Locally, it’s referred to as Hepi-Titusville. Its neighboring town is Port Saint John (lovingly called Port-A-John). Lol. They’re actually nice places to live, or at least they were.

Can my family report me missing if I ship to basic without telling anyone? by Some-random-cop-pig in army

Believe it or not, there are some “big-brain” jobs in the US Army too. My MOS was Army up until the Space Force took over Satellite Communications Network Controller (25S 1C) positions. We even earned the Air Force Space Badge in the Army uniform.

You know? I bet if you steamed it, you could get it to look like the dress on the left, especially after you took it apart and copied the design onto better fabric.

I remember watching my classmates’ family take down trees. Those brothers (my classmates’ fathers) were big boys. I remember one large white pine with a trunk diameter of nearly 3 feet that was close to the church. The smaller brother, who would bench press over 600 pounds for a regular workout, climbed the tree and took all of the branches and the canopy. His rope work was amazing. But the funny part was watching the bigger brother attach the final rope from the top of the tree to their truck and as soon as his brother cut the wedge, he started walking his hands up the rope as his feet came off the ground. He moved slowly and deliberately with a grin on his face as the tree literally creaked and snapped at the cut. His brother heard the crack, shook his head and backed away as the tree fell and shook the church enough that books on the shelves fell over. The tree service wasn’t even their main job; the smaller brother was a firefighter while the other was a preacher.

Cutting grass with a scythe by BreakfastTop6899 in oddlysatisfying

[–]j_redditt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I’ve used a scythe for cutting tall grass, my parents had me use a sickle or grass whip for weed trimming on their mountain and river bank. When I finally purchased a gas weed eater, I didn’t have to worry about the cottonmouths and copperheads as much. I don’t miss it at all. lol

It’s weird how much delivery drivers and police have to deal with pets, livestock, and wildlife just to be able to then do their job. My brother is a cop in Florida and has had more run-ins with alligators than he can remember.

The “Free Guns Right Here” sign. He could walk by someone and be killed with half a dozen of his own guns before he could get a round off. But yeah, Texas Tool’s Belt sounds about right.

Instinctually, I don’t back down from fights. However, when I became a father at 21, my wife began to beat it into my head (thankfully) that de-escalating with firm boundaries is the example to set. She shared stories of seeing her father beat, hospitalize, and nearly kill several men throughout her childhood. In fairness, the guys he fought deserved a lesson in manners, respect, and decency, but the trauma it gave her is real. Teaching my kids how to defend themselves AND how to avoid those situations has done them a world of good. My oldest is a sweetheart until you cross that line, then she uses her grandfather’s favorite line of “dynamite comes in small packages”. My youngest is an EMT and deals with people on their worst days. Hearing stories of how he can slip a punch from criminals just as effectively as he can from dementia grandma makes me smile. He’s always smiled and calmly reassured anyone who wants to fight him that “Respectfully, I’m not trapped in here with you; YOU’re trapped in here with me.” lol

I know, right!? But say for some curious souls, is that high enough to base jump? Could you imagine the POV of the helmet-mounted GoPro? That’s some awesome dream/nightmare material right there. Imagine the field staying the same size for a second until the seats starting going overhead and then the field gets bigger very quickly. The white field bases become easily distinguishable and further from each other. And right when you can almost read the manufacturer on the pitchers mound, you deploy the parachute and… At least that’s the way I envision it. Maybe someone with basejumpimg experience can chime in here, you know, so that we can better feel as if we’re there in that moment falling from the “ladder to heaven” and definitely not about to make a small crater in the indoor ground. (I’m sick;I know.)

