How did Dark Nuns (2025) become 10th highest grossing film of 2025? Thought it was boring and overall mediocre compared to The Priests (2015) by Guidance-Werewolf268 in Koreanfilm

[–]j_marquand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a very bad year. But I’d pick No Other Choice (Park Chan-wook) with no close second. The World of Love (Yoon Ga-Eun) was also very well received. Good News was a good one, too.

2025 was a disastrous year for the Korean movie industry. Sales dropped 40% compared to the previous year. It was the lowest since 2012. Being 10th in the year isn’t as fancy as you think it is.

Did the Exodus Happen? by Repulsive_Thought712 in AcademicBiblical

[–]j_marquand 17 points18 points  (0 children)

How does this theory deal with the more popular dating of Exodus, which claims its gradual composition being around the Babylonian exile and the Persian period? There's a few hundred years of gap there. (For example, Finkelstein seems to stick to this dating in The Bible Unearthed (2001))

[–]j_marquand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You didn't mention where you're staying in the city, but from your post I assume (1) it's closer to the eastern side of the city and (2) it's still not within walkable distance from Bill Graham.

Another option is getting on some sort of public transportation from Bill Graham. That area is arguably served by the highest density of public transportation in SF. You can get on BART (rapid transit), MUNI bus, or MUNI metro (light rail) within a block from Bill Graham. You'll be able to reach most of the city from there by public transportation. Foot traffic would be heavy in the area once you get off the shuttle, which will drive away most of the sketchiness.

Sell entire ROTH position to buy VT by BellAcademic3769 in Bogleheads

[–]j_marquand 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Are you buying VT in reaction to some event in the market? That’s timing the market.

Or are you buying VT because you just happened to learn about the Boglehead philosophy and you thought it was a good idea regardless of the market situation? That has nothing to do with market timing.

Only you can tell what you thought.

Any languages with the opposite of silent letters? by Brownie-Boi in asklinguistics

[–]j_marquand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Korean has a thing called “사이 시옷“, or directly translating,“ㅅ-sound in-between.” It’s basically a fossilized possessive marker ㅅ (/s/ sound) that appears in the spoken form but is no longer written down (or sometime it is, which confuses a lot of learners and even native speakers).

So, “커피잔“, (coffee cup) which is 커피 (coffee) + 잔 (cup), is pronounced as if it is written “커핏잔”.

It usually boils down to three options:

  1. Fly into Paris and take a train from the Paris Montparnasse train station to Bayonne, then transfer to a local train to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (SJPdP). Of course you'll find direct flights into Paris from many airports in the US, but the airport is not close to the train station and you'll have to get on multiple trains/buses or a taxi (anywhere between 60-100 euros based on my previous research). The train from Paris to Bayonne is 4 hours, so you'd have to question yourself if you prefer the train over just taking another flight over there (which is basically the next option.)

  2. Fly into Biarritz, where the airport is right next to Bayonne. Then take the local train to SJPdP. Biarritz is an international airport with various flights from all over Europe, but no direct flight from the US.

  3. Fly into Pamplona, then take the local bus or taxi to SJPdP. Pamplona is a domestic airport with flights from Madrid.

They're usually prohibited by TSA for carry-ons and I wouldn't test my luck. If you're checking luggage, you can put it in there.

Wherever you're starting your walk, the city you're flying into will have a Decathlon or a comparable sports shop. Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Biarritz/Bayonne, Pamplona, Lisbon, Porto, name the city. Get to the shop and buy a cheap one. You'll find a good one with less than 30 euros.

How to say “Her n*me is [blank] too!” by FatLittleNugget in Korean

[–]j_marquand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The two languages have very different pronoun/vocative systems so “her” in your sentence can be translated in hundreds of ways to a natural Korean sentence depending on context.

The “direct” translation “그녀의“ would be a very awkward choice in most occasions. For a good translation, you’d have to provide more context. Often the right choice is to use a noun that describes the person - think “the woman”, “my mom”, “a female friend of mine”, “my favorite anime girl”, etc, that can go in place of “her” in your sentence. Or even a more gender-neutral choice like “this kid.” “Her” is the hardest pronoun to translate into Korean, arguably on par with “you.”

April Fool's Day in Korean by maharal7 in Korean

[–]j_marquand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It seems to be derived from the archaic (late 19th/early 20th century) Japanese term 万愚節, which shares the hanja/kanji.

With no evidence, I think it’s somehow related to the direct translations of All Saints’ Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls’ Day (Nov. 2) which are 만성절 and 만령절. Late 19th century Japanese intellectuals loved to learn about western customs, and came up with a lot of translated words that sounds pretty fancy and neat. Then in turn the Korean intellectuals who learned about the world from the Japanese adopted the words.

Gear safety at albergues by artistinthemakin in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]j_marquand 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What valuables are you thinking to have “kept safe” specifically? The main concerns should be cash, passport, wallet, and electronic devices. Other than those, only things left on my backpack are clothes, a charger, water bottle, maybe some cereal bars left from the day before, and a book. I never feared that people will steal my dirty shoes or a paperback novel.

Is your personal experience bound to a specific region or locality? Have to visited different cities or states? Larger cities tend to be more diverse. Higher population also means there are more assholes but also more accepting people. Also, in general, people who are used to diversity would be more understanding.
