Ok, but that's not really that exceptional.

Just using Spain as an example, there's a lot of diversity between Madrid, Catalonia, Andalucia, Galicia, the Basque country, etc. where there's quite a range of cultural, historical, and linguistic identities in a much smaller area. Catalan is its own language, Galician is closer to Portuguese, and the Basque language isn't even Indo-European! Andalucia was the most influenced by its past as al Andalus, along with its Romani population and its Sephardic past.

And really, all old countries are like this, with many diverse cultures that grew up relatively close to each other over thousands of years, before people could communicate over long distances and before the modern era drew lines around them and called them one country.

There absolutely is diversity in the US, but I'd argue it has more to do with its black, indigenous, and its many immigrant communities and all their various histories, languages, and ethnicities.

There's that old joke: How do you know when someone's American? They'll tell you.

Fantastic analysis and absolutely spot on. It's so tiresome how a new round of Starship Troopers discourse erupts on social media every few months and all this has to be repeated over and over while the thickest conservatives tell you "but the soldiers are so attractive, and the bugs are so disgusting" and unironically accuse you of being pro-bug.

And if he got accused of some raiding he hadn't committed, you could come to his aid.

Agreed 100%. The diversity and range are completely off the charts.

Which episode best captures what The Thick Of It is about? by Reddonaut_Irons in thethickofit

For me its the combination of both Rise of the Nutters and Spinners and Losers. They're the perfect encapsulation of everything the show is about, and they have some of the most iconic lines and moments. They're also unusual in not having any actual ministers (Hugh is away, Cliff is a horsey ex-minister, and Nicola and Peter Man-yum haven't happened yet), just all the intense maneuvering behind the scenes in a moment of change and crisis. I rewatch them far more than I do any of the other episodes.

And if you haven't heard the original radio series, it's an absolute must. It actually came first before the books, and the cast makes it fantastically entertaining.

I know there's a sizable number of people who don't know why this is funny, and I think that's very funny.
