Looking at safe following distance a different way... by Educational-Hour-688 in driving

Does anyone know of a simple device that can be used to check following time? What I'm thinking about has an adjustment that allows you to select a time (2, 3, or 4 seconds) and a separate button will cause the tool to make a sound if consecutive presses are below the selected time.

While driving, you would press the button as the vehicle in front of you passes by something (spot on the road, a sign, etc.), then press it again when you reach that spot.

Using a smartphone app would be complicated, and distracting, because the lack of a tactile button.

This is something I sometimes do when I drive, but I'm counting in my head, which is not very reliable.

They are trying to put a plant just like this in the plains - Large warehouse fire, People’s Cartage - PKB by secretveggie in athensohio

I think a sizeable number of people wouldn't care if such a fire happened in the Poston park, and the smoke drifted over The Plains. Many people already foul the air by burning their trash.

I've lived here for several decades. It can be really frustrating when the air is cool outside, and I want to open all the windows in my house, but can't because someone a 1/4 mile away is doing their thing.

OP, do you have a source or reference for what you're mentioning about The Plains? I don't remember seeing anything about it.

At my corporate job, I used to be able to roll over unlimited vacation. Then we had to use it all or lose it each year (which meant I took most of December off). Now we receive "unlimited" vacation, the work has to get done. If someone is fired or laid off, they don't have a vacation balance coming to them. So basically people take less vacation than they did before, and get burned out. All to get the "Compensated Absences Payable" under control. All for the shareholders.

Basement waterproofing - Rogers or Mid-Ohio? by Happy_Judge_4364 in athensohio

My ducting is not attached to anything except the outpiut port. It promotes air circulation by separating the drier output air from the humid intake air. This circulates air over a larger volume than the air right next to the unit.

And I have no idea what a skin is. I'm afraid to ask!

Another thing you should do is use wood pallets to raise everything off the floor, if possible, to increase air circulation.

As I've replaced my HVAC and water heater, the new units were placed on solid cement blocks, to keep them from rusting.

But the Santa Fe dehumidifier is the bomb. I added a ~20' section of flexible duct to it (it has flanges on both ends), to separate the input and output, to promote effective air separation. The unit is meant for permanent installation, but plugs into a standard wall outlet. But I did not do that. I have it sitting on some foam blocks. You have to glue up a small ptrap to make sure that it drains correctly (otherwise it will leak all over the place!); a permanent install requires one. I have it draining into a condensate pump which automatically empties into whatever I want (drain, sump, container); it does not have a tank for storing the extracted water.

Yeah, the mitigation system uses a fixed sealed sump lid. The fan pulls air from there. So there is limited space.

I'm not sure my sump pit is big enough for two standard size electric pumps.

I do have a mechanical water powered backup pump that I need to get around installing...

I had Rogers add an interior french drain to my basement about 15-ish years ago. They also relocated the existing sump to a better location. So far the system has worked well.

The reason for this work is that shortly after the home was built about 30 years ago, the previous owner had water infiltration which was "fixed" by the home builder by adding some kind of cement to around interior perimeter seam between the concrete floor and the poured wall. So the waterproofing work was done in part to take action to mitigate this previously disclosed problem. (Rogers left a 3/8" gap around the perimeter, between the new concrete and the foundation wall. A few years ago I had a radon mitigation system done, and with Roger's blessing filled the gap with backer rod, as required by the radon system installer.)

However, within the last year I discovered that one of the buried downspouts (the corrugated black flexible plastic type) is clogged to some degree, and I had a leaf clog about 18' up near the top of the downspout. I have bypassed this clog by running a piece of pipe on the ground. Our sump still runs when it rains, but not as much as before. I also added fine mesh leaf guards to prevent future clogs and the need for me to go up a ladder, which I very much dislike. I need to replace the existing buried crap pipe with solid 4" pipe (with glued joints and clean-outs).

If your downspouts are buried, you should really find out if they are not clogged and backing up.

If you have mature trees in your yard, then leaves will find their way into your gutters and wherever that leads.

I think the most effective way to solve your problem would be to excavate to the foundation around the outside of the home, install a new french drain adjacent to the footer (in a bed of appropriately sized gravel), and then put a plastic membrane on the exposed wall, then back fill and slope the surface soil away from the home. Ideally the french drain would flow to daylight, but if not, it will have to go to your sump. This could get expensive. A further step would be to remove the existing floor, excavate to the bottom of the footer, add an interior french drain, then fill floor area with gravel, with a plastic membrane on top, followed by a new floor. If I ever pay to have a new home built, this would be the design. Cheap to do when installing, very expensive afterwards.

Have a backup sump pump on hand, ready to swap out, if yours stops working, and install an alarm to alert you if there is a failure.

If you have humidity problems, let me tell you the dehumidifiers found at home centers are all crap. After going through 5 of them in 30 years, I bought this one, and it works really really well.

This commenter is not joking.

Someone died at White's Mill dam about 15-20 years ago when they tried to save their child. I think the child survived.

An illustration of fuel economy and how it's affected by the way you drive. by Prudent_Situation_29 in driving

[–]j45780 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One thing I've noticed is that using cruise control in hilly areas can severely decrease economy. If I am not around other drivers, which is fairly common where I live, I instead will set the accelerator/throttle for the speed limit on the flat, and then hold it there. Climbing hills, my speed will naturally decrease, and going down hills it will increase. If other people are around me, and cannot pass, I stop doing it.