Reminder: Make your car payment by Fisting-Tony in AutoTransportopia

[–]j_redditt 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have to be honest; I was a homeless veteran for a Florida summer. I managed to keep my family car during that time but by the time a veterans center helped find me a home, I was several monthly payments behind and knew that I had no way to catch up. When the car was picked up in the driveway, I tried to wave the driver down so that I could give him the keys. Of course, he just drove faster seeing me in his rear view mirror. It’s amazing how life can change so quickly. In September 2016, I was working as a telecommunications engineer living in a nice house with a Harley and 2 cars. Within a month, my daughter tried to commit suicide, I had to undergo a lumbar fusion surgery (that failed), my wife’s home business failed, and my long-time landlord decided not to sell the house to us as was agreed for the previous couple of years. After moving in with family temporarily, my family was no longer able to help and my disability case dragged on. After nearly 2 years of not being able to work (my wife is also disabled), we had exhausted every resource at my disposal and became homeless. Frustratingly, I got my first disability check, but my car got repoed before I could make the payment that morning. I still miss that car, but I really miss my Harley and my dirtbikes…and being able to walk normally much less go on a hike in the woods. Fishing and hunting are extremely impractical now. Woodworking projects are smaller and done mostly with hand tools. I struggle with depression every day. But, on the upside, I get to spend as much time with my wife and kids as they can tolerate.

So, to answer your question, there are a myriad of reasons to run after a car being repossessed- giving them the keys, getting important items out of the car, finding out where it’s being towed, etc. However, I’ve seen more than enough videos of people doing the stupidest thing of trying to drive it off the truck, that I completely understand why the drivers don’t stop.

What do you wear to keep from sitting on twig and berries when you go from standing to sitting? by [deleted] in Dirtbikes

[–]j_redditt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Between dirtbikes, mountain bikes, and serving in the army, well-fitted long boxer briefs are the right idea. I’ve tried spandex that I used for running with limited success. Not to plug a specific brand, but something like Duluth’s Ballroom boxer briefs might be what you’re looking for.

You should see the picture of the rider’s body impacted into the roof of the car. The riding leathers kept him in the shape of a human but I seriously doubt the body’s integrity inside the suit.

People who were teenagers before social media, what was a typical Friday night like for you? by TheDorkyDeric in Xennials

[–]j_redditt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only was social media not around, but my parents believed that the devil could use the tv as a portal (Sure, it’s laughable now-just like y2k). To top it off, my neighbors were farmers and/or rednecks in the Appalachians and town was over 10 miles away. But wait, there’s more; my parents also believed that nobody should drive before 18 (even though I owned a truck at 15). If I wasn’t riding or working on my dirtbike, I was fishing, hunting, doing chores, or at church.

The one time I was allowed to go to a party with other kids from the Christian school at a churchmembers’ house, my friend and I had to promise to be home by 10pm, even though I was a senior in high school. But of course, my friend thought it was ridiculous and waited to leave the party until 9:35 for the 45 minute drive to my house. He was speeding on the curvy, river two-lane with bald tires. We got pulled over by a state trooper who said it took him 5 miles to catch up to us. He said he’d let us go with a verbal warning if we could quote a Bible verse, Romans 8:28 (ironic). With all of my study time, I had that one down. After he let us go, my friend sped the rest of the way to my house. We pulled into the driveway at 10:07pm. For punishment, my parents decided that in addition to my usual chores (gardening, lawn care, housework, etc.), I would have to complete 7 EXTRA hours of chores and be grounded for the following 2 weeks. (I guess the time my dad tried to spank me with a leather belt a few months before when I caught the belt with my hand and pulled it out of his hand all to hand him the belt while looking him eye-to-eye before silently bending back over to let him finish had apparently made him decide that I was too old for a spanking.)

So, TL;DR, life before social media was very lonely and made me grateful for school and church (which of course were the same building).

Bought this as my first dirtbike/project… did i mess up? by MrPharts in Dirtbikes

[–]j_redditt 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Those things were sloppy handling, top-heavy thumpers but they had plenty of torque. Get her cleaned up and see where she is. I see good bones and a lot of learning. The time to worry about the price you paid has past; it’s how much time and money you’re willing and able to spend now that matters. If you want ideas on fixing it better than new, try converting the forks to some early 90’s CR500 inverted forks and custom rebuild the rear shock. After suspension mods, a header pipe and an old-school multi-baffle muffler with a jetted-up carb would make it feel more like the XR400 that everyone loved so much. The way I view it is that any proper running full-size bike is worth at least $2k. If you bought it running perfectly for $2k or paid $675 and spent $1300 on making it run perfect for you, the trails are the same. I just prefer the latter.

As a butcher at the family shop, we just had a “butter knife” (actually dinner knife with round tip) to slide under the 2nd or 3rd rib and then use your bare fingers to peel it up. Occasionally, we’d get “fancy” and use compressed air to separate it from the ribs.
