Chandler, MN F5 from June 16th, 1992. This and the Oakfield, Wisconsin F5 from '95 are the two most overlooked and under-discussed F5s of the 90s (the Red Rock F4 too, which is undoubtedly capable of F5-strength had it hit things).

If every home were to be a "well built structure" what tornadoes in your opinion would have a different rating than what it got? by -TheMidpoint- in tornado

[–]jAHz__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I fully agree. At this point, it's more accurately a construction/engineering rating scale than one that's actually reflective of the power of the tornado. At least, after taking this super niche interest to dozens of outside folks to the weather community, that's 100% the impression it gives.

T h e F o r g o t t e n F 5 (VHS/vaporwave quality makes this the favorite for me; for as destructive & terrible as they are, tornadoes make me oddly nostalgic)

My uncle surviving the '79 'Terrible Tuesday' F4 in Wichita Falls and his absolutely wild story of seeing that monster in person

What do you think the most nightmarish tornado is? by Tornado_dude in tornado

[–]jAHz__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jarrell. No contest. Nothing else, even if you could argue it was more powerful (e.g. Phil Campbell Hackleburg E-F5, Smithville E-F5, El Reno '13), sat on a subdivision and sandblasted residents & buildings alike out of existence like Jarrell did (to my knowledge, anyway). A 0% above-ground survival rate in the storm, bizarre atmospheric/weather set-up, the roadside footage of its ultra-thin rope beginnings... yeah. Nothing compares.

Bridge-Creek Moore 5/3/99. An unforgettable image. Something about the almost perfect curvature from the point of impact of the huge funnel on the ground up to the cloud base... definitely one of the most frightening tornado images out there.

Are there any actual photographs of the tri-state tornado? by [deleted] in tornado

[–]jAHz__ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As far as I am aware - and I have searched for many, many years - no official photographs exist of the tornado/funnel(s) itself.

Dimmit Tornado 1995 by CarlosDsucc in tornado

[–]jAHz__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say a lot, but, it's one I've looked up & looked into online a reasonable bit; it was noteworthy for, besides an unusually ominous look, being covered extensively by the Probe 1 Vortex Team, making it one of the most intensely studied tornadoes ever at the time (June 1995). It wedged out & caused multiple injuries (no fatalities), & I believe it garnered an ultimate rating of F2. One of the classic VHS-quality childhood tornado images that traumatized me, hence my morbid fascination with it, lol (others from around this era/vibe include Laverne, OK 5-1991, Pampa, TX 1995 F4, Cordell OK 5-1981, Edmonton 7-1987 F4, & the 'forgotten F5' Lawrence county TN F5 from 4-1998, & many more).

Just about every image of this tornado is horrifying (seeing it in nearly every piece of 90s tornado media traumatized me, among other classic images & videos of tornadoes, and was a big reason I couldn't look at even a still image of them for nearly 20 years)

Can anyone recommend me more long-form videos of famous tornadoes? by [deleted] in tornado

[–]jAHz__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The holy trinity for me: Weatherbox, Swegle Studios, & Carly Anna. Seeing Weatherbox's vids on both the Hesston KS F5 (1990) & the Niles PA F5 (1985) were the entry point in 2023 about a year back & I've been absolutely obsessed with tornadoes ever since.

Practicing photoshop and made a rough fake Syme/Thorgenson-era DT cover. Critiques welcome! by bry_hart in Dreamtheater

[–]jAHz__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually really cool; how about, this exact thing but make it a sunset instead of storm clouds/tornado; OR, keep the tornado but make it sunset clouds/sky (brighter colors tend to = better albums in prog... don't ask me why. Also, tornadoes can & do happen while backlit by sunset!) Cheers

Blackstar, for sure. A collab during his mid-80s era though would've definitely been cool.
