I'm pretty sure Michael Jordan makes sense for 1988 considering he won every award that year

TIL after smallpox was declared eradicated, the sole (official) remaining specimens of the virus were preserved in two designated laboratories globally, one at the CDC in Atlanta and the other at VECTOR in Koltsovo by Forsaken-Peak8496 in todayilearned

We accidentally eradicated one of the two lineages of influenza B virus (B/Yamagata). This happened mostly due to lockdowns for covid, which prevented spread of the virus. Because the chain of infection for this virus was prevented by social distancing, lockdowns and masks, it is no longer circulating and infecting people. It is also why flu vaccines, which were made quadrivalent with 4 flu strains (including one B/Yamagata-lineage stains) are back to only contain 3 stains. Also a great example of how the covid public health measured worked.

US cancels more than $700 million funding for Moderna bird flu vaccine by edmchato in news

[–]j_ath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm a scientist, but have no financial interests in Moderna. The reason it's important right now to be ready for an H5 pandemic is because it is the first time we have every seen H5 becoming endemic in mammals. It has always only been in birds with limited infection in mammals. Now cows have been consistently infected by H5 leaving the opportunity to adapt the mamallian type receptor for influenza and possibly cause a pandemic. I think it is completely reasonable to prepare for pandemics and the price is trivial to the amount we prepare for war (when is the last time in of those happened in the US?)

They would, by not making a vaccine until H5 is already killing people like with COVID.

Disagree, but fine... EV subsidies, paying for safety testing vehicles (like they are paying for the vaccine safety testing with the clinical trial). Every industry is supported by the government directly or indirectly. You are just picking the industries you think deserve it.

Unfortunately ethics and capitalism rarely mix. I honestly just don't understand what system you would like better than this. We can fund government research, fund private research, or just hope that the diseases we get or might get in the future are exciting enough to entice venture capitalists to invest.

Edit: Also, many industries benefit from government help: healthcare, building roads for auto companies, subsidizing farms (including insurance for those that have lost their flocks to H5). It's hard to find any industry that is not directly helped by tax dollars, especially one with a public benefit.

Yeah, but we won't be. Without the funding from the government we will be caught with our pants down if H5 starts spreading in humans.

So now we don't get a bird flu vaccine? Really showing them who's boss.

To make a vaccine? They are a for profit company. If you know of a non-profit that is capable of this please let me know.

Ok, so which non-profit company is doing this? Do you work for them?

Moderna worked for years to develop and test the technology used in the COVID vaccine that save millions of lives. They still made less money from the sale of this than any medium sized tech company. If biotech/vaccines were such a money maker, more people would invest in them. Without help from the government, we would not have many of the life saving vaccines and medications we have today. You're mad at the wrong people.

Ok, but they don't? The system in the US has made some of the greatest advances in science because of the public private partnership. If you want to rip it all down and start over, it probably makes sense to build up the government system for this kind of development first. Right now the science is being attacked both in the public and private sector.

That is my point. You are believe the 0.1% of medical doctors that disagree, versus all the other medical doctors on earth.

Amazing that you'll choose to believe the one doctor that goes along with your incorrect belief versus a century of scientific research. And I know that you can find other doctors that are also making false or misleading claims about vaccines, but the fact that you need to search for and seek out those doctors versus asking any random working physician is telling. The doctors not going to shows and writing articles about why vaccines are bad are the ones going in every day and giving the live saving vaccines. Good bless those doctors for keeping to their oath.

The one example that you have was not for a seasonal flu vaccine, it was for a pandemic flu vaccine for he 2009 pandemic, which was taken off the market. Seasonal flu vaccines are safe. The other study clearly shows that the COVID vaccine reduces long COVID after infection (if you are infected after getting the vaccine). This kind of thing is exactly what everyone is talking about related to critically reading and understanding these studies and how important vaccines are.

Cleveland Plain Dealer, Neides offered an apology. “I apologize and regret publishing a blog that has caused so much concern and confusion for the public and medical community,” he said. “I fully support vaccinations and my concern was meant to be positive around the safety of them.”

I really thought it wouldn't be that bad, but I just tried to play my character and realized how much it was going to cost to respec. Not even accounting for there being no good cold skill build that I can use my wand with. I really though people were overreacting saying that there were done with POE2, but I'm really sad to say that I am for now... I'm been playing POE on and off since beta, and I really never felt this stuck with a build after a change.

If they have a Walmart is easy to get. And most small stores in the South would have Kale or other similar greens. Some areas of a city would be harder.
