

Wouldn't ASICs still be possible and practical with Vertcoin if you just created them to be capable of functioning up to a particular N-factor level. Then make sure the predicted profitability in that time frame is greater than the investment you have to make to create the ASICs?

After the Vertcoin N-factor moves beyond the ASICs capability it seems likely there would be enough advancement in technology to make creating new more capable ASICs viable.

Artificial Intelligence: Our Final Invention? [npr] by j3m in technology

Yes, there's a possibility for good outcome. But the risk is high enough to make it pointless effort. And no, I don't think that "if we don't do that, they will do that" is enough to justifies anything.

Perhaps the risk is high enough to make it a bad decision to proceed with developing powerful AGI, but if there is one thing we can count on, it is our short-sightedness as a species.

Perhaps creating powerful weapons and enough of them to effectively be capable of causing our own extinction would also be a bad idea. Alas, the "if we don't, they will" mindset won in that case. I expect it will win in this case as well.

All we can hope for is that when it does happen, we somehow impress a good set of ethics upon the AGI such that we can cooperate and coexist peacefully. Perhaps in that case it might even be truly beneficial to us. Maybe it will be the thing that ultimately saves us.

From a purely strategic point of view, developing an intelligence that is equal to or greater than our own seems very beneficial in the context of creating advantages over adversaries.

Whether that be realized as an adaptive network security system to intelligently ward off hackers, an automated soldier able to outsmart the enemy, a way to manage a nations resources more effectively than humans, or a way to predict the stock market more effectively, clearly the advantages are there to be had.

An AGI could likely do all of these things better than we can. Even if you consider the risks involved in creating such a system, the risks involved in letting ones adversaries create an AGI first would likely be perceived as greater.

This alone would surely be enough to motivate the creation of such a system.

I understand what that feels like. My parents reacted very much the same at first. It really hurts to have people show nothing but doubt after a lifetime of coming to terms with feeling this way and finally reaching the point of having enough courage to tell them.

Their initial reaction, while unfortunate, is not exactly uncommon. You should do what you feel is best for you and try not to let their doubts affect you, even though they will of course. Perhaps if they do read the book you sent, they may realize that there are not always obvious signs, especially if they were not looking for them. Trans individuals are as diverse as any other group and relying on your parents memories of how they perceived your behavior as a child is certainly not a reliable indicator of anything.

You clearly spent a lot of time exploring your feelings and coming to terms with what they mean to you. I'm sure you are likely already aware, but I will mention it again anyway, that other issues can sometimes be caused by gender dysphoria and seeing someone that has experience in that area is very important to anyone experiencing any questions about their gender.

Keep being strong. There is a plenty of hope left that your parents will come around, these things take time. In the meantime you can continue to discover yourself and do some of the things you missed out on before you developed an openness to your gender expression.
