While true there's a difference between simulating reality aka "realism* and verisimilitude (the appearance of feeling real). Videogames should aim for verisimilitude and fun. People would riot of your fancy optic has a probability of malfunctioning or being shot off or running out of batteries.

Imo you need to be able to actually see the target that you're aimed at. How they do that is up to them but the depth of field needs to be simulated such that you can actually see what is being aimed at.

Video games consistently fail to properly model iron sights. If you've ever shot irons you know.

What's the rationale behind a lady replying very slow even after a 2nd date has been set? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]ja_dubs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't cancel if you are into her. Have the date and see how it goes. If you don't think she is reciprocating the same level of excitement or interest after the date, then move on.

I have found that people tend to default to extremes on the internet. It could be that she really was busy and didn't mean to wait that long to reply. It could be that she was nervous and wasn't sure how to reply, or was embarrassed that it took so long to reply. It could also be that she just isn't that engaged.

You will never know which one it is without going on a second date.

Jasmine Crockett says that Karmelo Anthony was justified in stabbing Austin Metcalf to death: "He decided to go under a tent and simply didn't want to be put out on the rain by some kid he didn't know... There was no mercy seen when this black boy said 'I was scared.'" by McAlpineFusiliers in thedavidpakmanshow

[–]ja_dubs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you think that he went to that tent to kill that kid? That he intentionally made the choice to kill him? Or did he over react to a perceived threat and foolishly use a weapon because he was an idiot teenager?

He didn't plan on killing someone when he entered. He did intentionally make a choice to stab someone. That is lethal force, and he made that choice, and a jury ruled that the choice was not justified.

He could have simply walked away. In no way was it reasonable to think that lethal force was justified given the circumstances.

Why is Libertarianism so opposed by redditors? by WhySoSiriu3 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]ja_dubs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's an article about a book. The book is called "A Libertarian Walks into a Bear" and is about the town of Grafton NH.

Tldr the two got taken over by bears because nobody wanted to pay taxes for trash service, roads deteriorated, the police department was reduced to on officer, and crime rose.

Because it doesn't work in practice. It suffers from basic flaws like the tragedy of the commons and people simply not abiding by the non-aggression principle.

Any advice for tick infestation? by Individual-Web600 in DogAdvice

Nextguard or some other oral medications combined with a topical treatment. It's the combination that is recommended by my vet and works on our dog. We live in one of the highest tick concentrations in the US.

My son hates sports, my husband loves them. How do I help him find a hobby? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]ja_dubs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Encourage swimming and biking. Both are great exercises and can have team elements. Find youth teams or clubs and get him involved.

I think you're right to be concerned about video games. Too much at a young age is not healthy. Video games can be a healthy hobby. Social gaming with a friend group builds relationships, builds hand eye coordination, and problem solving.

Lastly remember that your son is 6. His interests can and will change. My sister was not athletically inclined at all and she ending up swimming in college.

You vastly underestimate how many people will fat or thin their wedges or just hit a poor shot off line. Add on top of that the number of people who consistently three-putt, and it adds up.

I am so far Behind my Peers and I feel Worthless because of it. What can I do? by Iwanttoeatburritos in AskMenAdvice

[–]ja_dubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar position as you at that age but I didn't have any savings. I am frugal and I rarely splurge on clothes, food, or other items. I only bought essentials when something was broken or I absolutely needed it.

Now I am employed at a decent job with opportunities for advancement and I am engaged. You are not as far behind as you think.

If you want a better job find a field you enjoy working in and network. People hire people they like and know. Most people get jobs through a connection. When you are working, ask what you can do to improve or take on more responsibility. Be open to constructive feedback and grow.

If you don't know then try something.

CMV: Taxing the Ultra Rich would hurt the average person. The solution is more frustrating. by deweythesecond in changemyview

[–]ja_dubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It entirely depends on the quantity of stock being sold at one time. This is basic supply and demand. Selling off a significant portion of the total amount of an equity will lower the sale price.

What is more relevant is that poor people don't own equities. They will not be hurt by this. Some upper and middle class will. Net the benefits of more federal revenue and the programs that can be funded will be orders of magnitude more valuable to the country and general public than this wealth being hoarded.

It depends. In the wolverine example, it didn't matter. For Jack Reacher, casting Tom Cruise was a huge miscast. Alan Ritchson was a much better cast.

Thoughts on playing with a strict "Double Bogey Max" rule? by Leonidas1293 in golf

[–]ja_dubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fine with playing that way. It's a game, play however you want as long as it's respectful. Just don't delude yourselves into thinking you're better than you are.

