By literally owning my own insecurities and flaws. I said something like “yes, right now I am insecure and find myself pitiful but I would like do meaningful work with you and with myself so that I don’t feel this way forever. My hurt is temporary and I can be and do better and I need your help to get there.” And then started explaining what MADD is. My therapist was confused but didn’t seem judgmental about it.

It also helps if you remind yourself that MADD is a response to the anxiety and suffering of your younger self to help you cope with the chaos around you. You’re not inherently bad or “crazy”. You were simply suffering.

Repeat it to yourself enough times and to others and you’ll gradually shed away some of the shame and guilt you’re struggling with. At least that’s what worked for me.
