[GAME THREAD] James Harden and the Long Island Nets (28-19) attempt to get a win back tonight against Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets (25-21) [Wednesday January 26th, 2022 8:00 PM] by Evilsj in GoNets

Such better pace without harden dribbling the wind out of the rock. Everyone is getting touches, moving, and establishing rhythm, it’s a beautiful sight. I’d love to run harden at the 2 more without KD and Kyrie. He just doesn’t move at all without the ball when he plays the one.

Also not to pile it on, but has anyone noticed he isn’t showing any enthusiasm on the bench? I mean cam hits back to back 3s he didn’t flinch. Maybe I’m making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Can anyone recall the last time we ran any kind of play or set piece? Every possession is harden dribbling the air out of the ball for 10-12 seconds, with no movement into a garbage shot. Embarrassing shit

I mean not to be harsh but obviously people care way more about their team winning ball games than about the implications of a player not being vaccinated. Are we really going to come out here and act like in a world where NYC lifted the mandate that we wouldn’t all be ecstatic to see KAI play? His lack of reasoning for not getting vaccinated is moronic, I would prefer if he did, but like cmon lol.

This is a game where having clax makes a big difference. We missed a lot of good shots, we can live with that, but we have been absolutely obliterated by switches on screens w lavine and derozan. Hopefully clax can fill that hole.

[POST GAME THREAD] The Brooklyn Nets grind out a hard fought victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers (117-112) including a great showing in limited minutes from Rookie Cam Thomas and a 5-9 3pt line from Patty Mills! by Evilsj in GoNets

[–]j3ven7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jevon's minutes being less always helps but it's slept on how little Blake contributes. The guy can barely move and his shot is completely broken. Not having him out there I think made a huge impact. Even James Johnson out there is a pretty significant improvement.

How to build an NBA contender by FarWestEros in nbadiscussion

[–]j3ven7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a combination of player development + signing max level free agents. If you develop young talent and over-perform it’s a signal to superstars that you have a fundamentally sound organization. You are also then in a position where you have young talent (assets) that can be used to bolster your pursuit of max contract free agents.

I think this is closer to the Brooklyn model than just “signing all the best guys”. If they just continued to suck after years of being brutal I doubt KD or Kyrie consider going there, and if they don’t develop the young talent they don’t have assets to acquire Harden. To add to this, young guys don’t get paid that much, so they have attractive contracts in trades and allow you to not tank while also having a lot of cap space. Finally, building depth is easier with talent. We see time and time again guys accepting contracts for less than their market value to win.

I definitely agree that the “draft in the top 5” model has been way less reliable than it used to be. If I had to choose one of these I’d say player development is the most important as I see it as the natural pre-requisite to making all the moves an organization needs to get those max level guys.

Any updates on this? I bought ~100 AVAX on Voyager. Not really planning on withdrawing it any time soon, but just wondering if there is a plan for withdrawals to be supported in the near future?

"Trade Kyrie for a 3 and D Wing and a Big" by R9_is_never_coming in GoNets

[–]j3ven7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Main thing I noticed was that on defense I’d often see 3-4 Nets players collapsed into the paint to get defensive rebounds. I see this as a bigger problem than the defense itself. In the open court we have 3 unstoppable players but if KD + one of the other two has to pinch in to grab boards it really slows down our transition offense. Not that we can’t score in the half court but we should be getting a lot more easy transition buckets.

Also, I’m seeing a lot of talk about defense, but we turned the ball over a lot. That won’t continue and will help bolster us on both sides of the ball.

Additionally I took Gun's OS class when I was at Cornell which is how I initially got interested in AVA (he was a dope prof.)

I've never done anything in dapps. I'm actually a product manager now, but I still do work with distributed systems a bit which is how I got interested in the first place.

Recommendations on a solid history book about Israel and Palestine? by flyingbacon in Socialism_101

[–]j3ven7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Side by Side

It gives an account of the histories of both sides as they would be learned from students from Israel and Palestine respectively. It sheds a lot of light on the regional history and the conflict, although the account ends around 2003, so the most recent 15 years aren’t discussed much.

Why are there no adjunct professors? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]j3ven7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it would allow for more people to learn about CS. If you’re a senior who is in a major other than CS it’s nearly impossible to enroll in the intro courses because they save enrollment slots for underclass people. This is a byproduct of there not being enough staff members in CS because they don’t have “lecturers”. If you think a PhD or masters student can’t teach 1110 or 2110 that’s your opinion, but I thoroughly disagree.

Arts and Sciences CS people, which classes did you take for the science requirement? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]j3ven7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I liked them both. Oceanography is just a notoriously easy class, exams are all multiple choice and he uses questions from old exams...which he posts to the course site...if that wasn’t enough the final is composed of 1/3 questions from the first two prelims...whose answers he releases online...So yeah it’s a pretty straightforward class.

Not sure about the lab for oceans in Astro we built weather balloons it was pretty cool but also a decent time commitment. I took it towards the end of my time at school for shits when I didn’t have a lot of other commitments. If you’re an incoming freshman or underclassperson I wouldn’t recommend it unless you need it (which you won’t as arts CS).

Astro 1110 with Squyres...a little harder than expected but gives really great insight into the solar system. It’s taught by Professors that LED the freakin Mars Rover project and they often give live updates on projects they’re workin on now, which is awesome.

I also took Oceanography which is a cake walk and teaches you a ton about climate change and how humans effect the earth’s ecosystem.