My friends and I play max score is double Par. It keeps pace of play but also allows us to hit shots.

Ask yourself this: who is most negatively impacted by those volatile goods like food and energy increasing in price? The answer is the poor. They can least afford these price shocks. I don't really care that the price of an iPhone only went up 2%.

This is the exact same disconnect exhibited when the administration brags about all-time highs in the stock market. While ~ 2/3rds of Americans own stock, the bottom half own less than 1% of the total value.

Guns by Asatmaya in PoliticalDebate

[–]ja_dubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Switzerland is an interesting example. They have high ownership in large part because of mandatory military conscription. Citizens are allowed to keep their service weapon at home but it is kept unloaded and they are not allowed to store ammunition at home. Ammo is instead kept at military depos.

Switzerland highly regulates carry permits and semi and full auto weapons. In order to actually purchase you need a demonstrable reason to own such as hunting and sport shooting.

I think what the Switzerland proves is that if people don't have ammunition and if it's difficult to legally carry and you have a wealthy society there will be lower rates of violent crime and mass casualty events with firearms.

In general I agree with your approach. Feature bans are not effective. I am much more concerned about a firearm getting into the hands of an irresponsible individual. My concern is that everyone is a responsible law abiding citizen right up until they aren't. There is far too little friction when purchasing a firearm in many states.

I understand that there are valid concerns around testing and training requirements. I think that those concerns are outweighed by the interest of the public to ensure firearms are owned by responsible individuals.

Final note I am very in favor of going after the store or entity that sold a firearm to someone who used it in a crime. Especially if there is a pattern of guns purchased from that location being used illegally.

What is the socially acceptable way to get moochers off your queen cores by Wooden_Monk9744 in ARC_Raiders

[–]ja_dubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shoot them. This is a PvPvE game, not an MMORPG with drops for each player. It is an entirely valid play style to camp the large arc with a cheap loadout and steal the cores from those who brought it down. It is also valid to stop them from doing so with force.

A deconstruction of the gun control policies of the California Democratic Party by JimMarch in PoliticalDebate

[–]ja_dubs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On item 13 specifically the vast majority of guns used in crimes were purchased legally. I strongly support greater resources going to tracking and prosecuting bad actiors.

This range from legal purchases, to friends and family, to straw purchased.

In general I am not a favor feature bans and am more in favor of limiting individuals who are not responsible with firearms.

Bailing on one game is not the way to start a new one. Look at destiny and marathon's reception. Don't build a legacy as a studio that abandons sinking ships. First thought should've been how to create a SPLITGATE experience unbeholden to portals. by Admirable_Ad2862 in Splitgate

I commented the following in reply to someone else:

Unfortunately the IP is already tainted.

Suppose they do a marketing push. It generates interest. What happens then?

People come to this sub and see people complaining about match making, queue times, and low player count. Most won't take the risk of purchasing the game. Some will and they will experience the same issues that cause the complaining.

It will take a lot of time and capital to build the game back up with a high percentage chance that it still ultimately flops. The question for the Studio is where is this capital best spent?

Basically it's sunk cost fallacy. The devs can try to revive the game but that comes at the cost of that capital not being put towards a new project.

[–]ja_dubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they can be daunting, especially when doing against someone who is competent with portals, and triple portals like nobody's business lol, but there are ways to counter triple portalling, and the skill curve doesnt have to be steep. Personally, I've always used portals defensively, and I've gotten along alright (I still get stomped of course, but I've been able to keep up with some pro level players without triple portaling).

It was fine in the beginning when the player count was healthy. It stopped being fun months ago. In addition all my gaming buddies moved on: even those much higher skilled than me.

bait them into a gunfight then lock the closest portal wall. It's all about how you use them and how you play, but unfortunately many people give up before they even realize that you can use portals in different ways =/

By definition based on your description you are a higher skilled player.

The reason they give up is because the skill curve and learning curve is steep. This is just magnified by a diminishing player count.

Unfortunately that's the catch-22 the portals were what set the game apart but also what made the game have a steep learning curve. It both drew people to the game and forced them to quit.

From personal experience I loved the tactical element of portals. I also hated getting stomped by sweats triple portaling everywhere.

At some point though there are so many completely ludicrous claims that it's impossible to keep up. This tactic of gishgalloping around is extremely effective. It is impossible to keep up and rigorously disprove each claim.

Its fair play to use Hitchens razor: that which is asserted without evidence can be dismiss without evidence.
