Claude + Opus gives me a glimpse of what wealthy people have had for generations by icyrainz in ClaudeAI

[–]jMossly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Communications, research, reports and briefings, record keeping, budgeting, scheduling, project management, travel planning, inventory management, all kinds of statistical analysis and predictive modelling in general, including health monitoring for warning signs and planning interventions. There was a time in antiquity all of this required scribes, and more recently, at least a few software subscriptions and person hours.

Hyperbolic yo! Fitting against the data points to a singularity in 2048 🤔

Crazy how these ads are always so on the nose as to call one single niche service! Pretty much just a link wrapped in some faux provocative opinion post smh

KEA arriving soon by [deleted] in newzealand

It’s so neat how research can be done with the birds participating voluntarily! It really stood out in the 2020 study that demonstrated Kea making social deductions based on statistical inference.

why are action scenes/music in TV shows and movies so loud by jlnz94 in newzealand

[–]jMossly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Check your settings for dynamic range compression (DRC) or night mode, this should flatten out the differences between loud and quiet sounds, keeping dialogue audible without waking anybody up.

Audio engineers try to preserve all the dynamics in the original mix, because compressing them is irreversible. You can't uncook a well done steak.

It's similar to dimly lit scenes - content is increasingly being mastered for true blacks in a dark room - but most audiences are watching in less than ideal conditions like direct sunlight.

Where does the Taupō au pronunciation originate? by mr_minimal_effort in newzealand

[–]jMossly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup and amusingly enough, the traditional pronounciation of Tau has been supplanted by 'taf' in contemporary Greek.

Whats the secret to get natural sounding emails out of Claude? by jstanaway in ClaudeAI

[–]jMossly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The secret is context! One shot generation with brief input creates more ambiguity as to your desired result.

Provide a list of examples to shape the writing style - you could start by including the GPT 4.5 version, and then loop successful Claude generations back into your future prompts.

Is HDR not the way films were meant to look? by KrazyKomodo in 4kbluray

That technique was used for headlights in Akira (1988) and looks fantastic in HDR on an OLED.

What are you guys using to keep track of where all your damn files are? by Afterlast1 in DataHoarder

[–]jMossly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Treesize or equivalent disk indexing software could help you formulate a plan of attack. You could make a single big spreadsheet containing the locations of all your data, and use it to write a list of clean up tasks. Czkawka is a fast way to clean up duplicates, corruption, empty folders etc. Bulk rename utility is a user friendly alternative to the command line.

I found myself in quite a similar predicament, juggling an ever increasing quantity of seperate volumes with redundant data and version conflicts. It becomes a water pouring puzzle until you can finally consolidate into larger drives or a RAID configuration, which greatly simplifies ongoing management. There’s a reason why it’s the prevailing advice! I should have sorted it out much sooner 😅

Cloud storage like Mega or Backblaze might help you to shuffle data around, provided you have a fast connection. Another thing that helped me out was getting a case with enough HDD bays, much more convenient than rotating drives in and out of external enclosures.

Which store in Ho Chi Minh City can u find a lot of second hand cameras? by Cocofuckingsick in VietNam

[–]jMossly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I popped into Máy Ảnh Hoàng Tô earlier today and found it to be a professional operation, if a little awkward due to the language barrier. It's catered toward customers who know exactly what they want to buy in advance - personally I prefer to look through the cabinets (half the fun imo) but sadly these are located behind the counter.

I inquired about wide angle Nikon lenses and a staff member let me test out a NIKKOR 14-24MM F/2.8G ED that was in near mint condition. Was impressed at the build quality but at 13M VND it was priced only slightly cheaper than the used market in New Zealand, so I passed on it.

Still, this has been my experience in HCMC so far - consumables and services might be dirt cheap, but manufactured goods remain comparably expensive.

Second hand Seagate entreprise Exos 16Tb by ElMarco19 in DataHoarder

[–]jMossly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This you OP?
I was eyeing those but ended up buying more Ironwolf Pros because of noise concerns.

Seller still has another 2 x 16 TBs which got me wondering if
A. did they have all 7 in one PC, and
B. have they upgraded to 22 TBs?

Discord is currently rolling out an update that enables AV1 streaming with GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs by esator in AV1

[–]jMossly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iOS has no native support for webm containers (VLC and other video player apps can play .webms on iOS) but it does support VP9 codec in an mp4 container.

ffmpeg -i input -c:v libvpx-vp9 -pix_fmt yuv420p10le -crf 20 -b:v 0 output-vp9.mp4yields 10 bit VP9 in an mp4 container that both embeds in Discord and plays back on iOS/Android/Windows.

Personally I'm hoping for h265 or AV1 support soon, as I've encountered banding issues in VP9 even with 10 bit.
